Column: In Celebration Of Principals & Teachers

Someone once said that, “…it is during adversity that one finds creativity…” As we enter another week of school buildings being closed, let us take the time to celebrate the non-essential front line workers who have been teaching school at home. In essence, school is open and continues to be – from lessons being conducted at kitchen countertops, dining room tables, spare rooms, downstairs dens, outside in the yard and via work packets – educators throughout the island, on a daily basis, continue to provide meaningful lessons to our young people.

Many of these lessons do not just span the academic realm, but they also tap into real-life skills that will assist our young people in being resilient during this particular time in history and beyond. Educators have had to be inventive, re-inventive, and creative in communicating with their stakeholders, their lesson delivery, and the assessing of learning.

Agreeably, it is not a one size fits all approach; for, as students’ faces differ so do their needs; and, professionally, we have encountered speed bumps and obstacles along the way. However, none of this has stopped school leaders and classroom practitioners from re-adjusting their mindsets, re-learning practices and refining their operations with new ideas in an effort to better suit the needs of our students and parents; for, after all, we are service providers. Schools continue to provide food to the hungry, emotional support to those needing assistance and additional resources to those who simply articulate, “…I have a need…”

As we continue along this journey, of schooling at home, we celebrate the island’s school leaders – Happy Principal Appreciation Day; and, we celebrate the faculty at each school – Happy Teacher Appreciation Week. We appreciate all that you do!
