“Desperate Lengths To Preserve Status Quo”

May 12, 2011

Bermuda Democratic Alliance Chairman Michael Fahy said the filing of the injunction earlier this week by some members of the UBP shows “the desperate lengths some will go through to preserve a status quo.”

On May 3, members of the United Bermuda Party [UBP] met and voted to authorize party officers to dissolve the UBP  and merge with the Bermuda Democratic Alliance [BDA] to form a new party – the One Bermuda Alliance [OBA].

Not all UBP members were in agreement, as on May 10, a group filed an injunction seeking to stop the UBP from dissolving. The complainants were UBP leader Kim.Swan, MP Charles Swan, former candidate Devrae Noel Simmons, former MP Erwin Adderly, ex-Senator Charlie Marshall, Robert Lewis, Ola Gabisi, Patience Godfrey, Austin Woods and party joint chairman Montell Currin.

Mr Fahy, who is tipped to hold a senior position within the OBA, said, “Kim.Swan’s actions and those of his colleagues goes to show the desperate lengths some will go through to preserve the status quo.”

“Instead of them thinking of what is best for the country and that this is something that will bring together experience with freshness of ideas, and let go of some of the past issues this country has faced due to the way the UBP and PLP have conducted themselves over the years, they are thinking only of themselves.”

“I hope that Kim.Swan and his colleagues will get themselves sorted out so the country can move on. Bermuda is tired of this bickering. There are urgent issues facing us. A failed education system. Rampant gang violence and an economy that is in terrible shape. People are losing their jobs – meanwhile a group of individuals try to stand in the way of progress. It is pretty pathetic and incredibly disappointing”

Mr Swan has not publicly spoken on his future plans and whether he will join the new party or not. However, there has been no indication that he will cross the floor to the PLP as his former UBP colleague Wayne Furbert did last year, and it is speculated that Mr Swan may sit in the House as an Independent .

The proposed launch of the One Bermuda Alliance [OBA] was scheduled for this afternoon [May 12], however it is unclear at this time whether it will move forward today or not, with confirmation expected to come later this morning.
