Videos: Premier’s Concert Showcases Local Talent
Scores of people turned out last night [Nov.19] at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium to see some of the Island’s top young performers take the stage for the Premier’s Concert.
The Premier’s Concert — first introduced in December of 1985 by then Cultural Affairs Officer Ruth Thomas — is presented by the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs within the Ministry of Community Development.
This year’s concert is the last time Ruth Thomas will serve as Compere, a position she has served in for many years, and shared this year with Jennifer Phillips. Premier Cox thanked her for her services over the years, and presented her with a gift. Ms Thomas said “it has been a labour of love” saying she not only loves the arts, but she loves young people and loves Bermuda.
In Motion School Of Dance:
Performers included the CedarBridge Drama Club, a flute solo from Sarah Hopkins, students from the Jackson School of Performing Arts, a rendition of ‘We are the World’ by pianist/singer Willard Burch, a dance duet from Dawnita Smith and Dezjuan Thomas, the Bermuda Institute Steel Band, the In Motion School Of Dance, Kassandra Caines, Kotoi Yamada, Patience Lowe, Chloe Brookes and Sarai Hines.
Bermuda Institute Steel Band:
Premier Paula Cox called the performances “sheer perfection”, saying “talent like that doesn’t just happen, it requires 90% perspiration, and 10% inspiration.” The Premier drew laughs when she said if her husband was speaking he would say the performances were magnificent, and ask “Paula, why can’t you do that?”
