PLP Confirm Kim Wilson In C#34

December 13, 2011

[Updated] This morning [Dec.13] the Progressive Labour Party held a press conference and confirmed that Kim Wilson will represent them in Constituency #34, Sandys South Central at the next general election.

In September 2011, Sandys South Central held their candidate selection meeting, with Senator Kim Wilson beating out Makai Dickerson, Marcus Jones and Larry Scott for the spot.

The PLP’s Walter Lister presently holds the seat, and will not stand for re-election. Mr Lister — who was first elected to Parliament in 1976 — won 69.26% of the vote against the UBP’s Sarah Burrows [649-284] in 2007.

Senator Wilson, having attained a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Illinois, a Master’s in Education from Indiana University, and a LLB from London University in the United Kingdom, was admitted to the local bar in 1995. Her legal background includes Criminal and Civil Litigation, Estates Planning, Wills and Probate

She has served on a number of Government boards and committees such as the Human Rights Commission, E-commerce Advisory Board, Criminal Injuries Compensation Board and the Board of Governors for CedarBridge Academy.

In October 2006, Senator Wilson was appointed as a Government Senator in the Upper House. From 2007 until 2010, Senator Wilson served as the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

In November 2010, she was appointed as the Government Senate Leader and Minister of Economy Trade & Industry, and in November 2011, Senator Wilson returned to the position of Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

Update 1.43pm: Senator Wilson’s full remarks follow below:

I am truly humbled and privileged to stand here this morning as I announce my candidacy for Constituency # 34 Sandys South Central.

I also want to thank The Hon. Walter Lister JP.MP for all of his years of dedicated service to the people of Constituency 34 and I can assure him and the people that I am committed to working tirelessly to address their needs.

Having married a Somerset man, our home is less than a 5 minute walk from here….

We have settled in this area and I am proud to call it our home. My Husband and I are raising our children in the proud traditions that are unique to this community.

There are some very endearing qualities about living in Somerset such as the fact that generations of families- including the Simmons family have resided in this area ….. This serves as a testament to the community spirit shared in Somerset.

There is a pride in Somerset that is distinctive to this community. Our seniors are its most treasured asset. People look out for one another and are quick to help out a neighbour in need.

I chose as the location for my announcement for candidacy- the back drop of Allen Temple AME, the church where my family and I attend.

What better place to commence ones…political campaign ———than to be situated in front of God’s House… in God’s country–

Sandy’s is steeped in history. It has a sporting legacy with the Somerset Trojans football team and every other year it hosts the biggest holiday event in Bermuda – Cup Match. We have even managed to pull out a few victories over our rivals in the East.

I was raised with the knowledge and importance of public service. I have been blessed with opportunities to provide my service in many areas.

Having served in Government in various capacities- including holding some rather significant Portfolios such as the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry as well as the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, I can say that the experiences I have gained will better equip me to serve the members of constituency 34- Sandy’s South Central I have a proven track record.

And when I was appointed as the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, while some may have been daunted – I embraced the opportunity of a new Ministry by shaping it and moulding it and not only ensured that people knew what this key Ministry stood for, but they understood how the Ministry served them.

In my capacity as Minister of ETI, I pioneered an unemployment drive – the first of its kind, I took significant steps to educate the populace about the importance of ensuring that international business thrived in our community. I also took steps to better strengthen the relationship between Government, the Unions and Employers.

Whilst the Minister of ETI, the One Stop Career Centre inched closer to becoming a tangible reality and I championed the cause of small business entrepreneurs by ensuring that the Bermuda Economic Development Corp. was changing its pace with the changing economic times.

I have the knowledge and I have the experience…. I come before you today with a proven track record!!

I have had the opportunity to spend countless hours working for the people of Bermuda in my capacity of Attorney General and Economy Minister. I now want to devote this same kind of passion to the people of Constituency 34.
I have canvassed the area relentlessly and I hear your concerns.

As a wife, mother and activist, I know intimately the challenges and concerns that our community is facing: Unemployment, the economy.., and crime in the area are all things that I am equipped to tackle.

As a Senator and Government Minister, I understand how Government works and I am well positioned to advance your views, ideas and desires to influence policy and decision making- now and in the future.

I pledge to serve the community by listening to your concerns, and to communicate and engage in meaningful dialogue for the sole purpose of finding solutions together.

I also pledge to be responsible and serve as an agent for you by providing the resources, information and counsel you require from your representative-a representative for all people in Constituency 34.

Constituency 34 is a culturally rich community. I am here to serve you and our community in finding creative solutions to our public needs, updating the area in order to bring new prosperity and provide long-term economic stability, and improving the overall quality of life for all Sandy’s residents.

I truly believe that together in Sandy’s we can do more, and I welcome your partnership and support.

        • Yup says:

Another lawyer that has done nothing to root out corruption in the PLP. This is why Paula likes her. Business as usual in PLP.

      • LOL (original) says:

Agreed why did he even put his name forward in the first place.

        LOL not ready at all.

  2. sigh says:

    • Nil points says:

  3. Vote for Me says:

    Sen. Wilson
I am sure you will be well received by all voters in Bermuda and escpecialy C34. You have been an excellent Minister in all of the portfolios that have been assigned to you. You have also been an excellent Senator. Well Done!!

  4. Lazy Fools says:

I saw Kim the other day… driving her car while chatting on the phone. So what’s the deal. Do the PLP’s laws not apply to them?

    • Hmmmmm says:

Of course they do but you would prefer she not speak to whoever that was on the phone so they could say “I tried to reach her but she’s too hard to get….”; with you joining in on the chorus. Can’t win for trying.

      • laughing says:

So that can be my excuse and defence to the judge when I get stopped

      • Nil points says:

What like parking and then claiming that she ddn’t have to pay arking tickets.

      • youngbermudian says:

LOL!!! can’t wait to see what the rest of the UBP/BDA/OBA fans have to say about this!

    • THE HELL says:

I saw one of the magistrates few times driving without his seat belt on..What the F****

    • drunkenUrsula says:

  5. Gambler says:

  6. Somebody's Momma says:

As a voter in Const. 34, we look forward to working with Min. Wilson. A woman with great qualities and so much to offer our community.

  7. Kinda Lingers says:

The only sane person in the whole of PLP as far as I can see.

  8. JT says:

Kim Wilson, David Burch and Rolfe Commissiong. How can these three possibly represent the same party? Ms. Wilson is an exceptional candidate. Congratualtions to the PLP for recognizing this, but how can you put forward these other two?

    • Triangle Drifter says:

So true. It is like night and day. Trouble is, the PLP has far more Burchs & Commissiongs than it does Wilsons. She is way overuled.

      • Ummm... says:

Last time I checked, Senator Kim Wilson is a Cabinet Minister holding a critical portfolio and neither David Burch nor Rolfe Commissiong are in either the Senate or the House of Assembly. It seems clear who the PLP values more.

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

Shawn Crockwell, Ras Mykkal and Grant Gibbons. How can these possibly represent he same party? You’re quite correct, Senator Wilson is an exceptional candidate, but so are David Burch and Rolfe Commissiong. I guess the oBA has all perfect candidates

      • Triangle Drifter says:

Who says all of the OBA candidates are perfect? Not me.

There you go again reading something that is not there. A great imagination you have.

What does this thread have to do with the OBA anyway?

      • confused says:

your posts do more harm than good for your party. one would imagine its time for you to stop.

  9. Jonathan Smith says:

Congratulations Kim! I’m sure as you continue to canvass Constituency 34 the voters will be left in no doubt as to your tenacity and willingness to serve!

    • drunkenUrsula says:

tell her keep off Cook’s Hill not welcome @all….

      • JT says:

I’d be pleased to speak to my elected PLP representative, but I have not seen hide nor hair of them at my residence in 13 years.

  10. THE HELL says:

These idiots need to change their script writer every now and then. Because everytime they bring out a new candidate its the same old BS…we need to work together for the better of the country yada yada yada!! Tell me something that’s gonna make me say “Yeah I’m gonna vote for you!” another thing, their reading from a script, its not from the heart…

  11. JB says:

I can’t believe she will run for a party that is going to stab its voters in the back! What they giveth they can taketh away! Will Kim help the pensioners who are now used to no TCD fees, no land tax and struggling with the screw up of Future Care? Please explain to me how she can live with herself while Paula suggests such ridiculous attempts to raise funds to pay off Dr Brown’s and her overspending. How about she lead the way with a pay cut!! MPs need to lead by example.

  12. drunkenUrsula says:

should have been Marcus Jones a Cooks Hill boy..son of the soil …who is she??????

  13. 32n64w says:

Congratulations Senator Wilson. The PLP have chosen a progressive, intelligent and positive representative for Bermuda. I look forward to your informed and forward thinking contributions going forward.

  14. choices says:

    Dear Kim,

please hurry up and get elected the PLP needs a new Leader and you are it, Paula’s credibility is zero and her big words alone cant remedy the mess shes created n minstry of finance.

get someone bright from private sector to be minister of finance who isnt just a lawyer and most importantly get rid of that useless old woman from Atlanta who is wasting peoples time pretending to be a consultant

if bermuda is stuck with PLP we need you Kim

    • Rick Rock says:

And, again if Bermuda is stick with the PLP, it’s possible that if Kim’s in charge she will tell Ewart, Burch, Zane and Rolfe that the country is better off without them. Perhaps she can build a government that is not insane.

  15. Malachi says:

I’d really like to know by what yardstick Ms. Wilson is being measured?

Is it here academic qualifications or her personna?

Some time back I recall her saying that she should not have to pay parking fines. I too have seen her on the phone while driving. Moreover, a few weeks ago I observed her parked in a bus lay-by talking to a friend. In spite of the fact that a bus came by with disembarking passengers, Ms Wilson completely ignored the bus and kept on with her conversation as if the bus wasn’t there. I really have a problem with people like this and from my perspective, she confirmed the kind of self-centered personality which I had long suspected.

I have little time for people like her and absolutely NO time for politicians like her!

  16. sigh says:

The OBA seem to have gone on strike from announcing candidates…

  17. Wil says:

One afternoon a lawyer was riding in her limousine
when she saw two men along the road-side eating grass.
Disturbed, she ordered her driver to stop and got out to investigate.
She asked one man, “Why are you eating grass?”
“We don’t have any money for food,” the poor man replied. “We have to eat grass.”
“Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I’ll feed you,” the lawyer said.
“But madam, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree.”
“Bring them along,” the lawyer replied.
Turning to the other poor man she stated, “You may come with us, also.”
The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, “But madam, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!”
“Bring them all as well,” the lawyer answered.
They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was.
Once under way, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, “Madam, you are too kind.”
“Thank you for taking all of us with you.
The lawyer replied, “Glad to do it. “You’ll really love my place.
“The grass is almost a foot high.”

Come on now…you really didn’t think there was such a thing as a heartwarming lawyer story…did you????

  18. Makai Dickerson says:

Pause….. please everybody reading these comments read up at every post above mines. Because this goes out to EVERYBODY doubting me especially those who spoke about me on this. Your not worth my naming because you are a complete distraction. I have more political achievement, community commitment and passion for the people on the tip of my finger then you have ability to even speak to me on. My first step towards a seat was a good one, I’m not embarrassed nor disappointed. I stepped to the plate its called confidence, you should try and gain some but then again you don’t even have enough to step out with your real name on a news blog. Damn I use pin names sometimes but I could never imagine never stepping out of it. My life’s not a charter behind a computer screen. Its going to be a clear point coming from me when it comes to on line posting so keep your little election game far away from my name.

I put myself up because unlike you I truly believe in having the candidate most likely to work and represent my community and I know I consider myself that. There are many who feel the same, but in a ring of great possibilities one has to prevail ,and one did. Senator Wilson is a great candidate because she is a hard worker who gets things done and I support her. That’s why I was there yesterday sick with a cold to stand with her. Trust and believe, that I may not have won but I have a part to play in the work that needs to be done and that’s the point. Its not about the title its about the work. When you think like that you don’t end up making such foolish comments as yours on news stories. Senator Wilson is ready to work as am I, so please keep My name out of your mouth if you don’t have anything respectful to say
about me. I’m not for petty talk.

    • confused says:

“keep My name out of your mouth if you don’t have anything respectful to say
about me” and “i have more political achievement on the tip of my finger then you have ability to even speak to me on”

I know nothing about you, but from those comments you have only proven there point. You come off childish and arrogant (amazing to see the two together). Think before you post sir.

  19. Makai Dickerson says:

And you have a right to you opinion Confused and you expressed such in a respectful way. Yet I stand by my comments as they are directed to disrespectful people who do nothing to help situations. If you have something to say about me be respectful or I will be very direct. Believe me I know who I’m talking to and have made myself clear. Happy holidays to you.
