Dancing dolls, waltzing flowers and the Sugarplum Fairy returned to Bermuda when the In Motion School of Dance presented their second annual Nutcracker Holiday Spectacular on Friday [Dec. 16] and Saturday [Dec. 17].

Approximately 80 students, aged from seven to 18 years old, participated in the City Hall performance, which featured choreography from local and international artists.

A two-act ballet composed by 19th century Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, “The Nutcracker” — which tells the story of a young prince’s kingdom in the grip of an evil rat king — has been a Christmas season favourite of dance troupes for more than a century. In Motion added a modern twist to the old favourite, showcasing their dancers wide range of skills.

The In Motion Nutcracker School of Dance Holiday Spectacular was a two-part show, and showcased various dance styles including ballet, tap, jazz and modern.

“Our debut performance for ‘The Nutcracker’ was last year, it was very popular, and we had very good feedback from it, so we decided to do an encore presentation this year,” said Liz Pimental, director of the In Motion School of Dance.
