Speaking on yesterday’s competition, BBA President Peter Dunne said, “Our team had a strong day today here in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Matthew Oliveira won the silver medal in the individual time trial for pre-junior [15-16 year old] boys.

“He was less than a second off of the top spot but is pleased with having made such a strong showing in his debut at this regional championships. Also in the pre-junior category Kaden Hopkins finished a strong 9th place while Daniel Oatley, a winner here three years ago, raced well to finish in 7th place, averaging over 25 miles per hour in the junior category.

“Our girls, Tristan Narraway and Cassy McPhee finished 6th and 7th, respectively, with both turning in performances with their personal best average speeds in a time trial.

“The action resumes today with a the road races on a 6.5 km circuit. The girls start at 8am and then the pre-juniors at 9:30 and the juniors about 11:15.

“It will be a hot and challenging event that has several technical turns in the city section and then a longer highway stretch exposed to the prevailing winds. Dylan Hill will join Oliveira and Hopkins, giving Bermuda a strong team who should be able to work together.”
