Department To Host Safer Internet Day 2019
This Tuesday [Feb 19], the Department of ICT Policy & Innovation will host Safer Internet Day from 10am until 2:30pm at St. Paul’s Centennial Hall in Hamilton.
A spokesperson said, “This Tuesday, February 19th, the Island’s seniors will gather to learn, surf, post, secure, like, and comment during Bermuda’s 5th annual Safer Internet Day. This event is hosted by the Department of ICT Policy & Innovation, from 10 am until 2:30 pm at St. Paul’s Centennial Hall, 59 Victoria Street, Hamilton.
“This is a free event and sponsors include BF&M, Barritt’s and the Department of ICT Policy & Innovation.
“This year’s event will focus on the 4Rs: Respect, Responsibility, Reasoning and Resilience. Attendees will learn about the many ways to use the Internet in a secure way, to adopt safe social media practices, and to appreciate the many benefits of eReaders and other technology tools.
“Most importantly, they will receive information about the real dangers that are lurking online. One fraudulent practice, which is increasingly affecting our seniors, is lottery scams. A lottery scam is a type of advance-fee fraud which begins with an unexpected email notification, phone call, or mailing [sometimes including a large check] claiming that ‘You have won!’a large sum of money in a lottery.
“Seniors will be given tips on what to look for and how to protect themselves from this common form of cyber-attack. They will also receive information about the importance and availability of a plethora of personal security devices that can help them feel safe on- and off-line.
“Safer Internet Day is a combination of presentations and expo. Participating seniors will be able to talk with representatives from the Bermuda Police Service, BF&M, the Bermuda National Library, the Office of Ageing and Disability Services, Energize Wellness, and the Department of ICT Policy and Innovation’s Cybertips Programme.
“The day will wrap up with the initiative which was launched last year, the “Seniors Teaching Seniors” programme. During this time, high school seniors will provide one-on-one tutorial sessions to attendees, helping them navigate their personal mobile devices and sharing tips and tricks on how to make the most out of them. The “Seniors Teaching Seniors” programme is a highlight of the event and proves to be a beneficial experience for both the seniors and students.
“Safer Internet Day encourages the Island’s seniors to be comfortable in today’s digital world while practicing cybersafety in their interactions. This makes them part of a global movement that encourages healthy online habits.
“As the Internet has become an integral tool in every-day life on the Island, and all users require this knowledge in order to safely steer clear of its dangers such as financial fraud and identity theft and to become and remain good digital citizens. This is of paramount importance since we increasingly spend more and more time online.
“Bermuda can say with certainty that its tech-savvy seniors have embraced the Internet with all of its positive aspects and have learned that cybersecurity is not limited to the business community.

many of them will just forget whats learnt due to problems most of them face during aging. better solution is needed.
my suggestion is to create some kinda of hot-line using voice-over-IP and/or Team Viewer application. and have the senior students staff it as apart of the already existing community service point system.
