38-Yr-Old Man Shot In Southampton

December 21, 2011

[Updated - At approximately 7.00pm police received a report of a shooting at a East Avenue Southampton residence, and a 38-year-old man has been injured]

A short while ago this evening [Dec.21] there was shooting in the Southampton area. An ambulance was seen leaving the scene with a police escort, and unofficial reports indicate that one person was injured. Details are limited at this early juncture, however we will update with additional information as able.

There have been five firearm incidents so far in December, with this shooting following after an incident this past weekend in which a 24-year-old man was shot multiple times, with his injuries requiring him to be airlifted overseas for medical treatment.

The first three shootings this month – in which no one was injured – were in the the Border Lane East, Devonshire area [Dec.11], Cambridge Road, Somerset area [Dec.10], and the St. John’s Road, Pembroke area [Dec.8].

Update 7.55pm: The shooting took place in a residential area off Horseshoe Road. Police are presently on scene, with the area cordoned off with crime scene tape.

Update 8.06pm: Police confirmed that there was a shooting in the East Avenue, Southampton area, and that one person has been injured.

Update 8.30pm: The Forensics Unit has arrived, and are beginning to investigate the scene.

Update 8.35pm: Police Spokesperson Robin Simmons said, “Around 7:05pm on Wednesday, December 21st police received a report of a shooting at an East Avenue, Southampton residence. A 38 year old man has been injured as a result. Officers immediately attended the area and cordoned off the scene.

“A full investigation into this incident is underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.”

Mr Simmons also said they believe the suspect may have left the scene on foot. Listen below:

Update 8.57pm: Some of the area residents have been out of their homes over the past 90 minutes, watching the police at work. One resident told us he heard the sound of gunshots, but said he was “puzzled” as he did not seem to hear a bike or car leaving afterwards.

Update 10.28pm: Video of scene/police statement.

Update Dec.22: As of 7am today, the shooting victim is listed as stable on a surgical ward.

And who have the Parole Board recently released from Prison after serving only a 3rd of their sentance for very similar crimes?

    • dangerousMinds says:

And WHAT?? Don’t speak on things you have NOTHING to do with and know NOTHING about!!! You people always pointing fingers, you don’t know shit bout nothing and the Victim is my Family so id the person you referring to so just Watch the things you say, cause you never know. ALL you people got soooo much to say and ya all INTERNET GANGSTAS but when its time to speak up & make a change, Everyone quiet and don’t wanna come together!! Tired of the Fakes and Lames! Get yaself together before you point fingers, it takes more then 1 person to make a change and as you see its WILD out there. The ONLY way its gonna stop is when EVERYONE has had enough and realizes that GOD is the head and OBEYS him and once he is put first EVERYTHING else WILL fall into place. All you people can do now is PRAY! Judging others and tryna be involved ONLY gonna prolong justice and DESTROY our men.

  2. real is real says:

And where are the police???? Securing the marketplace grocery isles. SMH

    • Same S*** Different Day says:

What the Hell do you think the knew it was going to be a shooting there. Take you head out of your A**.

    • Oh well says:

Im so tired of people like you asking where the police are when these things happen? You think police can be everywhere at the same time? Market Place pays for off duty officers to work as extra duty EVERY Christmas! Dont blame this crap on the police. The shooters know when they are going to shoot.

    • EmptyPockets says:

And where should they be? Sitting in the front yard of every little gangsta and their baby momma? Then you’ll bitch and complain when the tribal warriors hold up the Marketplace like they did with Henry’s Pantry.

    • real is real says:

No my comment is focused to the point that instead of using Bda police in grocery stores hire security companies. ALSO send those same police out on the streets, patrolling, at least there is a better chance of catching the culprit or faster response time.

Its the holidays dammit they should be out hitting the streets i know they can not be everywhere shots are popped off but if out in patrol around the island as nuisances at least it would be a deterrent.

      • Mack says:

Yes, how ever, they are off duty officers basically working a second job and the grocery store is paying their wage….not the tax payer. See them in other stores too. Don’t be so shallow minded.

      • Arthur - Atlanta says:

You can put security personnel in the grocery store but they do not have the powers of arrest for shoplifters, and as someone already pointed out, the police in the grocery stores are in a sense, off duty working a second job.
You may want to work 24/7 but I don’t think with all of the madness going on in the street that police officers would agree with that thought of working 24/7 dealing with that madness around the clock and not getting a break from (what would be to them) the ‘norm’.
So if they can make a little extra money this time of year without worrying about getting shot…why not take a part time “safe” gig.

    • smh says:

The question should be, WHERE IS THE COMMUNITY!? Shaking MY head.

  3. No Sympathy.... says:

The reason for my name is quite simple …my take on this Crap is this …Don’t blame the Government…Don’t blame the Police, These Guys are YOUR sons, YOUR daughters,YOUR nephews, YOUR grandsons….DEAL with THEM NOW before they DIE…YES i have heard that some families are afraid of their own…WELL if you can not REEL them in ,to stop the MADDNESS….THEN POINT THE POLICE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION….GET Bermuda BACK (oh and for those of you who disagree with me ……..).

    • Upside-down says:

I agree real talk no sympathy…..

    • Anon says:

Well said. These ignorant parents need to quit protecting their sons — most of them are well aware of what their children are involved in. As you said, it may be impossible to “real” some of “them in,” in which case the police — and the public, I’m sure — would be much appreciative if they simply alterted CrimeStoppers.

    • OMG says:

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I am just so sick of this, wish we could round them all up and put them on an island and let the chips (bodies) fall were they may.

SICK AND TIRED OF BEING SICK AND TIRED………….and I really don’t care if some don’t like the tune of my reply.

    • Casi says:

“No Sympathy”, I totally agree with your opinion.

    • Skink says:

      Fantastic …….snuff said!!!!!

    • Not Again! says:

Total Agree with you No Sympathy; however some of these guys mothers are living the good like thanks to their son’s activities, why whould they want to stop it? I have read a number of articles where the mothers have said “I just don’t understand, my boy wasn’t in a gang or involved in drugs”. Well to those mothers who have said that, where did you new flat screen tv, or your new washer and dryer or your new car or whatever your son’s have gifted you with, where did the money come from? Last I heard, you didn’t get paid to sit on a wall or hang out on the streets. My parents couldn’t afford for me to go to college, but I have a job, I have started at the bottom and worked my way up. I’m not rich, and I don’t have letters after my name, but I make a honest day’s living. Is it easy? No, but it’s the right thing to do. We need to teach our children at a young age what right!!!

      • "Quelle surprise" says:

AMEN to that my friend! You speak the truth! And good for you for being in charge of your own future! You (and your parents!!) should be proud of what you’ve accomplished. You are a role model. Thank you!

    • united says:

Hear hear. Everybody talking but nobody sees the pink elephant in the room.

  4. Michael H Dunkley says:

    Amen!

  5. truth says:

They don’t wat they have done now!!..they shot the wrong person!!.smh!.now bermuda is goin see the evil!! [edited]

    • mixitup says:

Who’s “They” if you know then Report this information, no need to retaliate cause this makes you no better than them. Where did we learn that retaliation to the death is ok? I mean aren’t we a civilized society or are we Bush People?

  6. Crystal-clear says:

@Real is real – What exactly do you mean by your comment “securing the Marketplace Isles”? Are you serious?

    • Real is Real says:

Yes, i went to 2 grocery stores yesterday and saw 2 uniformed officers in each shop. Shopping Center victroria street and Modern Mart paget.

  7. Pitts Bay says:

Tis the season to be jolly
Tis the season to be…. …. shooting your neighbours.

History will look back at this period of time and correlate the celebration of Christmas with the number of shooting incidents that these A*#*$les are committing.

What a wonderful way to celebrate the Prince of Peace ! – Sickening

  8. Wise Up says:

@ No Sympathy…. well said be cause am just sick of them and their families untill it hits their homes.

  9. LMAWTFO says:

Sit back relax n enjoy the show cuz da sh!t na stop ah war ting dis its become everyday livin. You people always want to talk how we young black males are finish ya well if you parents would have did the right stuff when we wwas younger then it wouldn’t have to be this way we get more love in the street then at home smh

    • jredmond says:

haha..this is so ignorant it has to be satire. right?

    • Casi says:

You are responsible for your own actions. Don’t blame other people and try to pull the race card, it’s soooo boring. Every time you don’t have a solution, you pull this card. Take responsibility and set a good example.

    • Not Again! says:

R u serious? How can you hold other people responsible for your actions? Man up! Take responsibility and do the right thing.

    • Death to party politics says:

I’m curious to understand this mentality. How do you correlate love in the street with the shooting of your fellow man? After you’ve all shot each other, what’s next? Is this the sole purpose of your life, to inflict harm on each other? What happens at the end of it all, is your life going to be fulfilled because you put a bullet into the body of another person? That’s the legacy you want to leave this world with?

You’re smart enough to know that it doesn’t have to be this way. You said it yourself. So despite whatever kind of upbringing you had when you were younger, you still appear to have a concept of right and wrong. You KNOW this is wrong, so why are you doing it?

    • Richard says:

So what your saying is you became one these Coward because your parent or parents didn’t show you any love so you went to the streets where the guys where showing you much love hanging out when you want to nobody to tell you what to do (oh sorry but Boss your selling for) get to sleep where you want when you want hang out with your BOYs all day and night wrestling and slap boxing (lol like you would ever fight somebody one on one lol) getting all hot and sweaty then sit back and smoke some herbs man what a life. lol Dreama

  10. DAMN THEM TO HELL says:

ALL THESE FAKE A** PUNKS WHO DONT DO ANYTHING BUT DESTROY THIS ISLAND WILL HAVE THEIR SPECIAL PLACE IN HELL. DONT BE SURPRISED IF THIS IS A PLOT TO TRY AND GET INDEPENDANCE BECAUSE IF THIS IS, IT WOULD BE THE STUPIDIST THING THE WORTHLESS PLP GOVT HAS DONE. THESE POLITICIANS DONT CARE ABOUT BERMUDA NOR ITS PEOPLE. THEY R JUST AS HEARTLESS AND VILE AS THE P***IES THEY ALLOW OUT OF JAIL EARLY, THE SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM IS SO EVIDENT THAT EVEN A BLINDMAN WITH A BLINDFOLD ON COULD SEE IT! MAY GOD BLESS THIS COUNTRY AND ITS GOOD PEOPLE AND CURSE THE ONES WHO HAVE SOLD THEIR SOULS!!

    • Casi says:

I don’t think that this matter has anything to do with the independence of this island. If this island would go independent now, all the boys who fled to the UK to be “safe” would have to come back… and really Europe doesn’t need them either. They have their own share…

  11. truth says:

I kno the man that got shot is from a very notorious and unforgiven area!..[edited]

    • Anon says:

Why don’t you tell this to the police, and not to the general public on Bernews? I’m sure they would be more than appreciative of your information, if it is, as you claim, the ‘truth.’

      • ShootemUp says:

dis shxt needs to stop! you never no whose next! this island has turned to a battle field! fxck this shxt!

    • Let's Think About This... says:

@truth, you seem to know a heck of a lot of what’s going on. But will you tell the police so your brother/cousin/friend/ace boy isn’t next? Would make sense instead of making comments on Bernews.

  12. Islander says:

I’m in shock I grew up on east avenue, never would I think this nonsense but I guess no where is safe anymore !

    • Mack says:

It’s not about where you live, its about your neighbours….and this neighbour has a reputation built over years and years…

  13. Crystal-clear says:

Things are going to get much worse BERMUDA!!! All you idiots out there covering up for your “loved ones”, you better wake the hell up! But, no! As long as little Johnny is stealing or selling drugs to buy you your shiny cars and jewelry, you’re happy aren’t you? But when little Johnny dies from gun shot wounds or knife wounds, then you want to cry and say, “oh, he was such a good boy”, “he was such a good provider”! Bermuda, get your act together! Where and how are these guns getting here? SOMEONE KNOWS THE ANSWERS!

  14. Monte says:

That last comment was just absolutely ridiculous! These Children don’t realise that what they are doing is acting out. The damaging aspect of is that this acting out is affecting an entire Community, families, even the one they think they have on the Streets. These Children need to go to places like Haiti or the hoods of Jamaica or New York and see that these Children are “Wangstas” Wanna be Gangstas. How is it what you all Children are doing is going to benefit even your economical stature. Do you know what that means?

  15. truth says:

The information I kno has nuffin to do wit the shootin!.so plz don’t talk to me like um a dummy!!

    • Anon says:

… how does this information have nothing to do with the shooting? You claim that you “kno the man that got shot” is in a powerful position. Since when does the identity of the shooting victim have nothing to do with the shooting itself?

    • jredmond says:

but you are. your transcribed responses prove it.

      • jredmond says:

I know…I started a sentence with ‘but’ and didn’t capitalize. DOH!!

      • Skink says:

Well said……..understanding English Grammar from An English Teacher named Richard helps, eh??

        • Maddog says:

That how we are in Bermuda we are going to sit up and worry about grammar at a time like this, you two sound like Michael DUNKLEY you don’t have anything to say.

    • Real is Real says:

I agree with you truth, obviously we both in the streets in some sort of way, But Anon what we know every street person knows and popo know also, they know what ties the victim has with his “area” they also know with whom his “area” is at war with. This is just street knowledge. But truth ya right “they” definatly shot the wrong person. I have my vest for the holidays becuase him getting shot might as well say Armageddon has officially started.

      • dangerousMinds says:

Bermuda is juz gettin it!..all we have to do is pray!.and pray..and pray..and pray..and pray!!

    • fallinginlovewithjesus says:

      Good day readers:

I’ve never posted anything before in Bernews, but my heart aches when I read this article and posts and hear what is happening to our island of Bermuda.

@ Truth: you are absolutely correct. What we need to do is pray…pray and pray! We need to pray for the hearts and souls of all young men in our country. We need to pray for each and every family…those of the victims and those of the perpetrators. The mentality of the few committing these acts is distorted. I cannot understand why they are engaging in this violence, but what I do know is that our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ is the only one with the answer. Things are bad…yes! We all know this! They have gotten worst, but there is hope for this country and that is what we have to hold onto.

Despite how the community looks when there is hope and when we speak life into this country our present circumstance will change and it will turn around for the better. Each and every one of us have to believe and speak positivity to our children and loved ones.

As a former Police Officer and now as a civilian, I’ve seen how families have been torn, but that is no excuse for this violence. The mind and heart of a person has to chance and that only comes through the acceptance of Jesus Christ as your personal saviour. I know that many readers may be of diverse faiths, but it is only through Christ that life and life more abundantly is given. That abundance gives hope and will give peace to this country.

As it has already been reiterated in previous posts…those with information need to provide what they know to the Police. We need to come together as one with courage and provide the Police with pertinent information they need to be successful with their investigations. If you prefer to be anonymous to protect your identity…then do so!

The Police are not able to be everywhere at every minute. The presence of the Police has diminished over the years because the Service does not have the manpower it once did. However, any information that one may think is immaterial can have a significant impact on any investigation past or present.

I pray that each and every one of us can love our neighbours, love our families and respect each other.

Wishing each and everyone of you a save and happy Merry Christmas. Some may not have gifts to give to their loved ones, but that doesn’t matter. Remember that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ and it is with his birth that we are given grace and eternal life. One of the best gifts that can be given is love, kindess, joy, forgiveness, peace of mind, good health, and hope.

      Merry Christmas and God Bless!!!

maybe it’s time for the government to invest in some more CCTV! I realise in residential areas people may feel their privacy is being invaded but given the rate of shootings at the moment its a small price to pay for hopefully reducing this…plus perhaps would help get the police’s act together

  23. Tee says:

Bda is the size of a County in America. A damn county, can you believe that. Man this is very pathetic. A County. Avery small County at that. How the hell are you gonna give criminals jail time and let them out with hardly no time served. The island is very, very very too small for that.
The problem can be solved in BDA if Government got their head from their ars and started to do the right thing, First of all move your damn Headqueaters from Parkside area, That’ll be a real pleasurable start, Step outside all your criminal buddies are their greeting you every damn day. We need a new Party in charge(And I am black, no expat here either) We need to give the cops all the power to run these idiots to the ground and when found with guns and weapons give them the damn book, for murder comes from guns or knives give them the electric chair or hanging, their choice . Too many scared leaders, We need someone with balls and a stand up. Not a leader that is 4 ft tall and acts it. We are sinking. Bring in all Marines from US and get this crap off the streets, I said Marines because they ARE NOT SCARED. Bermuda Regiment not ready, thats their boys too. Police are doing their best but when you get a Government that will not even take a pay cut to help out, Why vote them back in, Wake up PLP (POOR LEADING PEOPLE)

  24. Triangle Drifter says:

When was the last time the Minister resonsible for security was heard from?

The silence is deafening. Oh well what can we expect? We have a soft on crime Government with a politically appointed Attourney General giving direction to judges who give lenient sentences which are then cut even further by a lenient politically appointed parole board which does not liase with the judicary or BPS so in no time at all the thugs are back on the street.

Even 10 years ago who would have thought Bermuda would be where it is today, a model third world island?

You keep voting for it, you will keep getting it.

    Chaos from the top down.

Time to move to Afganistan or Somalia. It is safer there.

  25. awake from slumber! says:

Hosea 4:6 My ppl are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge(of ME), I have rejected you from being a priest to me(priest had the privilege of entering the presence of God and HE would hear their prayers for the ppl as well as for themselves). And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.

Well ask yourself if ya family is innocent in all this, nobody gets shot for no reason, sorry the kid had to witness this horrific scene hope you all get him some counseling. And maybe your fam can see how easily his kid could have been shot and killed. Is this the life they want for their children

    • Sick N Tired says:

@War: I hear your pain and I hear your anger . . . but STOP for one minute and think . . . yes this young man’s child is going to be sccarred which will require counselling, however he/she still has his/her father to teach him about choices and consequences and why this happened in order to avert his child from also becoming a victim in the future.

Launching an all out war will have devastating effects on ALL . . . including your fams child . . . what if:
      1. His/her daddy gets shot again in all the mahem and dies this time, now he has no father AT ALL.
      2. What about all of you alls other chilkdren if anyone of you or whomever is launching an attack, become victims . . . what about your kids?????
      3. And if whoever launches war gets caught, what about their children who will not have their father to raise them????

As angry and hurt as you may be STOP N THINK first please!!!!!!! Your fam and kids need ALL of you young black men!!!!!!!!!!!

Scary to think that 10 years ago, we as a community would have never thought we would reach this point. We now need to get back to basics. Our kids need more consistent discipline. They need better education that will allow them more opportunities then slinging can provide. They need first though to be introduced to God. Our kids need to know that there is more to life then the here and now. We as a community need to stop turning a blind eye when we see kids acting out and need to now take a proactive role in the lives of Bermuda’s young people. Man we need you. Female are great but young boys need to see positive Male role models they can emulate if we have a hope of stopping this. So Bermuda please wake up, stand up and get involve some way some how

  30. if you say so says:

You people and your cameras lol fyi there are Cameras at South roundabout that didnt stop a shooting and so far nobody has been charged for that one. There cameras up 42nd there are still shootings up there. Hell in Somerset a man was shot right underneath a camera and he had 2 trials before he was convicted. So its quite obvious that cameras are not a deterrent nor the solution. Stop thinking these guys actually care about any messures put in place to fight them. The last few convictions have all have netted over 30years in jail but they continue to shoot so you think a few more cameras are going to make a difference? These fools dont care about anyone or anything. You can put cameras up from the tip of Dockyard on every pole to St. georges and guess what you’ll still have shootings.

    • Jamudian says:

“If you say so” I respectfully disagree.
Hypothetically if we did have CCTV cameras on every pole(not likely) but every major intersections, round-a-bouts, bridges, juctions streets and lanes. Alot more culprits would easily be apprehended!! Similar to what the do in London, Engalnd and alot of other places. You would think that being a British coloney and having a british Govenor who is directly incharge of our national security; that would have been one of the major suggestions on the table.
These are dire situations and drastic measures need to be taken!! These cameras have facial recognition, can track said vehicle from camera to camera–narrowing the final destination of the said culprit. This could and would work and should be put forward. What will it take.??????

      • GPS says:

        CO-SIGN!!!!!!!

      • Real is Real says:

Jamudian i agree 100% i dont care if it on every pole, matter of fact i will flash it a few times just to keep the person monitoring awake lol.

oh forgot they not monitored :(

  31. Blame says:

What’s interesting is that many readers blame everyone but the guilty parties when things like this happen. It’s either the fault of the police for not being there at the time and location of the incident; the fault of the Parole Board for letting the thugs out in the first place; the fault of the mommas and the girlfurnds for raising and protecting the thugs (not a huge stretch, admittedly…), but what about the person who ultimately pulls the trigger…? They are the ones with whom we should really be disgusted and blaming! I wish these folks understood and appreciated the value of human life, and really it’s our job as other human beings to teach that to them and one another. I have not given up hope but I certainly am concerned and thinking of how I can affect positive change in all this rather than only place blame. The latter is way too easy.

Idle minds are the devil’s playground. Idle politicians use the playground “.

Politicians failure to lead by example and denounce violence is a contributing factor to this gang plague in Bermuda.

The eWart Brown era was a quintessential period for ” raising popular expectations and not fulfilling them “.The eWart era political style was very similar to Walter Rodney, a Guyanese university professor and Black Power movement advocate was banned from Jamaica in October 1968. Both where living in Jamaica during the same period,
The political disorder and rising crime caused the Manley government to declare a state of emergency that remained in effect until June 1977.

We have this generation of ” self entitled, spoiled black youth ” in Bermuda encouraged by
    my black brothers and sisters.

The terror perpetrated by these gangs, which all too often occurs on the streets of Bermuda.

TREAT THEM LIKE TERRORIST ! At this moment , they are killing each other. Wait until they become organized, than the real challenge starts. Any one with the basis knowledge of gangs will realize the effect organization will have on the Bermuda Community.

Wayne Perinchief appears to have been a ” feel good, political trip to Boston”. You have to hit the streets. This current generation of thugs will ” kill themselves” it’s the future generation, he should be focusing on .

I dislike ” banging” my fellow black Bermudians in politics but come on guys. Your silence on the numerous financial, social and basic values issues are deafening,

    • David Henry says:

By now, America has spent *billions* of dollars on the War on Drugs… and it’s a complete failure. I don’t think our government throwing money at our gang issue is going to solve the problem. It has to be treated at the source. In my opinion, there’s a lot of Bermudian women out there who need to obtain more self esteem/worth/respect, and stop opening their legs to every dead beat male who shows them the time of day. That’s how you end up with four kids from four different “fathers”… none of whom are in the picture. It should be no wonder why these young bloods–with no strong, positive male role models in their lives–go off and carry on like this. If we fail to recognize the underlying issue, and this cycle is not stopped at the source, I’d be willing to bet that many moons from now, we will be reading articles on Bernews just like this, and reading comments about how it’s the police’s/government’s/teacher’s fault!

  37. Fools says:

LISTEN up Bermuda. The guys that are performing these crimes come from a small area. The police know who the members are.

      • Fools says:

Terry go back and drink the Milk Mans milk.

You have no freaking clue of what’s going on in the Island. Most of the groups or gangs in Bermuda that the people on the street speak about are not committing any violent crimes, but are selling weed like you old Bermuda 6 years ago.

That is a crime, but I rather have the lesser of the 2 evils!

As silly as that sounds I rather have them selling weed then causing all this shooting like the Members of Park Side. Where have you been for the last 2 years fool.

Their is a War that’s going on and I’m tired of all this pu$$y fOOtInG around. Yes I say bring it, these guys need to fear the rest of the community. Instead their running the streets and got people scared out of their minds.

I guess you think different when one of their members aims a gun @ your friend or worst your house.

You wrote that your time is limited to nonsense? HAVE YOU READ ALL THE BS YOU HAVE WRITTEN ON BERNEWS SINCE THEY OPEN THIS WEBSITE.

Anyway it’s Christmas and my friend I wish you a Merry Christmas, instead of bashing each other, you, me and the rest of the community need to let the police have a free for all on these punks like the police do down in the Islands.

The next time the police beat on their a$$ and they report it. We all should say you must have fell on your way to the police station.

        • Terry says:

Never mind fool. Your comments don’t make sense and are directed at me, not the problem.

          “selling weed”.

You hit the nail on the head. Fathom what you wrote. I sell bannannas for 20cents each, you sell them for 19, the guy up the road grows them and sells then for 30 cents………………………

          Merry Christmas.

It aint been shootings n killings up somerset that police have labeled publicly being linked 2 a M.O.B gun ? All through the case of the bie for shooting randy lightbourne. Wat u telling me parkside going up west n borrowing there guns ? The police for the longest kept telling the punlic its only a few guns here. Well jus look at what’s been recovered over the past 2 years or so alone. This problem is a lot larger than anyone of us know or are willing to admit. N if u only think 1 or 2 hoods have them well I feel sorry for u cause u definately living in la la land.

  41. junior burchall says:

    Riddle me this, Fam….

Why is it that all of the victims who have lost their lives to gun violence (since April 27th 2003, when Shaundae Jones was gunned down in Dockyard) are BLACK males?

Why is it that all of the shooters are BLACK males?

If we are all in agreement that

    1) the past has little to no bearing on the present;

    2) they (Black males) have equal access to quality – albeit criminally Eurocentric – education (if only they’d focus themselves on academics); and

    3) whining about race and racism (the ‘whitey made me do it!’ defence), in an island that has been led for over a decade by a Black government, is nothing more than sour grapes on the part of the chronically lazy, inadequately parented and intellectually underprivileged, then might it not follow that

    4) something is (genetically) wrong with young, Black males…and by extension, Black people (after all, these shooters weren’t born in a vacuum)?

…and if my conclusion is faulty, how, then, do we explain why Bermuda is beginning to resemble – in terms of homicidal, gun-related violence – other places where Black people are present in significant numbers (Toronto, St. Vincent, Jamaica, Bahamas, Anyghetto U.S.A., Brixton, etc.)?

  42. tricks are for kids..... says:

I see a lot of ideas, but no real solutions…..CCTV can work..but it is not the answer if they are not turned on, operational, or manned 24/7.

I know the young man that was shot and I know his family very well. And yes he was trying to turn his life around and even lost a couple of so called friends along the way..yes he might have had a bad past and did things that he is not proud of. Should his past be held against him for the rest of his life? How many of you that have posted live or have lived “squeaky clean” lives..if you answer yes, than you can’t even be truthful with yourself.

Did he deserve to be shot? NO HE DIDN’T..I don’t care what he may or may not have done…..

Out of all that have posted how many of you have really listend to what our young men have to say? I don’t mean hearing them I mean really listened? How many of you have talked “to them” and not “at them” or talked “down to them”. I know I have sat andtalked WITH them..because in my profession I work with Behavior problem children everyday..I have done mediations with students “who roll” with PSC, ORC, MOB, 42 and their stories would leave you breathless! Just know that with every one that is “taken out” or “taken off” the streets there are 2 or 3 ready and willing to fill their shoes.
The parents are not always to blame, yes there may be a handful that know what their chidren are doing but not all do….sitting down in group sessions and having discussions with these young men are real eye openers..our young men are really hurting..when you hear an eleven year old say that he is not going to get a job or he is ghetto because he is black and that’s how it is and how they’ve been called dumb asses at school or they’re in the dumb class. they feel nothing but hopelessness and defeat and nothing can convince him otherwise it really tugs at your heart..A lot of them see nothing in their future and it is really sad.

In forums such as this there is always finger pointing….we want to blame the parents, we want to blame the police, we want to blame government and the list goes on and on…I challenge each of you that want to see a change (man especially) volunteer your lunch hour and go to one of the schools and see if you can become a mentor to any of our young men that are deemed “at risk”..put your time where your mouth is instead of going back and forth with each other because you don’t like or agree with each others comments…put your time where it will count and make a difference

That’s your solution? I take it your comment is in general and not directed at me…….and you as well shameful..is that your solution?

So what is your solution for those that have gone array that come from two parent homes? Not all those that cause problemas are born out of wedlock…..Remember I work with Behavior problem children and some of them from two parent homes stories are just as enlightening……

We need to find a viable solution that would work for now and the future we can’t go back in time and “send the children back”

        • David Henry says:

          @ tricks are for kids…..

All “barracuda” said was “Stop having children that you cannot support !”. Now, none of us are perfect, but that’s really good advice, no? Not only for would be/single parents, but also for two family households who would not be able to support their offspring due to some underlying issue/s. Maybe they aren’t financially or emotionally stable. Maybe they just would not have the time to spend with their children to teach and dicipline, to help them with their homework, or their self esteem, or tell them they are not dumb asses or ghetto. People need to think first and be honest with themselves and their partner before deciding to bring children into this world.

Personally, I think this gang/gun problem has been brewing for a generation, and will take AT LEAST a generation to resolve. I also believe the solution must start from where the child’s life starts… in the home.

You’re right though when you say, we can not send the children (already born and raised to some degree) back. I respect that you spend your time volunteering with, and listening to these “at risk” youths. Now I’m not saying that what you do doesn’t make a difference, but I think you’d agree when I say there’s no sign of this gang/gun problem abating. So, in light of that, I’m curious, what are some of *your solutions* to this problem?

          • tricks are for kids..... says:

Mr. Henry, If Only one could look into the future and see what it holds..One could plan and prepare, have it together financially and emotionally and ALL that can change in an instant…nothing in life is guaranteed.

I may not have all the answers and I’m sure no one person does.It is going to take a collaborative effort to get the ball rolling…some of the thoughts I have are as follows:

1.) Male mentors are needed first and foremost, hence the mention of giving up sometime during lunch in my firt posting.
2.) Some of us need to stop burying our heads in the sand and appreciate and accept the fact that Society is to blame for some (not al) of the problems that are plaguing our island.
3.) When we offer a programme (ie counselling, youth mentoring, etc,) we have to remain consistent. Many groups have been formed since the violence on Island began to spiral out of control, but where are they?…they only seem to ‘Pop out of the woodwork” when something happens when in fact they should be ongoing.
4.)Police Liasion Officers need to be placed back in ALL schools. I found the Officer to be very effective ans letters to express this have been written to the Commissioner of Police but to no avail.
5.) Our young men (because I refuse to call them gang bangers or thugs) have voices, they need to be listened to. They need to be heard..we might not like what they have to say but it has to be said.
6.) We need to stop pointing fingers at one another and shutting each other down(take the bantering back and forth on this site if you have an idea that someone doesn’t agree with)
7.) Rome was not built in a day so it is ludicrous to think that our problems are going to be fixed overnight.
8.) And the biggest solution of all (and the one most hide from) is that we need to get rid of the CORRUPTION and as long as there is corruption we will always have this problem.

            • David Henry says:

You have some very good ideas. Did they really stop doing #4? Pretty sure we had a cop visit on more than one occasion, and I was in school not too too long ago.

#8 is also huge. You have to wonder how guns are getting on the island in the first place. Mind you, I feel like it’s easier to get a gun past customs than it is a gram of weed these days! Didn’t they recently stop a tourist with a gun on his way OUT of the country?? They might want to install a metal detector just as you’re about the exit the arrivals building at the airport.

Regarding #1 (fittingly #1), and #3. In your opinion, what are some of the more consistent, established, and well conected youth councilling and mentor programs on the island? I’m moving back in the near future and would like to get involved.

              • tricks are for kids..... says:

School Liasion Officers have been removed for quite a while (at least 3 years now). Each school used to have a specific officer assigned to their school. However, it was reduced to One Officer servicing 3 or more schools. They now have something Called the Community Action Team (CAT) but their visits are few and far between.

The Programme that is used most in the Middle School (level at which I am employed) is Youth Net wherein Teen Mentors come in during the lunch period and mingle with the students. There are also adult Mentors from various companies that come during the lunch period as well.

Family Centre has a great Programme and Big Brothers and Sisters are always calling for volunteers as well.

                • David Henry says:

It’s too bad about the infrequent visits by the police and/or CAT. I’ve been out of high school now for over 10 years so that has changed.

Thanks for providing additional info about the mentoring programs.

        • barracuda says:

My comment was not directed at you personally.I agree with you , sometimes you do your best and they go astray, but there are a lot of men and boys out there spreading their seed because they think it makes them men. I dont know what the solution is for the children already out there , I am trying to make ends meet and do right for the one boy I have. He could go astray yes, but I know his mother and I have done the best we could for him. A lot of guys out there cannot say the same.
