Former Premier Encourages Jamaica Students

November 28, 2011

Former Bermuda Premier Dr Ewart Brown presented the keynote address at the prize-giving of his alma mater, St. Jago High School in Spanish Town, Jamaica this past weekend [Nov.24].

Dr. Brown reminded the students that they should heed the words of his aunt with whom he lived in Spanish Town. He recalled: “She told me, when I began to critique the teachers after a week at the school that I had come to drink the milk, not to count the cows!”

Dr. Brown exhorted the students to press on in the face of adversity, to “make lemonade out of lemons” and to hold high the name and reputation of the institution. The former Premier’s wife, Wanda Henton Brown, presented hundreds of prizes to outstanding students who had excelled on the field and in the classroom.

A 1964 graduate of the historic Jamaican school, Dr. Brown said it was an honour to be invited back to speak there. “I had a full experience there as a student-athlete and if I can give anything back to the school it is always my pleasure to do so,” he said last week.

Founded in 1744, St. Jago is one of the oldest, continuously operated schools in the Western Hemisphere. It is renowned for graduating some of Jamaica’s leading political figures, senior military officers, world class cricketers, academic scholars, performing artists and Olympic athletes.

Alumni include former Jamaica Prime Minister Norman Manley, playwright and screenwriter Trevor Rhone [who co-authored the classic Jimmy Cliff movie "The Harder They Come"], Olympic gold medallist Melaine Walker and acclaimed tenor Orville Manning.
