Bermuda: 1st World Championship Lacrosse Win
Bermuda has claimed our first ever lacrosse victory at World Championship level, when the National Squad beat Denmark 11-8 yesterday [July 18] in Manchester, UK. Bermuda’s national team showed themselves to be ‘giant slayers’, as our approximate population of 65,000 pales in comparison to Denmark’s 5.5 million strong population.
Our national side never conceded the lead and dominated through the whole game as they jumped to a 5-0 lead in the beginning of the match courtesy of two goals from Stephen Michel and additional goals from Dominic Gallina, Andy Soucie and Rick Fields.
Denmark returned with three goals, however Bermuda was not to be denied with Kyle Tucker, Stephen Michel and Dominic Gallina all answering back with a goal each. Mr Gallina and and Doug Bell each added in another goal for Bermuda, giving Bermuda the history making 11-8 victory.
Bermuda had previously played both Poland and Finland in this tournament, and been bested by both teams. They take on Poland today, with what we can only assume must be a new surge of confidence following their unprecedented win at World Championship level.
The World Lacrosse Championships has made headlines, as the Iroquois national team, which comprimises players of Iroquois Native American descent, was barred from entry to the UK due to the British Government refusing to allow them in on their Iroquois passports. The lacrosse tournament is one of the few times the sovereignty of the Iroquois is recognized, and the players have held firm refusing to get Canadian or American passports [for which they are eligible] stating they will only travel and play under what they consider their national side – Iroquois.
