Photos: Moonlight Movie Series

August 7, 2011

The Moonlight Movie Series was held yesterday [Aug.6] at the Shelly Bay Field. The Department of Youth, Sport & Recreation sponsored “Movies in the Park” featured Camparama, with a pre-movie performance showcasing several young entertainers from summer camps throughout the island as well as ‘kiddie land’ and local food vendors.

The featured film for the evening was ‘Soul Surfer’, which tells the story of teenage surfer girl who summons the courage to go back into the ocean after losing an arm in a shark attack.

In 2003, 13-year-old Bethany Hamilton was surfing when a 14 ft tiger shark attacked her, ripping off her left arm off just below the shoulder. She spent time recuperating in the hospital, and less than one month after the incident  she returned to her board and went surfing again.

In 2005, she won the National Scholastic Surfing Association National Championships, a goal she had been trying to achieve since before the shark attack, and in 2008 she began competing full-time on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series.
