May 13: PRIDE Celebrity Lock-Up
PRIDE Bermuda will be hosting their third annual “Celebrity Lock-Up” on Friday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Washington House, Church Street.
As part of the “Celebrity Lock-Up”, well known locals such as Bruce Barritt, , Patrina ‘Power Girl’ O’Connor, Anthony Santucci, Senator Suzann Holshouser and Keival, The Captain will be publicly “arrested”, transported to “jail”, and tried in a “courtroom.”
Each person will then be sentenced to jail time accordingly. Only by raising sufficient bail from friends, family and business associates will the participants be able to get out of jail. The fund-raising goal for this year’s event is $50,000.
“The two previous events were such an incredible success, we had to do it again,” says Judith Burgess, Executive Director of PRIDE Bermuda. “The Celebrity Lock-Up is a fun and yet educational way to raise funds for PRIDE, while also involving local celebrities and the community in the awareness-raising process.”
“Our goal as an organisation is to enable adults and youth to learn and share solutions to promote drug prevention so that we can make our community safer, healthier, and more productive.”
“We are asking for local celebrities to volunteer for this event, and we encourage members of the public to come out and participate as well, whether by posting bail for a friend or colleague, observing the celebrities in ‘jail’, or by watching the public ‘trial’. As evidenced by E. Michael Jones’ attempted jail break last year, it promises to be an interesting and surprising event!”
PRIDE Bermuda is a registered charity committed to drug prevention education and awareness. Working in collaboration with families, teachers, and dedicated community activists, PRIDE Bermuda delivers education programmes to youth and adults. Research has proven that young people who avoid drug and alcohol use in their teens are better enabled to face adulthood drug free and thereby avoid harmful behaviours such as violence, crime, and sustained drug use. Last year’s Celebrity Lock-Up event raised $75,000 for PRIDE Bermuda.
