Overtime Dispute: Parks Workers Walk Off Job

March 25, 2010

Over 100 Bermuda Department of Parks employees walked off the job this morning [Mar 25], and are presently in meetings.

Bernews understands the walkout to be over a two main issues; being asked to work overtime for time in lieu instead of pay, and an exchange of words between a park worker[s] and Environment Minister Glenn Blakeney. We understand the exchange of words may have been the catalyst for the walkout, with discontent already simmering due to the overtime pay ban.

The workers are said to be particularly concerned about being requested to work overtime at this years Agricultural exhibition, and being given time in lieu instead of overtime pay. The “Ag Show” is scheduled for April 15 -17 this year.

They are currently meeting with union reps at the Botanical Gardens, and are expected to continue to strike tomorrow.
