Photos: 30th Annual Labour Day Banquet

September 3, 2011

The annual Labour Day Banquet was held at the Fairmont Southampton Resort last night [Sept.2], starting off the 30th Anniversary of the celebration of Labour Day in Bermuda. Those in attendance included Premier Paula Cox, Deputy Premier and former BIU President Derrick Burgess, Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith, Minister Kim Wilson, Attorney General Michael Scott, BIU President Chris Furbert and more.

The theme of this year’s Labour Day is ‘Sustaining Trade Unionism’, and the keynote speaker last night was Lawrence Hamm, President of the New Jersey based People’s Organization for Progress. A graduate of Princeton University, Mr. Hamm has been an advocate for African-American people and the cause of human rights for more than thirty years.

  1. Antigua Prime Minister To Speak At BIU Banquet | Bernews.com | August 10, 2012
  1. Family Man says:

Good to see the broad racial diversity at the BIU/PLP events.

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

I don’t think the “racial diversity” aat the BIU Banquet was any different from most events in Bermuda. There was an event going on next door to the BIU Banquet and the attendees were just as “diverse” as those at the BIU Banquet, but they didn’t look like me.

      • 32n64w says:

Was the adjoining event also of a public/political composition wherein a broad cross section of the members/electorate would be in attendance or was it a corporate/private function?

        • LaVerne Furbert says:

So, what you’re saying is that people who look like me are not the “corporate” type? There were two events at the same property and each event attracted two separate groups of people, which is typical of Bermuda. You know it and I know it. One only has to look at those in attendance at an OBA meeting those in attendance at a PLP meeting and you’ll see basically the same thing.

          • Inspector14 says:

I think LaVerne is saying that Bob & Craig look to ‘white’ to be ‘real Bermudians’.

          • Embarrassed BIU Member says:

            HMMMMMMMMM……….
Truely amazing!!!!!!!!! A Chris Furbert extavaganza at the expense of the struggling membership of the BIU.With 150 out of close to 4000 membership of the union and as a member only recordnising a handful of our members in attandence, and this LaVerne again ready to shoot from her A$$. For many years I was always so proud to call myself a union member not so much anymore. How in gods earth could Chris even think of putting on such an event when so many of its members can barely afford to go to the grocery store to buy $100. worth of groceries lots already having to turn to agencies such as the salvation army for assistance. I just pray that my fellow brothers and sisters soon wake up and become leaders of thier own organisation rather then continue to follow this joker down the road to nowhere. And again I beg you members to finally get Laverne out of there as well coz we,re paying her a gigantic salary to do nothing more then sit and listen to talk shows daily and call in and make us all look stupid. Please Bro. Otti Simmons come back and help save our union

            • 32n64w says:

… and of those 150 how many paid for their tickets and/or were invited guests at the expense of the BIU membership?

            • PEPPER says:

So are you saying that only a few members of the B.I.U.attended this extravaganza ……150 out of 400 paid up members !!!!!something is wrong with this picture……I think the members need to find out what this has cost…..and I am so fed up with Lavern calling the talk shows ad trying to correct everyone … does Chris Furbert have nothing better for her to do ?

          • 32n64w says:

That’s not what I’m saying at all but its interesting (an unfortunate for the both of us) that you read as much into my remarks as I clearly didn’t make any direct or indirect reference to “people who look like” you.

What I’m saying is you were attending a public function that one would hope represented a cross section of all Bermudians.

If you’re going to make comparisons to other events going on at the same time it should be an apples to apples comparison.

Who sponsored the adjoining function and what was it s basis?

          • bystander says:

oh god LF…..will you please quit rubbing S@#t in us white peoples faces? Like we ALREADY know you all have the checkbook, ok?

      • PEPPER says:

thank God, they did not look like you Lavern….

  2. freddyg says:

    Enjoyed the photos !! Thanks

  3. Big D says:

At Laverne Furbert, don’t belittle yourself by responding to every comment. You are no good as a public relations person. Free tip won’t charge you?

    • Rockfish#1and#2 says:

On the other hand, why do people belittle themselves by responding to every comment she makes?

  4. Truth is Killin' Me... says:

Glad to see some people in Bermy got money to spend…while the rest is strugglin to pay tha rent!!

  5. Inspector14 says:

What is this, no pictures of Zane & Dennis at the great BIU/PLP shindig?

    Oh, wait, never mind …

    • PEPPER says:

maybe Zane and Dennis has seen the light….

      • 32n64w says:

No need. Neither of their companies are unionized and yet the PLP Government has absolutely no problem handing the owners no-bid/sole tender contracts which in aggreate are worth inxs of $100,000,000. Total abuse of best practice entirely at the taxpayers’ expense.

PLP – doing more for party insiders leaving the electorate with less and less since 1998.

  6. Watching says:

I think the numbers in attendence really did show that people just don’t have the funds like they use to. Total in attendance 150 and a significant number of that 150 were not BIU members. Some guest, some guest of guest and also quite a few from the private sector.
Whilst it was a very good speach presented by Mr. Hamm, it’s no way Mr. Furbert and the BIU execitive can ignore these facts going forward.

  7. Respect says:

I am not the Premier’s biggest fan but how on earth can the Leader of a Country be seated BELOW the party of officials who invited her to attend? The Union Bies have no class and no concept of Protocol, knuckleheds. Hopefully the Premier’s attendance will keep loud mouth Chris at bay until christmas.

  8. Cleancut says:

I wonder if Bernews might be able to show the video of the speech or address made by the President of the BIU Chris Furbert to the Banquet and ALL of his membership.

    • Cleancut says:

      LaVerne??? Bernews???

      • bernews says:

Sorry no, just checked with the cameraman, we don’t have that on video…the only coverage we have [video wise] is all up on the other post – mostly the keynote speaker.

        • Cleancut says:

Bernews. I guess the BIU Presidents address is not part of the “seven videos”: “Labour day Banquet speeches”

  9. Terry says:

Irony of it all is when I viewed the photo’s before even reading any comments I came to a conclusion like most did.

Where are all the others. I would think there is limited seating and priceage but jingus….look et det lutt. I have never seen so much gold and diamonds and expensive dresses and $200-300+ hairdoose in a long time. And most notibley they are all people of the upper class.

But then again, bussiness as usual have your cake, eat it and the crumbs will fall whilst they pack………

Ps. No BIU members of the serving staff were hurt during this festive pre-election buffett.

Wonder what motor mouth is gonna say nah…………

Gotta defend those millions in bond ‘reductions’……..The Red Wine kid must be laughing his a*s off………………………………bwahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  10. Triangle Drifter says:

Most definetly only the A list people at this shindig. Where was the rank & file of the BIU?

  11. specialgirl4 says:

This event is held every year, during the Labour Day celebrations. Looks like it was another successful event! In Bermuda historically, events are often attended by Blacks, but seldom do whites attend events held by blacks. Many events in Bermuda are still not as diverse as they should be, which suggest just how far have we come in terms of racial relationships in Bermuda? The movement towards integration is both ways, and not just expected from one racial group.

    • Shaking the Head says:

Successful? What a joke. Provide your basis for such a ridiculous and typical racist comment with no factual support.
