Sailing: Burgess Wins In Maine

October 20, 2011

This past weekend, Blake Burgess, his crew (Nicholas Cabral) and two other Maine Maritime Academy sailors traveled to Massachusetts Maritime to compete in the Great Herring Pond Open Regatta in 420′s.

Arriving on Saturday morning, the conditions were just what the MMA sailors were looking for. The wind was blowing around 20 knots with gusts to 25. Burgess started off with a second place and a third place before they called it for the day because it was too windy.

Returning on Sunday, Burgess was one point behind the first place boat in the A division. Hungry for first, Burgess kicked off his second day with two first place finishes, beating the second boat both times by over 30 seconds! Burgess then went on to place 3rd, 1st, 7th, and finished the regatta with a 3rd place.

At the end of the day, Burgess ended up winning his A division by 18 points, blowing away his competition.

Burgess and his MMA team will be heading down to Annapolis, Maryland this coming weekend to compete in the MacMillan Cup Regatta.
