Jah-Nhai Perinchief Breaks Saunders Record

April 18, 2016

[Updated] Bermuda’s Jah-Nhai Perinchief had an outstanding performance at the K.T. Woodman Classic in Wichita, Kansas, winning the high jump and shattering the Bermuda Junior National Record, which was set by legendary athlete Clarence “Nicky” Saunders some 35 years ago.

Bermuda National Athletics Association President Donna Raynor said that Jah-Nhai Perinchief jumped a personal best of 2.26m, which is not only very close to the Olympic qualifying standard of 2.29, but also broke the Bermuda Junior National Record of 2.22m, set by Clarence “Nicky” Saunders in July 1981.

Breaking a record held by Mr Saunders is no small feat, considering his record-breaking leap at the 1990 Commonwealth Games has remained unbroken after 26 years, and Mr Saunders was a world class athlete who made three Olympic appearances, placing as high as 5th in the Olympic Games.

Perinchief is a very talented young athlete, having previously represented Bermuda at the Carifta Games and NACAC Senior Championships, won bronze at the 2014 CAC Junior Championships, placed eighth and served as flag-bearer at the Youth Olympics in China, and placed second in the high jump at the Holland National Championships.

Update 1.07pm: Shadow Sports Minister Michael Weeks said, “On behalf of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party, I offer congratulations to Jah-Nhai Perinchief on the tremendous achievement of breaking Clarence “Nicky” Saunders’ 35 year old Bermuda youth high jump record.

“I have followed Jah-Nhai’s career and he is certainly on the right path towards success. Jah-Nhai’s jump has him certainly in the ballpark for future Olympic participation and we encourage him to continue working hard to achieve his goals.

“He is no stranger to representing Bermuda in international competition, and we wait with great anticipation for what the future may hold.”
