Youth Rugby Squad Cleans Trail, Raises Funds
The Bermuda Youth Rugby U17 squad recently joined Tucker and Mike Murphy and the Parks Department in order to clear the Railway Trail on both sides of Store Hill, where the proposal is to bridge Store Hill in conjunction with FBRT.
A spokesperson said, “A full complement of players and coaches, totaling 26, showed up at 8.00am last Saturday [Jan 31] on a cold and blustery day and worked tirelessly for five hours in clearing debris from the hurricanes to further open the trail and remove cut trees on both sides of Store Hill.
“This now leaves only a few more trees to cut back in preparation of the site to repair the pylons and clear stumps from the trail.”
“Mike Murphy was pleased with the support from the Youth Rugby squad and the boys enjoyed a good workout with a lot of lifting and dragging, but more importantly the exercise reinforced a number of the key principles of rugby including commitment, discipline, work ethic and last but not least teamwork.”
“Patrick Calow, the Bermuda Rugby Football Union, Youth Development Officer, thanked Mike and Tucker Murphy for the opportunity to assist in this very worthwhile project and one that ultimately will benefit residents and visitors for many years to come.”
The U17 youth squad is heading to the UK at the end of March to commemorate their coach Devrae Noel Simmons, who passed away on January 8, 2014, and complete a tour he was in the process of finalizing prior to his passing.
The tour will include three matches against top quality club sides, including a Friday night game at Allianz Park, the home of Saracens Rugby, and a visit to Wembley for a Premiership Rugby match.
The squad has been training since September 2014 and last week’s activity was a fundraiser for the tour, with many of the squad being sponsored by family members and friends. To support the team, funds can be deposited to HSBC account 010-261626-002.

more, more, more! Fantastic and this is the news that Bermuda needs to see flooding the airwaves. Lets move away from politicians and their opinion pieces and cheer on groups like this!
Well done!
thank you thank you thank you.
it is mind blowing how dirty people are becoming and as a result it shows up in the Bermuda trees, walls, roadsides. yes i walk with gloves on to pick up trash that people leave right next to the trash receptacles.
stop being dirty people and teach your kids too.
Congratulations to each one of you. It is wonderful to see young people take an interest in the environment. Too bad we cannot get more people involved in cleaning up Paget, Warwick and Southampton Railway trail. These sections of the Trail are disgusting.
Great effort by all.
Great group of young men, I have no doubt they’ll do us all proud in the UK. Great to see a story of the positive young men in our community.
These guys are awesome! Well done!
While I am grateful for the Bermuda Youth Rugby under 17 team helping to clean up I truly believe that this is something that prisoners at Westgate should be doing on a DAILY basis anyway. They should not only have to clean up on land but they should also be given scuba gear to pick up trash underwater as well. Seems like those prisoners are getting a free ride. KBB shouldn’t even have to exist with all of those prisoners up there doing NOTHING ALL DAY! That’s how i feel!
You bai’s are awesome… Thank You!
Well done to the U17 Bermuda rugby squad and the organisers and coaches. Great endeavours all around! To work in conjunction with Mr Murphy Tucker who is a Bermuda Olympian and champion of the railroad trail and new bridges is amazing synergy! Fantastic job to all.
Well done lads. In the spirit of rugby and the community, a great and worthy effort.
Well Done Guys!!! Maybe others will learn from your example.
Well done guys! Your efforts are greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks for the hard work Gys. Keep it up. I am sure you all will do us proud in the UK and some of you next week in Las Vegas.
On behalf of Keep Bermuda Beautiful, well done to Patrick Calow, Mike Murphy and the Parks Department for organizing this fund-raiser and for the rugby players who did such a great job! The Friends of the Bermuda Railway Trail are making great improvements to our Trails and are a leading example of how a small group can make big improvements that benefit everyone. This was much needed help for the Parks Department who are still working on post-hurricane clean up. The appalling amount of litter that is carelessly or deliberately thrown down is an entirely different story, along with the problems that need to be worked out of supervising a prison labour force to help with litter clean ups. So for this wonderful news about the rugby players, kudos to all involved!
