Chewstick: New Ricki Lake Childbirth Film

November 28, 2011

As part of Chewstick’s BlockDocs movie nights, the Doulas of Bermuda are proud to present a screening of “Down on The Farm: Conversations with Legendary Midwife Ina May Gaskin.”

The film will be screened on Thursday [Dec. 1] at 6.30pm at Chewstick’s Neo-Griot Lounge & Cafe’ on the corner of Court and Elliot Streets

This documentary follows executive producer Ricki Lake and director Abby Epstein to The Farm Community in Summertown, Tennessee, where pioneer midwife Ina May Gaskin talks candidly about the latest birth trends and the art of midwifery.

Ms Gaskin, who was featured in the original “The Business of Being Born” documentary sparked Ms Lake’s initial interest in natural birth, has continued to inspire the filmmaking duo’s advocacy efforts.

Also on the journey is pregnant actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who has enlisted a midwife to attend the birth of her second child and joins the filmmakers in meeting The Farm’s famous midwives and touring the picturesque birth cabins in the woods.

“Down on the Farm” is the first part of the projected four installment documentary series “More Business of Being Born”, created by recent “Dancing With The Stars” finallist Ms Lake and Ms Epstein as a sequel to the landmark “The Business to Being Born.”

The series continues their provocative and entertaining exploration of the modern maternity care system while offering a practical look at birthing options as well as poignant celebrity birth stories from stars including Alanis Morissette, Gisele Bundchen, Christy Turlington-Burns, Cindy Crawford, Molly Ringwald, Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Melissa Joan Hart.

BlockDocs movie nights are free, but donations toward the Chewstick Foundation’s programmes and infrastructure are much appreciated. Everyone is welcomed to attend. Please spread the word.

After the film has screened, it will be followed by an open-forum discussion.
