Victim Silent: Armed Robbery Charges Dropped

September 4, 2010

Yesterday [Sept 3] armed robbery charges against three men were dropped as the alleged victim declined to assist in the prosecution.

The incident occurred on July 1, 2010 with three men gaining entry to a home on Wellington Point Lane in St George’s at midday. The assailants demanded money, as the Police termed it, “brandished what appeared to be a firearm”.

Two days after the incident the Bermuda Police attended the Cup Match trials cricket game at Wellington Oval in St George’s, walking on to the field and arresting 24-year-old Detroy Smith during the game.

Mr Smith along with 18-year-old Wesley Stovell were charged on July 6th with a number of counts and were remanded in custody until the charges were dropped yesterday and they walked free.

A third defendant, 20-year-old Umdae Woolridge also had the charges against him dropped, however was remanded on another matter.

Charge the victim with obstruction of justice then. people have to learn to stop wasting the police and court’s time.

Well are the police and courts willing to ensure his safety for the rest of his life?

@ Aaron if the person chooses to drop the charges than it is thier choice..that’s why they are given that option…if they don’t want to go through with it then it’s their business. geeeesh..this morning I wanted eggs for breakfast than changed my mind and had pancakes.,,.who you gonna call..the breakfast police? give me a break! It’s their choice….

uncle ruckus: fair enough. i understand that perspective. believe me- i’ve contemplated a situation like this many times. but i guarantee the victim isn’t safe now either in the longterm. in fact, NONE of us are when we allow lawlessness to prevail. if everybody stood up for what was right then we could turn the tide on these thugs. no doubt- i’m well aware of the dangers this person would face. it’s no joke and not to be dismissed. but if you let people like that get away with it then they will be free to rob and possibly kill someone else in the future. what if nobody ever pressed charges because they were scared? the criminals would become even more brazen and things would be even worse. we’re heading that way now because there are no consequences and the criminals are controlling us all with violence and or the threat of violence.

roz: your statement is hilarious simply because it makes no logical sense. yes changing your mind on what you want to eat for breakfast is your perogative. the situation you proposed is ridiculous. are you seriously comparing the two? so you don’t see how letting a violent and armed criminal get away with their crime without any consequences is a bad thing? wow. i think half the problem on the island is people who have such an indifference to serious crimes and the lawlessness that surrounds us. god help us all.

@ Aaron its his choice..it’s not the people’s choice. He has decided that he wants no further action taken than that’s on him..Again I say if someone’s opinion or thought is not the same as yours than people have a problem with that..I really am not understanding that..everytime I see a comment posted people seem to have a problem with what others think and feel ..like WTH!! and my apologies if we are not on the same wavelength and you feel my comment makes no logical sense..that’s your opinion so I’ll respect it as you have a right to think and say how you feel..I might not agree with you but I am not going to disrepect you…He doesn’t want it to go any further so get over it!!! you might not like it but it’s his right..Peace and Love!.
