Shooting In Somerset, No Injuries

December 10, 2011

[Updated] At approximately 11pm this evening [Dec.10] there was shooting in Somerset, with unofficial reports indicating that multiple shots were fired, and that no one was injured. There are a number of police officers in the area, and they have blocked part of Somerset Road/Cambridge Road off.

The police are searching the area, and we see what appears to be at least two evidence markers the police traditionally use to mark shell casings. Police have not made an official statement on this incident, however we will update as able.

Update Dec 11, 12.28am: Unofficial reports suggest a group of men were congregating in the area, and the shooter[s] rode past on a motorbike and fired two shots at them.

Update, Dec 11, 6.08 pm: Police issued a statement on this incident, which follows below:

Around 11pm on Saturday, December 10th two unknown men on a motorcycle were traveling through the Somerset Road, Cambridge Road Sandys parish area when the pillion passenger discharged a firearm in the direction of a group of men standing outside Long Hours Variety store.

Police were on mobile patrol in the vicinity and immediately pursued the suspects who made good their escape traveling east along Somerset Road.

The scene was cordoned off and forensic evidence found suggested that a firearm had been discharged; however no one has reported being injured.

Officers conducted a further search for the offenders in the Alton Hill, Southampton area; however they were not located. The main suspect is described as wearing a silver helmet while the motorcycle rider is described as wearing a dark coloured jacket.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.

Approximately 90 minutes after this incident, there was another shooting in the Devonshire area.

Iv decided I am not moving back to Bermuda after university. I will be of significant value to IB, but I don’t care. Islands a war zone.

    • Time will tell says:

I understand why you say that but this happens all over the world yes Bermuda is a small island however, shootings and killings happen all over the world.

      • Tez says:

We realize that shootings happen all over the world, but anywhere else it’s much less likely to not be happening in your own neighborhoods or a few streets over… It’s too close for comfort!

  6. Proud to be Bermudian says:

    These F-ers need a life!

  7. Time for Action, not Words says:

I live in the Mangrove Bay area, and drive past Charing Cross every day on the way home. The Somerset Police Station is literally around the corner from the Charing Cross, and this still doesn’t prevent the members of MOB from dealing drugs right there practically every day. I think that the only way that it could be more obvious to the Police was if they were dealing drugs right in the parking lot of Somerset Police Station. Sometimes, when there is a football game at the Club, you don’t see any MOB members dealing drugs outside Charing Cross, because they have all gone to SCC to deal drugs. I have it on good authority that the police officers stationed in Somerset are warned to NEVER walk down Cambridge Road alone because of the fear of the MOB. There have been too many lives lost or damaged due to the scourge of drugs, which has been allowed to become like a Cancer on our Society. The Police do not have all of the answers, and neither do our politicians. The time for talk is over, and our entire community needs to take Action NOW! I hope that we can stop this insanity before anyone else loses their life.

    • Smh says:

Smh. So wat the h*ll u expect us to do?lol

    • AMEN says:

I am with you on this one, I drive by everyday on my way home and wonder how the devil the police allow this to happen right in their own back yard. These guys have no fear of being held accountable for their actions. I also blame the owners of the 2-3 other business in this same area for not calling the police every hour to complain about these stragglers

PLP and OBA the time has come for you to hold a special parliamntary session to amend the sentencing provisions for fiream possession and usage.

possession – 20 years with no parole before 20 years

usage – 30 years with no parole before 30 years

if you each lose 2000 votes by passing this amendment, tough.

  20. Young Adult says:

Bermudians need to cut the blame game and stand up with a solution. I’m sure so of you who commented on here know someone who is acting a rightful fool! Have you reported them. To my dear old older generation, not on this post but on many other you blame this generation for the way it is today, I ask you, wasn’t it your generation that raised this generation? Your response may be that after a certain age we are responsible for our action, you right! However, I ask you wasn’t it your generation that drop the ball, you lead by example, actions speak louder than words. No blame, just hoping the right person reads this and realizes we are all to blame. Why you may ask, because this is our Bermuda. We need to take it back, state a claim. Many of our teachers are sitting by the waste side letting rude child slip by, let them be somebody else problem, that teacher is responsible for the thug we see now. Case in point the thugs that we have seen in the paper of late. My simple suggestion is we need to forget the police, forget the army and stand together as a people taking out Country back. Mother’s, father’s, family and friends, the hoodlum living under your roof who you probably living off of or are using to help sustain you, kick him out! Remember with them living there your life is in danger, so protect yourself and our community.

    • Young Adult says:

Please excuse the grammatical errors, rushed typing this on my phone!

    • Get a grip says:

Well said young adult. As a parent of two young teenage boys we have to do everything in our human power to instill values in our children. Life is about choices and sometimes, despite our best efforts people make bad choices, however, we as parents have to be parents and not friends. It is our job to punish when they aren’t doing what is expected. It is our job to give them curfews and stick to them. They are not the adults, we are. It is not their jobs to raise themselves. It is so easy to play the blame game but these thugs were raised by someone, and all too often the parents were hoping someone else would do it. They think it is the teachers, grandparents, etc that should discipline. Unless we take responsibility for what is happening in our island, we will not see a change in our next generation. Thugs are raising thugs. We must love but we must be tough. If we know that we instill good moral values in them and they still take the wrong path then it is on them, but housing them and helping them when they do wrong is not helping, it is enabling. If they think they can take care of themselves then don’t bail them out when they are in trouble, and don’t live off their money because that is condoning their behaviour. Worst of all, don’t say he or she is an angel when you know full well they are out there doing a pack.
Please Lord help us on this island and be with us through these tough times.

DUHHH GET WIT THE PROGRAM !

    • JT says:

So if the media just stopped reporting on these matters those committing the crimes would start working towards bettering their lives and being upstanding citizens?

    • Ya says:

So let me get this straight… you blame the media for scarring these guys lives because they put their names in the newspaper after they had gone and shot somebody? So let me make sure I understand you… them shooting somebody isn’t the reason they can’t get a job, it was their name in the paper?

    • Karen says:

You are joking -right? How the H is it the media fault for bad behaviour which seems to be common place in our society today. These people were thugs LONG before they came to media attention. They were well on their way to being thugs when parents were addressing them as “Man” at two years old with chains that weighed as much as them around their necks, shorts down to their ankles, hats turned backward, watching the parents smoking, drinking, cursing and setting “wonderful” examples for them. Thugs in training who now have MORE thugs in training! Great community we are creating! Put the blame where it belongs-in the homes! Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!

      • star man says:

Children having babies… children raising children… without a father. That’ll do it! It all boils down to the black family and how it desparately needs healing. But the PLP, who have wasted all our tax money, are cutting the very social programmes and family oriented charities that are addressing these healing issues.

  25. um juss sane says:

  27. Street Business says:

When we focused our attention on IB and put Bermudians second, we wonder why we have lost generation?

They tell locals from college you don’t have experience, tell us we are not experienced to landscape, paint and construction at these Portuguese ran businesses. What they don’t mention is the cheap labor financial benefits. House 8 of them in a 2 bedroom paying wages that a Bermudian wouldn’t be Able to survive on.

Everyone knows this but its never mentioned. Smh Bernews, maybe you can dig into this and exose this underworld….

  28. Young Adult says:

    2 Chronicles 7:14
    King James Version (KJV)
14If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

  29. Ra's Al Ghul says:

Crime cannot be tolerated. Criminals thrive on the indulgence of society’s understanding. Crime. Despair. This is not how man was supposed to live. The League of Shadows has been a check against human corruption for thousands of years. We sacked Rome, loaded trade ships with plague rats, burned London to the ground. Every time a civilization reaches the pinnacle of its decadence, we return to restore the balance.

No one can save Bermuda. When a forest grows too wild, a purging fire is inevitable and natural. Tomorrow the world will watch in horror as its greatest city tears itself apart through fear.

  30. Enough already says:

    Enough already,

Yes, some parents are to blame for the actions of their children but what about the parents that don’t allow their children to enter their homes with a hat on or their butt cheeks exposed. The children leave the house and pull their pants down so far society has accepted it! We can start by fining people for indecent exposure because I’m surely tired of seeing butt cracks!!
