Roban Meets With Telecommunications Carriers
Today the Minister of Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy Walter Roban held a meeting with the Island’s Telecommunications Carriers as well as staff from the Department of Telecommunications regarding upcoming Telecommunications Reform.
A statement released by the Ministry said, “In this meeting Minister Roban released both the final drafts of the Regulatory Authority (RA) and the Electronic Communications (ECA) Bills, which had been reworked since the last Industry consultation in 2010 to incorporate stakeholder responses. However, the Minister stated clearly today that the substance of the reform policy has not materially changed.
“The Minister also announced that the Department of Telecommunications has developed timelines for the proper implementation of the many work streams required for the implementation of the reform process to ensure a smooth transition.
“Further, in order to progress the functions of the Authority, the Minister responsible for Telecommunications has been given transitional authority in section 110 of the RA bill which will allow for the implementation of all work streams to be started immediately, whilst the Authority is being staffed.
“This meeting follows a press conference on Wednesday, October 26th 2011, where Minister Roban had clearly indicated to media that he would meet with telecommunications carriers.
“The Minister thanked the telecommunication providers for their patience with the reform process and asked them to provide the Ministry with any comments or questions by Friday, 4th November to enable Government to table the Bills in the Legislature by the 18th November deadline.”
