I figured since tons of people come on here, that SOMEONE can help me! I really need a job..and I’d be so grateful if someone would help me…I work well with people and I’d make a great receptionist…someone please help me!!
Go to Labour and Traning and let us know if that helps.
Looking at the report everything is down except slight uptick in air arrivals. That said our total number of visitors is down compared to previous years and looking very anemic. Say, how do these results compare to the PLP’s Tourism Plan? Actually, that’s not a good question because the PLP never had one!! The PLP have more foreigners working for them than ever before, and they still cannot come up with a plan! Pathetic!!
How about a Teller, both banks are hiring them…
Do your resume up and walk into every business from one end of the Island to the other. I overheard this on front street – when you see a foreigner going to work – follow him/her – and tell the owner/supervisor – I am an unemployed Bermudian and they have my job, I want it back….
You mean the jobs that most Bermudians turned their noses up before the crisis? You mean the jobs that all of a sudden are “theirs” because they have hit hard times?
You guys are absolute jokers. I agree wholeheartedly that there are certain positions that should be reserved just for Bermudians. But don’t companies, that require a certain skill set to operate, to give you a job just because you are Bermudian.
This sense of over-entitlement based purely on where you were born as opposed to your skills or work ethic is one of the main reasons guest workers are required.
With all due respect, many Bermudians had better paying jobs before the recession. And government keeps saying that you have to take what is out there. And what is left are the jobs that Bermudians didn’t want to do before. Those jobs still have to go to Bermudians first if they want them. That is just the way it works and companies that have built there empire on cheap foreign labor had to know that some day this scenario could happen. And being that the recession hit in 2008 they should have been slowly but surely preparing for it as best they can. Because in about another year or two, we will have mostly Bermudians working where cheap foreign labor once did. As there will not be enough jobs to sustain the Bermudian population. This recession is not even close to being over.
And in addition to what you said , we have to come to terms with the fact that things are not going to be the same around here for a very long long time. Everyone who owns a business or property that they rent our are going to have to come to terms with the fact that they are going to have to get by with a whole lot less as there just isn’t going to be the cash flow like there was before.
Lower property prices , lower rent , lower profits for the banks , lower costs for maintenance people and mechanics etc , the list is endless. The days of massive profits and price gouging are over.
Bermudians stopped working in the hospitality industry because they (mainly) could no longer afford to. Now , those wages are going to look attractive , but only when everyone else who has a finger in how expensive this island has become realises that they ,as people who helped contribute to our outrageous price structure, are going to have to expect a lot less too. A LOT LESS !
And how would you know that they are foreigners? Sounds like stalking to me which I think is against the law and will not likely you get you a job except maybe at MAWI or Westgate. Please think before you write such ideas down and share them, we already have enough people locked up…
Labour and training is a waste of time, they never have anything!!! Both banks are hiring?? HSBC and Butterfield…ok I will give them a call..Thank you guys…I will let you know…
@ Wondering – I hope for the sake of Bermuda’s future you are joking…
@Wondering, you put a smile on my face…that is a good idea about following them to work, everytime I see a worker from abroad it breaks my heart…especially with Buzz….what is up with that…I’m just a single young mother trying to survive in my own country.
Just a few weeks ago I saw an ad in the paper, you should just go into the bank and drop of your application, its a high turnover job, so they will keep you on file.
So did you apply for a job at BUZZ????
@Ambassdor none of the banks are hiring Tellers…or do you know for a fact that they are??
And inneedofa-j-o-b probably best to ask the suspected foreigner if they are in fact a foreigner it can be confusing sometimes as all foreigners do not look alike althought that is a common misconception so you may just want to come out and ask them…perhaps you would make out much better if you did the first part of what Wondering suggests and that would be to get your resume together with references and go knock on doors just like you are doing here….leave out the part about telling the business owner to do what you want and not demand a job…..I do not know anything about BUZZ but would have a suspicion that they would love to have healthy Bermudians on their staff and not the unhealthy ones who are sick so often and who have many family members pass away requiring a 3 day mourning period…Those foreigners have much healthier families and they seem healthy too….
Not only are the foreigners “healthier” than their Bermudian “competition” but they also seem to know how to take the bus when their “car is in the shop” and they rarely have to skip work because “their child is sick” (for the 10th time this month) nor do they call in “sick” when it’s raining….jus sayin’….
@Navin Johnson Thank you, your words are much appreciated…
Labour and training I agree dont do a thing for you! They are trying to help the young people but if you are over 30 forget it! Its a big waste of time. First of all they need a plan on how to operate a job training department and at present they just dont have a clue. I went there and they wanted to know what company i had lost my job with and wished me luck in my job hunt. They called a few times over the year to see if I was working but they did absolutely nothing for me. No wonder so many of my friends have not registered. There are more unemployed out there than the government has projected. The govt. shouldnt waste money with that program. Even my mature age needs a job and some help. As to the person looking for a job all I can suggest is dressing business like and going door to door – your initial presentation will get you in the door faster than anything. Your skills will come next and your telephone habits. Today’s company wants its employees to work not text on their cell phones. Its hard out there to find a job and down the road we are all going to have to take lower wages to find a job.
Well Stated…L&T really does nothing for the community, gov. Needs to take a good look at it and asses wheather it is operating to its full capacity…I am 22…and my mom who is 50 said she’s still waiting for them to help her get a job from when she was young(of course she has her own career now)….but the point was to prove they get paid to do nothing!!! I signed up at an employment agency who said they love me…apperance and personality wise…and I am a top choice for a position, but the problem is no positions are available! I just don’t get how, you can’t get a job in your own country…its just really mind bugling and sad…all I( and other unemployed) need is the opportunity to prove myself…
@inneedofaJOB
I heard from people in immigration that buzz can’t keep bermudian staff like navin states – that’s why they have so many expats. If you have a good work ethic and can make time maybe that could work out for you. Best of luck.
The “BUZZ” is…….OBA 1….PLP 0
I just love the honey…..
oh Bee quiet
Dont make me laugh Bermudians… You are so judgemental about foreigners… They actually may be married to a Bermudian which gives them just the same entitlement as any other Bermudian!! Stop steorotyping and getting mad at them bc they have jobs that at one time you turned your nose up ro! Dont forget that! They been out there doin these jobs for many many years bc Bermudians were ‘too good’ to do it!!!
No Luck yet my fellow BerNews Bloggers….its really hard. *sighhhhh*
I official give up on my job search. I’m leaving this hell bound island.
