Two Shootings Tonight: One Murder

[Updated] Bernews understands there was a shooting on Court Street approximately one hour ago. It appears that one person was shot, and has been rushed to King Edward Memorial Hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time, however we will update with further information as it becomes available through the night.

Update 2:15am: The Court Street shooting was the second for the night, with the first one coming in Devonshire, in the region of the boat club. The hospital has a police presence.

Update 2:48: We can now confirm the death of the victim who was shot on Court Street. The victim, who is very well known in the community, is a 47-year-old man who was well known to frequent the area. He has been targeted before. The Police and forensic units are on the scene:

Update 3:00am: The Devonshire shooting occurred in the area of the Mid Atlantic Boat Club on North Shore just past Dock Hill. Police can be seen examining the grounds of the premises, and there are forensic officers on the scene, as shown below. Police confirm one man shot and injured, and we unofficially understand the victim to be a young man.

Update 3:48am: We are on the scene of the Court Street murder now, waiting to speak with Assistant Commissioner of Police David Mirfield, who is on scene. Police tape stretches from Spinning Wheel entry doors, extending about 20 feet each side. There are approximately 20 people outside Swinging Doors, with one person showing great emotion a while ago.

Update 3:53am: We just spoke with Assistant Commissioner of Police David Mirfield, who said that about 12:20am this morning [Aug 9] Police received a 911 call reporting a shooting in the Spinning Wheel nightclub on Court Street. Police responded and established a man had been shot inside the club, receiving multiple gunshot wounds, and was taken to hospital where just after 1am where he was prounced dead. Mr Mirfield said the Police are aware that his identity is already becoming widely known in the community, but said they will not be releasing it as of yet except to say he was a 47-year-old man, in order to assure all family is notified. We inquired if the Police would confirm if he was targeted, and if it was gang related, Mr Mirfield responded yes to both. He also said the club was busy, and witnesses are coming forward but it is too early to say how valuable the information will be. The Police are conducting forensic investigations, and also studying CCTV footage as the area is covered by cameras.

Update 5:20am: Police still on both scenes, with a considerably larger presence at the Court Street murder scene. The crowds outside Swinging Doors has dissipated, however about ten people remain.

Around 12:30am on Monday, Police responded to a confirmed firearm incident at The Spinning Wheel nightclub on Court Street in Pembroke. The victim, a 47 year old Pembroke man, was shot multiple times inside the club. He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

No further information will be given until next of kin have been notified. The Bermuda Police Service extends condolences to the family & friends of the deceased. There were people in The Spinning Wheel nightclub at the time of the incident and some of those individuals have come forward to assist officers with their inquiries.

Investigators are also analyzing CCTV footage of the area. The scene has been cordoned off and is being forensically examined for evidence. An active investigation into this matter is underway. A 21 year old Pembroke man was injured and attended King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment. The scene has been cordoned off and is being forensically examined for evidence.

Update 6:59am: Police still maintaining presence outside Spinning Wheel. We have obtained eyewitness version of events, see here.

Update 8:30am: Police still maintaining presences at both shooting scenes. Spinning Wheel’s entry is still cordoned off by crime scene tape. Our photo here shows what appears to be a CCTV camera on the pole above the door of the club on Court Street.

Update 10:39am: There will be a Police press conference this afternoon, and we will bring you that information at approximately 2pm.

    Bermuda Bermuda Bermuda!…….Like I said before, the Police need help….but the overtime cash is more important!…..the streets aren’t safe anymore!…anywhere!….anytime!…..If America can track terrorist, why is Bermuda Police finding it so hard to keep tabs on gunmen???….they know who is who and who is involved….????….somebody help me understand here???
