Upcoming: Friends & Family Circle Walk
The Argus Group, in association with Bermuda Diabetes Association, is hosting a Friends & Family Circle Walk, in recognition of Diabetes Month 2011.
The walk will take place this Saturday (November 19), starting from Bulls Head Car Park in Hamilton at 8.45am and will follow a route that circles back to Bulls Head Car Park. The expected walking time is one hour.
Goodie bags will be provided to the first 100 participants to sign-up for the walk. Walkers can register and pay entry fees at: the Argus Building, 14 Wesley Street in Hamilton; BDA Resource Centre, 2 Beacon Street in Hamilton; Sportseller in Washington Mall or The Olympic Club on Dundonald Street.
Registration fees are $10 for individual participants and $15 for team entries. All children under 18 years old must be accompanied by a supervising adult.
The walk will begin with a warm-up session with Dr. Don Peden from The Olympic Club at 8.30am. Following the walk, participants are welcome to take part in the free health screening event at Bulls Head Park, ‘Victory over Diabetes,’ from 9.30am onwards. Blood sugar, blood pressure and other screenings will be available at the event, along with weight management and dietary advice.
Diabetes is a condition that is considered to be an epidemic in Bermuda and around the world. According to recent statistics, as many as one in four Bermudians are living with or are at risk of diabetes.
Diabetes occurs when high levels of sugar (glucose) are present in the blood because of the body’s inability to regulate its production. Classic symptoms include frequent urination, increased thirst and unexplained weight loss. Over time, diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage, strokes and coronary heart disease.
Alison Hill, Chief Executive Officer of the Argus Group, says: “Naturally, as diabetes is one of the biggest killers on the island and Argus is one of Bermuda’s leading health insurance providers, raising awareness of this disease, including its symptoms and how to prevent it, is at the top of our community agenda. Despite greatly affecting a person’s health, diabetes can often go undiagnosed. We hope that the public comes out in full force to support this walk and take advantage of the free screenings at the ‘Victory over Diabetes’ event that follows.”
Kuni Frith-Black, Executive Director of Bermuda Diabetes Association, says: “Diabetes is all too common in Bermuda and a serious threat to the quality of life for so many. This event helps us to meet our objectives in terms of understanding diabetes and increasing public knowledge of the disease. We rely heavily upon the public for their volunteer services and financial contributions to run our many programmes, so we hope to see lots of people, of all ages and backgrounds, coming together on Saturday to support us.”
The Friends & Family Circle Walk is part of a full calendar of events organised by Bermuda Diabetes Association to mark November as Diabetes Month. Throughout November, there will be donation buckets positioned island-wide and the charity will be working to increase membership and raise awareness of the lifestyle changes that can prevent diabetes.
