Today: Round The Island Boat Race

134 powerboatingAfter three previous cancellations due to tropical storm warnings, the weather has finally cooperated and the 2010 Round the Island Powerboat Race will be held today [Sept 12] .The boats leave from Ferry Reach, with the powerboats heading out at 1:55pm, with the junior racing taking place at 11 am and jet ski racing at 12 noon.

The popular annual event will encompass the following areas; Ferry Reach, North Shore, Two Rock Passage, Hamilton Harbour, Granaway Deep, Port Royal Bay, Great Sound, Commissioner’s Point, Fort St. Catherine’s Point and St. David’s.

The boats will be visible all around the island, and spots around the island that offer good vantage points include Pontoons Park in Spanish Point and the shoreline area by the Bailey Bay Cricket Club. The boats are expected to hit speeds of upwards of 70mph during the race.

A Department of Marine and Ports statement said “In the interest of public safety Marine Police and Race Marshalls will be patrolling all areas. During the race mariners are strongly encouraged to use caution when navigating in these areas.”
