USA: Bermudian Wins Deaf Communication Contest
Young Bermudian, Shakori Trott, a student at St. Joseph’s Institute for the Deaf, beat out a number of other entrants to win the East Missouri District Optimist Communications Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in May 2010. His winning entry was based on a theme of “Cyber Communication: Progress or Problem?”, and he was awarded a $2,500 scholarship for the honor.
St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf, located in Missouri, serves children with hearing loss, preschool through eighth grade, with an auditory-oral education that includes academics, an intensive language curriculum and individualized speech therapy.
“Through his speech, Trott did a wonderful job of presenting his thoughts about the questions posed to him,” District Chairman Karl Tyminski said. “The members of our Optimist District have no doubt that Shakori Trott has a bright future ahead of him.”

Kudos to this young man – a fantastic achievement indeed, and he should be proud of his accomplishments! To the writer of the article, do you think it is a bit misleading to write “Bermudian school student Shakori Trott, a student at St. Joseph’s Institute for the Deaf…”? Perhaps the following would have been closer to the truth: “Young Bermudian, Shakori Trott, a student at St. Joseph’s Institute for the Deaf…”. Small detail to be fair, but he isn’t a student in Bermuda!
Excellent pickup, thank you very much! We amended it…
