Bermuda Hockey Federation Weekend Roundups

Match reports from the Bermuda Hockey Federation matches held on October 8, 9 and 10th are below:

Women’s B League: Ravens B vs Swallows B – Final score: 1-0

In a hard fought contest where both teams played very well the Ravens defeated the Swallows 1-0. Ravens had several attempts on goal with Tracey Stewart narrowly missing the several times throughout the match. Ravens continued to put on the pressure on and were successful in converting a field goal in the 23rd minute. It was a great goal that was finalized by Kristina Viera. The Swallows goalkeeper Gemma Rowe made several great saves which ensured that Ravens did not find the back of the net again.

Swallows were not able to score, thanks to the strong defense of the Ravens, including junior Cara Johnston who Ravens named as the player of the match.

Women’s B League: Swifts B vs Cardinals B – Final score: 3-1

The game between the young Swifts team and the Cardinals was evenly matched as each team had several attempts to score, but it was Swifts who opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Ryanne Bardgett took the ball into the circle and slipped it passed the keeper. Bardgett doubled the lead in the 16th minute from inside a crowded circle with a reverse stick shot. The Cardinals teams continued with great persistence and were rewarded for their efforts with a penalty corner. On the penalty corner the ball was laid off to newcomer, Sarah Terry on a pass by Candy Foggo who had dribbled the ball into the circle. Terry’s shot deflected off the keeper’s pads and was slotted in by Denise Downey 24th minute. Both teams continued to press hard for the rest of the first half which ended 2-1 for Swifts.

The second half started with both team continuing to apply the pressure, and but even with the Cardinals perseverance they were unable to find the back of the net. Ten minutes before the end, Cardinals began to tire and even with Swifts many shots on goal and Bardgett’s breakaways were all brilliantly saved by the Cardinals’ keeper Holly Augustus who had an outstanding game. Unlucky for Cardinals in the 64th minute, Raven Pearman but the game away on a great shot from the top of the circle through a crowd of players to seal the win for Swifts.

Women’s B League: Bluebirds vs Longtail Canaries: Final score: 5-0

In other action the Bluebirds defeated the Longtail Canaries 5-0. Kourtney Fassler scored field goals in the 3rd and 18th minute to make it 2-0 to the Bluebirds at the end of the first half. Field goals Laura Bardgett in the 45th minute, Sarah Smith in the 47th minute and Deborah Sagurs in the 49th minute sealed the win for Bluebirds.

Women’s A League: Budgies A vs Canaries A – Final score: 1-1

The Budgies field hockey team started this game off short handed with only 9 players. Also playing with two volunteer goalies, Anna Terceira in the first half, and Verde Pineda in the second. The Budgies fought hard in the first half, attacking where they could and gaining attacking short corners against the Canaries. However, the Budgies defense quickly felt pressure from the Canaries attack and had difficulty always marking. A well executed pass from Jo-Ann Smith-Barrow in midfield, to Kirstie Jones on the wing, that was laid off to a determined Raina Steer inside the D to finish with a strong shot into the corner of the goal in the 17th minute.

In the second half, the Budgies were determined to fight back and score. The Budgies were using good passing techniques moving the ball around the Canaries. The Canaries still attacked and put pressure on the Budgies but their defense was determined not to let anymore goals in. In the 49th minute Stephanie Adderley tied the score 1-1 as a result of a short corner shot by Keishae Robinson. Canaries were very delighted to include R. Gibbons and J. Richardson from their junior side of Longtail Canaries in their squad.

Men’s League: Chameleons vs Rebels – Final score: 4-1

Chameleons put in another solid display to win 4-1 against the Rebels. Penalty corners were awarded in the first half and goals were converted by Richard Cox in the 18th and 33rd minute. In the 37th minute of the second half it was Robin Smallman who scored with a well finished reverse stick screamer. Paul Deans then made it 4-0 in the 64th minute after some fantastic interplay. With the last touch of the game Rebels scored a consolation goal of the stick of Martin McHugh in the 69th minute.

Men’s League: Police Polecats vs Chameleons – Final score: 2-3

In a hard fought and even matched contest the Panthers defeated the Police Polecats 3-2. The Panthers opened the scoring in the 24th on a field goal by Phil Philpott who deflected the ball into the goal on the near post from a cross by Chris Chapman. The Panthers doubled their lead one minute later through another deflection into the goal by Philpott. The Police fought right back and got onto the score sheet in the 29th minute on a breakaway goal by Lee Uddin who slotted the ball into the net from a great pass by Nigel Deane. The Police tied the game up in the 33rd minute off the stick of Deane who made a surging run down the right side of the pitch and dribbled passed the outstretch Panther’s Keeper.

In the second half the Police came out strong and almost took the lead in the 37th minute of play through a great shot by newcomer Andrew Brouwer whose shot was saved by the Panther’s keeper Matt Grace. Both teams exchanged opportunities throughout the second half but it was Panthers who were able to get the game winner off the stick of Jeremy Shrubb who slotted the ball in on a breakaway play on a pass from Tony Ward.
