Videos: 3rd Annual ‘Give Back Games’
On Thursday [Sept.22] Horseshoe Bay Beach was the venue for the third annual ‘Give Back Games’. Teams were encouraged to ‘Compete to Give – Everyone Wins!’ while taking part in the beach Olympics which saw executives and staff from some of Bermuda’s leading international companies compete to raise money for their charity of choice.
A spokesperson from The Centre on Philanthropy said, “The sun shone and the tides rolled in as 11 teams from some of Bermuda’s leading international companies took to Horseshoe Bay Beach to participate in The Centre on Philanthropy’s third annual Give Back Games.”
“Each company represented a charity of their choosing and sent teams of eight to the beach to build sand castles, paddle kayaks [in tricky surf conditions], ‘walk the plank’, throw frisbees and run in flippers. All in all over $70,000 was donated to eleven charities with Tokio Millennium Re Ltd. emerging as this year’s Give Back Games champions.”
“Their victory earned $11,000 for WindReach, while ACE Tempest Re took 2nd place, earning $9,000 for Greenrock, and Guy Carpenter & Company, LLC and Validus Re tied for 3rd place, earning $6000 for Youth Net and Age Concern, respectively. All the other teams earned $5,000 for their charities.”
“Community Development Minister Michael Weeks was on hand to present the prizes and to judge the Sand Castle competition, along with Bruce Barritt of Barritt and Sons and Andrew Holmes of Gosling’s. Judging for the competition had to be moved forward by half-an-hour with the oncoming tide threatening to level some of the entries. In fact, each team had members dedicated to maintaining a makeshift sea wall to reduce the ‘risk’ of flooding.”
“This year’s Games also featured a Facebook Photo Challenge in the lead-up to the event. Companies were invited to submit a photo of their team in “training” for the Games, with the photo garnering the most ‘likes’ earning a 5-point headstart in the Games and an extra $500 for their charity.”
“Over 1300 total votes were cast, with Tokio Millennium Re Ltd. receiving 403 ‘likes’ and also winning in the Photo Challenge. They must have “trained” very hard.”
“In closing the event Pamela Barit Nolan, executive director for The Centre on Philanthropy, thanked all the teams, charities, sponsors and volunteers for helping make the day such a success: “We really enjoy this event at The Centre because it brings people together in a fun and healthy way to help make a positive change in our community.”

I think Tokio Millenium Re is really just a front for a fitness cult. I find their corporate dedication to exercise to be almost draconian. Congrats to all the teams and good job on raising money for some great organizations.
