Business Bermuda Launches Luncheon Seminars

October 20, 2010

Business Bermuda launched its first of six Luncheon Seminars today [Oct 20]. Rajah Abusrewil, Trust and Estates Attorney at Trott & Duncan, provided attendees with an overview of what individuals need to know when they address the vital subject of Estate Planning. She covered essential and wide-ranging areas such as writing a will, choosing appropriate executors and/or guardians of underage children – right down to deciding on burial or cremation. The goal of Ms. Abrusrewil’s talk was to guide attendees through the necessary steps to achieve peace of mind and control over their estate.

Some of the interesting tips that came up were:

  • If you are witness to another person’s will, you lose any benefit you may have in the will
  • Wills must be witnessed by two people, but do not need to be notarized in Bermuda
  • If you own two properties, you should indicate in your will which is your primary family homestead
  • If your property is in trust, technically you do not own it, so you cannot include it in your will
  • It is just as important to indicate your wishes in terms of who you do not wish to benefit under your will

Two attendees, Punam Jolly Romeo and Lorraine Darrell won the event’s doorprize, a personal consultation with Ms. Abrusrewil to address their own, individual estate planning needs.

This event was the first of six planned by the Local Awareness Committee of Business Bermuda. Chair of the Committee, Cynthia Wright, commented on the upcoming events, “We are looking forward to continuing on with the next five luncheon seminars. Based on the success of this event, I urge the public to visit the Business Bermuda web site to view the topics and make their registrations early. We have planned this complimentary, luncheon seminar series to appeal to a wide cross-section of the community. We are confident that the wide series of topics will be attractive to many.”
