A Hundred Women Who Made A Difference

Bermudians are being asked to help select the top hundred female trailblazers who contributed most to shaping our island over the last century as International Women’s Day marks its centenary.

Held on March 8, International Women’s Day is a global celebraton of the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.

International Women’s Day honours the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women’s success — and also serves as a reminder of inequities still to be redressed.

2011 is the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day and the Ministry of Youth, Families, Sports and Community Development and the Department of Human Affairs is taking the lead along with the Centre Against Abuse, the Women’s Resource Centre and the newly formed Bermuda Women’s Council in organising events for the month of March.

The theme for this year is “Strong Women Create Strong Communities.” Numerous events will take place during the month of March including a Proclamation Ceremony on March 8, which will recognise and celebrate women’s achievements.

The “100 Women 100 Vision” project is also a key part of the celebrations and seeks to highlight the leadership and accomplishments of women in Bermuda during the past 100 years whose activities have furthered the opportunities for women, and opened doors to build a broader and more inclusive community.

Organisers say this project has several objectives:

• To recognise and honour the 100 women at the Proclamation Ceremony on March 8 with a mini display at the Bermuda National Gallery. Further locations for the public display will be announced as they become available.
• To compile a commemorative hard bound book to be completed by year end with photos and biographies of the women honoured.
• To use the information as an educational tool to highlight some of the accomplishments of women in Bermuda by posting on the Bermuda Women’s Council website.
• To submit the 100 Women selected in Bermuda to the International body for consideration as an International Awardees’. These nominees are selected by the International Women’s Network Outstanding Service Award Committee.

If selected, award recipients will receive:

• Global recognition for outstanding service.
• Placement of picture and description of service on the International Women’s Day website for one year.
• Placement of picture and description of service on The Women’s Information Network website for one year.
• Recognition at the International Women’s Day event. Membership in the Women’s Information Network WINNER’S CIRCLE for one full year.
• International Women’s Day Outstanding Service Award Certificate.

Additional activities have been planned throughout the month of March and the calendar will be published at a later date by the Department of Human Affairs.
