Commonwealth Games Update: Two Advance

Two of Bermuda’s top athletes have advanced to the next round in the Commonwealth Games which are now underway in India. Bermuda’s top long jumper Tyrone Smith is through to the finals, and swimmer Roy Allan Burch has advanced to the semi final round.

Tyrone Smith finished fifth in the Qualification Group A with a leap of 7.49m. His best leap came on his 1st attempt that saw him in 2nd place after the first round, however he had a foul on his second attempt, before leaping 7.37m on his third and final attempt. Mr. Smith has previously competed at the World Indoor Championships, and also represented Bermuda at the 2008 Olympic Games. His personal best is 8.22 metres, which is the Bermuda National Record, which he set during his Gold Medal winning performance at the 2010 CAC Games.

Swimmer Roy Allan Burch has reached the men’s 50m Freestyle Semi-Finals after finishing fifth in Heat 7 with a time of 23.35. Mr Burch competed in Lane 2 finished 16th overall, while Nick Thomson swimming in Lane 8 of Heat 7 finished 6th in a time 24.22 and 23rd overall.
