Sun March 21: Southlands Open to the Public
On Sunday March 21st, from 2pm until 5pm, the much discussed Southlands Estate in Warwick will be open to the public.
The Bermuda Environmental and Sustainability Taskforce [BEST] have obtained permission from the Southlands owners to invite the public to visit the site for an afternoon.
Tour guides will be on hand to show and comment on the notable features of the property.
There will be BEST information tables and posters, ample parking on the field to the south of South Road and refreshments available.
Frequently in the news due to the controversial development plans, the Southlands property dates back to the 18th century and is said to contain many unusual features.
In 2005 Bermudian businessmen Craig Christensen, Nelson Hunt and Brian Duperreault bought the estate from the Willowbank Foundation and planned to develop a tourist resort, which was met with resistance from segments of the public.
In an exchange which has yet to come to fruition, the three owners agreed with the Bermuda Government to swap Southlands for 80 acres at Morgan’s Point so that Southlands could be preserved in its natural state.
