Digicel & Transact Relaunch Long Distance
[Updated] Digicel and Transact have recommenced the marketing and sales of its international long distance (ILD) over VoIP offerings to all consumers in Bermuda effective 1:00 pm today [Dec.21].
This announcement follows the decision of the Supreme Court of Bermuda last Thursday in which the Chief Justice discharged Digicel and Transact from all undertakings provided to the Court in respect of the long distance services being offered by Digicel and Transact.
This decision paved the way for Digicel to recommence offering International Long Distance through VoIP. Digicel had previously launched this service, but was compelled to suspend promotion and marketing on 27th October.
Digicel and Transact’s ISP services were unaffected by the Court proceedings and shall continue to be offered to the public without impediment.
There are three plans available, such as the $35 Digicel Unlimited plan which includes unlimited calls to the USA, Canada, UK and Ireland. For more information about Digicel Long Distance visit here on their website, or email info.bermuda@digicelgroup.com.
Update 6.40pm: Government issued the following statement this evening, “Following Digicel/Transact’s announcement today that, effective immediately, it has resumed offering, selling, and marketing its International Long Distance (ILD) via Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) service, the Government would like to state that it intends to refer the matter of whether this service is in compliance with the terms of the licences provided to Telecommunication (Bermuda and West Indies) Ltd (TBWL) and Transact Ltd to the Telecommunications Commission, pursuant to Section 16 of the Telecommunications Act 1986.
“Additionally, Government will soon initiate a consultation period with industry stakeholders regarding a change in policy for the provision of international long distance service.”

Idiots!!! you can’t offer the service. Transact can only provide LD to fixed line customers….Digicel gurella marketing is just plain stupid and nobody likes them in any market they set up in….

all clogged up is clearly feeling the ill effects of a low fibre diet! A big strange to say that nobody likes Digicel – I thought they were the market leader in Bermuda? This sort of anonymous spurious allegation making is really obnoxious. Digicel wants to compete in this market and provide services to the consumer. Ultimately it is the Bermudian people who will decide on what service provider they wish to use based on price, service and quality. What is wrong with that? Only a dyed in the wool monopolist would argue otherwise.
I am glad that Digicel is offering its long distance again, the Supreme Court said that they could offer their long distance service. I am just mad it has taken them so long to offer it again. Look at Belco, there is no competition, consequently they do as they like. My BELCO surplus charge grows higher and higher each month.
In these circumstances, Long distance has been opened up for all to compete in, that is a good thing. Cellone and TBI should not use the Government as a shield to do their dirty deeds. Come out in the open and state why you do not want Digicel to have long distance.
TBI: its clear, they are a one trick pony and fighting for their lives. Not only are they fighting against Digicel, they have magic jack, skype, Vonage, Face Time, and other things to deal with.
Cellone: they do not want Digicel doing anything that they cannot do !
Digicel have the licence, let them offer the service.

I agree with DM… if the Supreme Court said Digicel could offer the service again, why shouldn’t they go ahead and do it?
HellOne seems to not want to provide any kind of offer for its customers.
All clogged up, you need the plunger (of truth) competition is good. The Court said licence is lawful. The Government is scared as it does not want to make the BIG DOGS mad so it is forced to take a No harm, No foul position.
Digicel should be brave and drop their prices lower !

Strange how Digicel can say last Friday that they will wait to offer LD to the pub lic until they have ironed out any outstanding issues remaining with Government yet they today have announced that these LD packages are now for offer.
If this is any example of our Digicel is managed I hope they have deep pockets after this LD issue is finally resolved cause its gonna be an expensive new year.
Also the naivity of these comments is quite shocking as it appears in Bermuda you can’t fool some of the people some of the time you can fool all of the people all of the time.
Digicel news shouldn’t be placed under Bernews’ business heading it should be placed under entertainment

Keep in Mind this is over VOIP meaning the quality of the call is not 100% like a regular telephone link hence the cheap price..
Kudos to Digicell. At least they TRY and offer deals whereas HellOne enjoys gouging their customers.
