Input Invited: Taxi Authority Review Committee

March 18, 2011

The Chairman of the Taxi Authority Review Committee would like to invite members of the public who would like to make a submission to the Committee to attend a meeting on Tuesday [Mar. 22] in the TCD Boardroom.

The meeting is due to start at 9:30am, with 15 minutes set aside for each verbal submission. The Committee will meet with individuals or groups up to a maximum of 3 persons per each 15 minute slot. Those making submissions should also come with their ideas already written out for the Committee to peruse with them on the day.

As announced on February 10, 2011, Minister of Transport Terry Lister formed the Taxi Review Authority to determine if the island needs a Taxi Authority. The Committee’s mandate is to consider the scope of the Taxi Authority, review the benefits of establishing the Authority, and determine how the Authority would function differently from the current Board.

Mr. Neville Tyrrell was appointed Chairman of the Committee and other members include MP Lovitta Foggo – who is the Chair of the Public Service Vehicles Licensing Board, Mr. Clyde Darrell, General Manager, Grotto Bay Hotel, and taxi owners Mr. Owen Darrell, and Mr. Irving Butterfield. Technical support is being provided by the Department of Transport.

A spokesperson said, “These meetings are intended to be fact finding meetings giving stakeholders a chance to provide input to assist the Committee in preparing their recommendations in a report to the Minister by the end of April 2011.”

“All persons are asked to come out to share their views on several main issues; if there is a need for a Taxi Authority and if they believe this could work for Bermuda’s taxi system and how they see such a Taxi Authority functioning among other recommendations.”
