Marine & Ports: Remove Unregistered Moorings

July 2, 2010

319078_sailing_2The Boats and Moorings Section of the Department of Marine and Ports announced an initiative aimed at clearing unregistered and illegal moorings from around Bermuda.

The Moorings initiative kicks off on Monday, July 5 and staff from Marine and Ports will be checking all moorings around the island. Moorings should display a current registration decal for 2010. The Department says that any buoy without a decal will be removed- registered or not – as the Department has no way of knowing if it is correctly registered if it is not showing a decal.

They also remind boat owners that their boats should display a current registration decal on the starboard side bow as well as the registration numbers on the port and starboard bow.

The Director of Marine and Ports, Francis Richardson said: “There has been a large increase in the number of boats in Bermuda in the past few years and as sheltered bays suitable for moorings become more congested we must act to ensure all moorings are legitimate, licensed and in the correct location”

In 2009 and early 2010 the Boats and Moorings Section, in cooperation with Marine Police, the Ministry of Works and Engineering, Parks Department, Department of Environmental Protection and private business undertook clean ups of bays around Bermuda removing many abandoned and derelict boats and punts.

During the clean ups at locations from St. George’s to Sandys approximately 30 derelict and abandoned boats were removed and disposed of according to environmental regulations. In addition all punts without proper license decals and numbers were issued compliance notices which resulted in many owners properly registering their punts, some for the first time in many years.

It would be good if the adhesive on the moorings decals was a better quality!!
Our decals are already peely and badly faded.
They fade too quickly, come off too easily, then you have to pay $5 for a replacement!
