The Department of Health is encouraging parents and guardians of children entering Government Primary One classrooms this September, to bring their children in for speech and language assessments. Parents and guardians have already been advised by letter of the assessments that will take place during the week of July 12-16 at three centres across the Island. The Department of Health will conduct the free speech and language screenings for new P1 students enrolled in Bermuda Government Schools. Parents and guardians must first make an appointment by calling Susan Price Barrett at 287-6429 and appointments will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

A spokesman reminded parents that, it is important to make sure that their child’s communication readiness skills are developing at the appropriate level for success in classroom activities, social interaction, literacy and learning. Parents or guardians will be required to accompany their child to the brief 30-minute screening session and a therapist will be on hand to discuss any concerns.

“These screenings may detect weaknesses in areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, thinking and or learning, the spokesman added. “Early detection of such weaknesses allows for early intervention, possibly reducing or preventing a negative impact on the child’s classroom success.”

Parents and guardians are encouraged to make their appointment as soon as possible.
