Confessed Killer to Be Sentenced on Monday

January 28, 2011

Jermaine PearmanThe sentencing of confessed murderer Jermaine Pearman, who admitted killing his former girlfriend Shakeya DeRoza, has been carried over to Monday.

Mr Pearman had initially come into court at 10:30am today [Jan 28] for sentencing, which was pushed back to 2:30pm. During the afternoon hearing, the prosecution – by request of the family – asked that the victim impact statement not be read into court, and instead be read privately by the judge, to which he agreed.

Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Carrington Mahoney spoke for the prosecution, calling the murder “sadistic”.   Mr Pearman’s defence lawyer, John Perry QC, at point intimated that the knife wound to Mr Pearman’s neck he had when orginally arrested was not self inflicted. Mr Perry claimed that Mr Pearman said he was “truely sorry.”

Further legal discussions took place pertaining to the specific definition of the law as it pertains to a conviction of murder.

Earlier this week Mr Pearman, 37, pleaded guilty to killing 23-year-old Sandys resident Shakeya DeRoza but denied a charge of premeditation. Mr Pearman attacked Ms DeRoza at her Paynter Lane home on July 10, 2009, using a knife to slash her throat and inflict wounds to her heart.

Ms DeRoza, who worked as a Corrections Officer, staggered out of the house following the brutal attack, but collapsed and died on Middle Road after trying to reach neighbourhood shops for help. Her two children are in the care of her family.

Police arrested Mr Pearman later that same afternoon following a stand-off on the Railway Trail in Somerset. When he was eventually taken into custody, he had a self-inflicted wound to his neck and was alleged to be in possession of a knife.

Mr Pearman has a criminal history dating back over 15 years.
