Video: Tyrrell To Run For PLP In By-Election

November 24, 2016

[Updated] The PLP announced that Neville Tyrrell will be their candidate for the by-election in Constituency 26 Warwick South Central, which is set to take place on December 20th.

Mr Tyrrell will match up against Robyn Swan, who the OBA has already announced as their candidate.

This by-election is being called due to the retirement of Marc Bean, who stepped down as both Leader of the Opposition and as a Member of Parliament.

The last by-election in Constituency #26 was called in 2010 following the resignation of former Premier Dr Ewart Brown, and saw a three-way race with the PLP, UBP and BDA. Mr Bean won with 310 votes, United Bermuda Party candidate Devrae Noel-Simmons with 78 votes, while Sylvan Richards, then running under the Bermuda Democratic Alliance, got 70 votes.

In the 2012 General Election Marc Bean retained the C#26 seat with 65.08% of the vote vs Ras Mykkal [OBA]. The 2007 General Election saw Dr Ewart Brown [PLP] win 68.45% of the vote vs Roderick Simmons [UBP], while the 2003 General Election saw Dr Brown win with 65.99% of the vote vs Gwyneth Rawlins [UBP].

The press conference has just concluded, and we will update with additional information as able, and in the meantime the 12-minute live video replay is below.

    Best of Luck Neville,

Nice to see a strong solid citizen putting himself forward

    • Frequent Traveler says:

Neville tell the OBA no to the airport deal and have a faster system with more polite customs officers. Travel to any other country in the World and only in Bermuda do they treat people like a criminal with so many questions……….??????

      Where did you go?
      How many days off Bermuda?
      Who did you visit?
      Are you feeling well?
      Are you with anyone?
      Is that you’re bag?
      Do you have all receipts?
Why did the dog sit next to you?
Are you staying at this hotel?
      Did you pack this bag?

Tell them God is traveling with you, he packed the bags and he’s still with you with a smile!

When you fly into the other Caribbean islands such as Bahamas or Jamaica customs control is so much faster. To add more insult to injury they have 9 times the amount of passengers every day that Bermuda deals with.
We are so doomed when the AMERICA’S CUP visitors arrive with current processing procedure. Send the next Minister to the Caribbean to find out why they check in visitors so much faster. Building a new airport is a ban aide approach if you don’t cure the Cancer within. Next time they take you’re passport at desk time the officer. I do it every time I travel they must know who the slow ones are.

      • bluwater says:

Maybe just answer the questions quicker with a smile.

      • Jus' Wonderin' says:

Maybe you look suspect lmfao…jus sayin

      • Cynic says:

So you moan about a new airport, then complain about the existing one.

Oh, and if god packs your bags, you’re already lying to the check-in staff when you say you packed your own bag.

        And what is ban aide?

In fact, youre spellin is so baaad i got no eye dear wot your talkin abought

      • Build a Better Bermuda says:

You must not have travelled to many other countries then if you think Bermuda immigration is a grilling. Just try flying into the US from another destination that isn’t used to us flying in through there. In fact fly through some of the other destination countries in the Caribbean and see how their new airports aren’t leaking, or don’t have collapsed ceilings or sewage backing up in Passenger areas or have to worry about their passengers getting off the plane in torrential rain on slick metal stairs….

  2. Onion says:

Funny. Last election he was attacking the then opposition OBA for “tax cuts” and plans that weren’t paid for.

Now he’s joining the now opposition PLP which is promising tax cuts and budget busting plans.

    • M. T. Pockets says:

I think Neville has been a life long PLP supporter and member.

      • Onion says:

That’s fine. I just wish we had politicians who weren’t so stuck to their party that they will criticise something that others do and then support doing the same thing themselves.

The hypocrisy is ruining this country.

      • Zevon says:

        You totally missed the point.

    • JAWS says:

Funny last election the OBA was blaming the PLP now the OBA is in charge and they still blame the PLP. People get tired of the same old song. Change the music and by the way has anyone gone to jail for the missing 800 mill. Where is the Jet gate report?
The OBA removes Premier Cannonier after jet gate and brings him back 12 months later as a minister what type of integrity are we displaying to the young people. If he did nothing wrong why remove him or why did he step down?

“Now that is what the boys call – Classic bait and switch!”

      • Toodle-oo says:

I didn’t realize that the 1.5 Billion debt and its crippling effect that’s going to be affecting us for another 25 years at least had been taken care of .
Get used to the blame , it’s going to (rightfully) be with us for a very long time .

      • Pompano says:

I totally agree! almost 4 years as Government and still blaming the PLP…unbelievable! Do you think constant pointing fingers at the opposition will win you the next election? It wont! People are tired of it and the swing voters are very disappointed…especially me!

        • Triangle Drifter says:

And do you think that the finacial pile of scat that the PLP left the OBA to deal with has somehow magically disappeared just because our finances are now in competent hands?

        • Zevon says:

We are still in the sheet because the PLP put us there. Get used to hearing it for several decades, because that’s how long it will take to dig our way of the mess they got us into.

        • Cynic says:

THE MESS WE ARE IN IS BECAUSE OF THE PLP!!!!!!!! HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THAT?????? Of course they get the blame, it’s their fault!!! It will take a lot longer than 4 years to turn this ship around, but by god, they are doing a fantastic job of doing it. Voting them out at the next election will be the end of Bermuda.

      • bluwater says:

Jetgate report published in 2014. Try to keep up. You an look it up here on Bernews. http://bernews.com/2014/07/oba-release-findings-of-jetgate-investigation/

  3. M. T. Pockets says:

Neville is a good guy, I wish him good luck.

  4. Desk Warmer says:

    Standing Strong for AC2017!!

    Standing Strong for 2,000 jobs

    Standing Strong for OBA

    Standing Strong for Gibbons Co

    • Question says:

You’ve been standing since the ubp change the name to oba to sway black Bermudian voters to vote for them. I don’t understand why the name change it’s still the same people. When the UBP was in charge money and jobs were unlimited it’s the truth. So why change the name? United Bermuda Party even sounds richer then oba or plp.

      • Rumsoak says:

        Just politics

      • hmmm says:

OBA is a completely different party…A new constitution was created, giving opportunity to everyone and anyone who wanted to get involved. To say they are the same shows ignorance.

  5. Jus' Askin' says:

Do us All a favour and take on the message ;-)

  6. Truth Teller says:

Neville has a lot to offer Bermuda and constituents in Warwick. He is a good
man with a lot of integrity.

    A great pick.

  7. Justice says:

NevilleTyrrell? So ya saying she has a chance…..

  8. Zaob Yob says:

Mr. Tyrrell is a good decent man, but he is a political ghost of a bygone era. So why has he been resurrected, brushed off and put out to run again?

Clearly he is a compromise candidate who is apparently inoffensive to both the Burt camp, and those who oppose Burt in the Bean camp. But does that make him a good candidate in today’s climate and is he truly representative of the future of the PLP?

The odds of victory are in Tyrrell’s favor as it is a safe seat, but if the Ms Swan increases the OBA’s vote count, it will be blow to the new PLP leadership.

  9. Ringmaster says:

What happened to Jonathan Smith? Doesn’t the PLP want to show diversity? Seems it is back to the same old old boys club in The House, while pandering to the female vote in the Senate. The PLP should adopt Back to the Future as their slogan.

  10. Anthony says:

Mr. Tyrrell is an awesome father and family man he’s a good choice for the constituency thank you for selecting him and good luck in the by election.

  11. Takbir Karriem Sharrieff says:

P.L.P. Looking Good ,,,,Standing Strong……next Government For Bermuda……….Congratulations.Peace.!

  12. Realist says:

The OBA has done a tremendous job and Bermudians know it. It’s unfortunate that we are driven by racism when voting. The PLP are not positioned to build on the success of the OBA and the risk of putting them in as the Government is not wise. We need strong business men/women to head up Bermuda. We need to let the OBA continue with the huge economy building initiatives. Vote for a continuing thriving Bermuda.
