Video: Regiment Win 2011 ‘Big Boys Race’

October 2, 2011

Governor Sir Richard Gozney, Bermuda Regiment Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Brian Gonsalves, Chief Fire Officer Vincent Hollinsid, Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva, Assistant Police Commissioner David Mirfield and Prison Commissioner Lt. Col. Eddie Lamb all battled yesterday [Oct.1] to see who would claim victory at the “Big Boys Race” at the Police Gymkhana.

The Regiment won the honours for the day, with their Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Brian Gonsalves holding off a final stretch sprint challenge by Prison Commissioner Lt. Col. Eddie Lamb.

There were two races – a straight sprint while the other involved two laps around the field – and before the races began the gentlemen made their positions clear.

Prison Commissioner Lt. Col. Lamb said “While I don’t mean to threaten anyone, everyone who beats me will be going straight Westgate.” Police Commissioner DeSilva was not phased by this, as he pointed out that the event was being held at the Police Field for a reason, while the Regiment’s Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Gonsalves said the Regiment always takes all.

The video above is of the second race, which saw the ‘athletes’ cycle two laps around the field. The Regiment’s Lt. Col. Brian Gonsalves claimed a narrow victory over Lt. Col. Edward Lamb, while Assistant Commissioner David Mirfield finished third, Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva was fourth, Governor Sir Richard Gozney crossed the line in fifth, and Chief Fire Officer Vincent Hollinsid finished sixth.

The Police Gymkhana was resurrected last year after a 22 year hiatus. The event was open to all pedal cycle riders in primary and middle school, with the concept behind the day to allow youngsters of all ages to participate in bicycle races within a safe environment and foster positive interactions with police officers.

As one of the originators of the Police Cycle Gymkhana along with Ray Sousa and Gary Perinchief, I would like to congratulate the organizers of the new Police Gymkhana for doing a superb job with yesterday’s event. It was evident that the kids attending were having a great time from start to finish. It was very inclusive with lots of spare bikes and helmets on hand for children who didn’t have them. Young kids had a ball sitting on those huge shiny Honda police bikes while being allowed to sound off the sirens! This was police-public relations at its best. Congratulations to all concerned.

So does this mean ‘Gonzo’ is going to Westgate or to the ‘Gaurd Rm’?
RSM, Carry on. “Orders! Orders shun! Quick March! Ef! Ight! Ef! Ight! Ef! Ight!”.
All jokes aside, looks to be a job well done by all in good fun.
