Tool Thief Gets Three Years in Prison
40-year-old Andrew Arorash, said to be of no fixed abode, appeared in Magistrates Court yesterday [Mar.21] charged with stealing $1,900 worth of tools from DeCosta Construction Co Ltd and, having entered a guilty plea, was sentenced by Magistrate Archie Warner to three years in prison.
The Prosecutor told the Magistrate that the tools had been locked away after work had finished on 17th March; had been discovered missing on the morning of 18th March; that CCTV cameras had shown that Mr Arorash was the likely person; that Arorash was accosted on 19th March and admitted the burglary and theft on 20th March. Mr Arorash said that the tools, valued at $1,900 had been sold for $50.
Before passing sentence, replying to the Magistrate’s question: “Do you have anything to say?”; Mr Arorash told the Magistrate: “I’m sorry. I just graduated from Drug Court. I’m in Transition and I’ve got my GED.”
Mr Arorash went on to say that he had spent three weeks in Transition and had “just fell off.” He went on: “You can’t do it alone. You need help. I wasn’t ready to go out on my own.”
Replying, the Magistrate said that the drug program was “not designed as a babysitting program. If you refuse to grasp concepts and take the opportunity offered, you will return to old habits.”
Referring to some Mr Arorash’s prior convictions, the Prosecutor told the Magistrate that in 2007, Mr Arorash had been convicted and sentenced to two years in prison; that he had other offences resulting in convictions in 2005, 2004, and 2001. All these offences involved the theft of electrical tools.

30 lashes Front Street Flag Pole Friday @ 5pm…NEXT!
I’m down for that. No one would ever commit a crime if that was the punishment.
Thats kind of harsh for a nonviolent crime. How about putting the stocks to good use again? Who wants the concession for rotten fruit to throw?
Thats not harsh, in some cultures when you are convicted of stealing they might just chop off a finger for a first offence. 2nd or 3rd time you might just lose a whole hand. So no 30 lashes on Front Street is not harsh.
You never know who might enjoy the fetish of soft rotten fruits being thrown at them. You’d be better off giving then community service cleaning out shyt pitts instead…
He is drug addict and while you would hope that with asistance he wouldn’t return to a life of crime, it clearly isn’t the easiest thing to beat / control.
In short, spare us the insensitive drivel…
Oh I’m sorry if I offended you there Tony. It’s all the drugs fault. You’re right. They just jumped at him and got him hooked. Everyone is taught at a young age about the effects of drugs. You know you’re doing bad. I’ll tell you like I see it. It’s not my problem that you did drugs and now you can’t get off of them. It’s not my fault that you refuse to take any ownership for your actions and blame it on everything else. Don’t expect me to be sorry for you when you made your stupid mistakes in life. You always had the chance to walk away right from the start. Bring on the lashings.
Aright! Now tell us how you REALLY feel.
Lots of people feel the same way. We are tired of all the boo-hoo stories. We are tired of all the lame excuses.
May God bless this man in this HUGE fight. But, rules are rules and there are consequences. So many make it through and some do not. It is a very sad story on the history of addiction and vises.
At least he saved the court and tax payers time and money by pleading guilty (because he knew he was) unlike these other fools that go to court knowing full well that they are guilty, but plead not guilty!!!!!
He has another couple of years to beat his habit..let’s hope and pray that he is successful this time……
Ok I take the lashing comments back. I feel he should have his hands cut off. Seeing as he’s had MULTIPLE convictions of stealing power tools. Off with his hands.
Addiction is a disease of the brain, and I would think it quite unfair to penalise an addict in such a cruel way, cuz in the end, if his sickness is not addressed with proper care, he’ll still suffer from the disease. And then what will we do, punish him cruelly and sadistically over and over, each time he falls afoul of the law.
No, let’s give his disease the proper care like we would treat any other illness and with hope one day he’ll be cured or at least put his disease in remission.
But I can guarantee that cutting off his hands or beating him or plastering him with rotten fruit down in the stockades is not gonna do it. That will only serve to satisfy some sadistic fetish that some of you commentors have.
