Photos & Video: Destination Dockyard

June 15, 2010

Destination Dockyard is held each Monday during the summer months, and features food vendors, artisans, Swizzle King Contest, the ever popular gombeys and a stage performance which included a man riding a unicycle with a lady on top of his shoulders. The initiative is supported by the West End Development Corporation [WEDCO], Chamber of Commerce, Department of Tourism, the Cruise lines and local vendors, and last night [June 14] was extremely well attended by visitors and locals alike. Delights on offer included Jamaican Grill food, airbrushed tattoos, fun castles, hair braiding, the locally themed jewellery designs of Alexandra Mosher, Bermuda paintings and more.

Well known local personality Ed Christopher served as the Master of Ceremonies, with performances including The Warwick Gombeys, a magician and Michael James. Mr. James, a veteran performer from the Cruise Lines who has previously worked for the famed Ringling Brothers Circus, wowed the crowd and terrified his plucked-from-the-crowd-volunteer Ms Cici Pitt by riding a unicyle with her balanced on his shoulders. He began his performance jump roping while on the unicycle, and ended up with free climbing an 8-foot ladder and juggling knives. The Warwick Gombeys, who are set to leave the island soon to perform in Boston, were a huge crowd favourite, and late in their performance invited tourists to dance along with them.
