Kumi Harford Murder Case Remains Open

September 24, 2011

police logoThe police said the “lengthy sentence” handed out to convicted murderer Antonio Myers will hopefully “act as a deterrent to others,” and said the case “remains open as detectives from the Serious Crime Unit continue to look for other offenders in the case.”

Mr Myers, 26, was sentenced yesterday [Sept.23] to life in prison for the murder of Kumi Harford. The Judge directed he must serve minimum of 38 years before he can be considered for parole.

30-year-old Kumi Harford was killed in December 2009, when a hail of bullets struck his car as he was driving home along on St. Monica’s Road. Antonio Myers was arrested in 2010 in connection with the murder, and convicted in March 2011.

Dr Cumberland, the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy, said Mr Harford suffered several gunshot wounds but that his death was caused, principally, by four particular gun shot wounds.

An expert witness testified that evidence determined that two shooters were involved and that two guns were involved; one a 9mm pistol and the other was a 40 calibre weapon.

The expert witness said shots were fired by the two shooters from two separate directions, and that bullets from both guns were recovered from Mr Harford’s body.

Mr Myers is the only person convicted thus far, has not revealed the second shooter’s name, and the case remains open while the police seek to bring the other perpetrator to justice.

Experts said the two guns used to kill Kumi Harford were “Parkside weapons,” and were used in a number of shootings including multiple murders and attempted the shooting of Jakai Harford – Kumi Harford’s brother.

A police spokesperson, “The Bermuda Police Service notes the sentence of the Supreme Court in the matter of R vs. Antonio Myers, for the murder of Mr. Kumi Harford.”

“The public will recall that Mr. Harford was targeted by gunmen as he sat in his car near his home on Mission Lane, Pembroke, on 5th December, 2009.”

“Following a lengthy trial, Mr. Myers was found guilty of the murder of Mr. Harford and the use of a firearm in that murder.”

“The lengthy sentence of life imprisonment – 38 years to be served before eligibility for parole – meted out by Puisne Justice Mr. Greaves will hopefully act as a deterrent to others before they consider committing these types of offences in the future.”

“The case remains open as detectives from the Serious Crime Unit continue to look for other offenders in the case. Anyone with information relating to the murder of Mr. Kumi Harford, including the location of the weapons used to commit this crime, is urged to contact the Serious Crime Unit in confidence on 247-1340.”

“Alternatively, anyone with any information that may assist detectives investigating this matter is encouraged to contact the confidential and independent Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.”
