2011 Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards

52 of Bermuda’s finest student athletes were recognized recently at the 2011 Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards at Warwick Academy. The awards are held annually by the Bermuda School Sports Federation to highlight, recognize and reward the finest primary, middle and senior school student-athletes.

Denton Hurdle was a keen sportsman who attended Warwick Academy, Bermuda College and Dalhousie University. After completing his physical education degree he went on to teach at Warwick Academy. He was an avid sportsman and excelled in soccer, cricket and volleyball. His first love however was rugby. He went on to captain Teachers Rugby Football Club. He was also a regular member of the Bermuda National Team.

To be nominated for the award, students must display the following qualities: active participation, leadership, sportsmanship, self-discipline, dedication and cooperation. They must demonstrate positive attitudes in school. Nominees should also be good scholar-athletes as well as good role models. Only students in the final year of primary, middle or senior school are eligible for this reward.

Messiah Greaves from Harrington Sound and Rahzir Jones from West Pembroke were this years Primary School Winners. Greaves had a memorable 2011, winning the Telford Magic Mile, the KPMG Mile, The National Cross Country Championships and the BSSF Cross Country Championships. Jones also had a great year leading the West Pembroke football team to a memorable season in which they capped off an undefeated season by winning the Primary School Final 8-1. Jones also excelled on the track winning his division in the 2011 BSSF Primary School Track and Field Championships as well as the BSSF Cross Country Championships.

Honorable Mention was awarded to Nyanje Burgees from Somerset Primary, Syriah Lottimore from Northlands Primary, Taye Fishington from West End and Aaron Jacobs from Purvis Primary.

Dellwood swept the podium in the Middle School Division with Faheema Kyrah Scraders and David Jones Jr. both winning. Scraders has had an outstanding 2011. She is virtually unstoppable on the local track scene in the 800 and 1500 meters. She won a bronze medal at the 2011 Carifta games in the under 17 1500m despite only being 13.

She shattered the over 13 1500m record at the BSSF track meet where she won champion girl in her division. Such is her dominance that she has won champion girl in track field every year since primary four. She is also the captain of Dellwood’s netball team and still finds the time and energy to volunteer at summer camps. She has been an honor roll recipient for all reporting periods in her three years at Dellwood Middle School.

At 14 David has already represented Bermuda in baseball, football and track and field. He is a current member of the National football academy and has also made the honor roll every quarter during his three years at Dellwood. He won the M3 most outstanding writer award at Dellwood and takes part in the gifted and talented math programme. He led Dellwood to a dominating win in the over 13 division at the BSSF track meet. He also led their basketball, cricket and football teams as captain.

Honorable mentions at the middle School Level were awarded to Daniel Oatley from Warwick Academy and Keizhari Knight from Whitney Institute

Taylor Ashley Bean from Warwick Academy joined Ashley Aitken as the only two nominees to win the award at the Primary, Middle and Senior School level in the history of the awards. She is a 2010 CARIFTA Bronze Medalist and has competed in a total of six CARFITA games. She represented Bermuda last year in Singapore for the inaugural youth Olympics. She also won the 2011 Outstanding teen award in sports.

Current Bermuda Hogges player Daniel Andrade from Saltus Grammar School won the boys division. Daniel, deputy head boy and senior house captain, also represented Bermuda in the Under 20 football world cup qualifiers. He has a bronze Duke of Edinburgh award and is an AP scholar. Daniel has been on the Saltus headmasters honor role for the past four years and has attained 10 GCSEs; four A*, five As and 1 B. He is also a member of the National society of high school scholars.

Honorable Mentions were awarded to Ryan Gunn from Warwick Academy and Khianda Pearman from Bermuda High School.
