City Hall Car Park Will Be Closed This Weekend

June 9, 2016

The City of Hamilton announced that the City Hall car park is closed to the public this weekend from 6am Saturday June 11th through to 6pm Sunday June 12th.

“This is a matter of safety as two trees are being removed from the centre and relocated to the two north corners of the car park. In addition some new trees will be planted on the Wesley Street sidewalk. This requires a major crane operation,” a spokesperson said.

The City of Hamilton’s Senior Engineer Ian Hind said the City has scheduled this to minimize disruption to motorists.

“Depending on how well the work proceeds, the car park may open Sunday afternoon however these mature trees and this is no small undertaking,” he said.

“This is a significant operation involving deep holes being dug, truckloads of soil being moved and it would not be practical to close off only part of the car park. It would be dangerous to allow motorists in and we therefore have no option but to close it completely.”

The City added, “The streets surrounding City hall car park, Victoria Street, Wesley Street and Dismont Drive all remain open to traffic as normal.

“The two False Ebony trees are being relocated as a part of the City Hall car park construction plan, to install a paid barrier system to protect City of Hamilton revenue.”

Does it matter if the project is on budget, on time and good quality? Be happy that there is capital improvement taking place and people are employed.

For a corporation that is looking for missing millions and is near on broke this is beyond ludicrous, the expense alone to move these 2 tees is not justifiable as is the untold waste of money for the fancy not needed sidewalks complete with fancy light posts and pave stones and dare we incorporate the labour time to complete this long term project. Money would have been better spent on filling the pot holes ( a total re pave ) and simply shut one entrance/exit and create a SINGLE entry and PAY TO EXIT site, and yet we still need to totally inconvenience the very people we want to attract into the city. I am sorry just don’t buy the waste

Anyone want to go chain themselves to the trees. Save our trees. Too late for the car park.
