A statement from the Bank said, “The number of students in need of donated school supplies is substantially higher this year than it has been in previous years, due to the current economic downturn.”

Michael Collins, Butterfield’s senior executive vice president said, “At Butterfield, we take seriously our commitment to supporting our community, particularly during challenging economic times.”

“On behalf of the bank’s senior management team, I’d like to thank the Butterfield employees who organised and supported the back-to-school drive initiative, exceeding last year’s drive by 60 percent.”

AF Smith provided the supplies at cost. Tim Smith, President & CEO of AF Smith said: “We were pleased to be able to help support Butterfield’s back-to-school drive and assist in providing young people in our community with the tools they need to succeed in school.”

Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith said, “Let me begin by saying that I am delighted to be here, on behalf of the Ministry of Education. It’s hard to believe that the new school year just three weeks away and for the third consecutive year, The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited and its employees have ensured that over 500 primary and middle school students in need are provided with essential school supplies.

“I must commend both Butterfield Bank and A.F. Smith for their ongoing selfless acts of kindness. Who knew that dressing in denim on four occasions this year would raise $6,000?”

“Which was then matched by A.F. Smith, who generously provided the school supplies at cost! Who knew that this simple, yet positive, effort would result in students from 14 primary schools and four middle schools receiving backpacks, lunchboxes, water-bottles, notebooks, pencil cases, pens, pencils, hand sanitisers and key-rings.”

“Such actions demonstrate true corporate citizenship and acceptance of the responsibility which belongs to all of us to make a positive and lasting difference in the lives of our students. Thank you Butterfield Bankand A.F. Smith for being such wonderful corporate citizens.”

“Our students will have no excuse for not being prepared for school – or for not doing homework – they have been provided with all the tools they will need to go with the teaching and learning. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for providing a great start to the new school year!”

“As we welcome wide eyed 5-year-olds ready to sponge up all of the knowledge that awaits them into the system – and as we welcome back other students who are transitioning onto the next level of their education – I want to assure the organizers of Butterfield Bank’s Back to School initiative that your gesture of providing the supplies our primary and middle school students require to make a positive start to the new school year is a welcome and critically important addition to our overall efforts to educate our children.”

“Once again, on behalf of the Ministry of Education, thank you to all of those who have made this possible. Thank you.”
