BHF Honours Oughton & Awards Scholarships
On June 24th three students were awarded scholarships and former Senate President Alfred Oughton was honoured at the Bermuda Health Foundation [BHF] award luncheon at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.
Mr. Oughton rose through the ranks at BELCO and retired as President and CEO on August 1, 1992. He was appointed to the Senate in November 1993 and elected as Senate President in March 1998 and retired ten years later. He is pictured below receiving his award from former Premier Dr Ewart Brown:
He was appointed to chair the Health Care Review Sub-Committee by the then Minister of Health, Social Services and Housing Quinton Edness in September 1993 “in response to community concerns regarding the escalation of health care costs and the quality of health care afforded to residents in Bermuda”.
The Bermuda Health Foundation said they believe it is fitting to recognize Mr. Oughton for his stellar work in the community, in particular for the thorough Health Care Review Report that he produced in May 1996.
Below Vincent Ingham, CEO of Ascendant Group, pays tribute to Mr Oughton:
The three medical students awarded scholarships by the BHF were Onea Mills, Ciara Talbot and Karissa Roberts. To date the Bermuda Health Foundation has presented scholarship awards totaling over $300,000.00.

Chairman of the Bermuda Health Foundation Philip Butterfield said that in spite of the current economic climate, the Foundation remains committed to assisting Bermudian students pursuing careers in the health care field.
Mr. Oughton is well deserved of this award. He showed such non partisan positions in his role in the senate. Well done Olf!
