Chewstick Film Festival Schedule

The Chewstick Foundation — holding its first annual Bakatown Film Festival from today [Jan. 26] until Saturday — unveiled the full line-up of movies and events.

Showcasing local short films alongside award winning international shorts, the festival will celebrate yet another facet of the storytelling traditions Chewstick emphasises as well as Bermudian talent.

“This will also be a showcase of the Bakatown area and the cultural hub that is developing,” said a Chewstick spokesman. “Your support in attending and your assistance in getting the word out would be greatly appreciated.

“We look forward to seeing you at this inaugural event and will definitely be a memorable experience.”

Thursday and Friday events are free and the Saturday event is $30, tickets can be purchased at Liberty Theatre’s box office, online at premiertickets.bm o by calling The Chewstick Foundation office.

Event: Bakatown Film Festival Day I – Local Shorts & Panel Discussion
Location: Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge & Cafe’
Description: This free, exciting and informative event will showcase the submissions in the 2012 Bakatown Short Film Festival. The following films will be shown: “Faeries of Green Lochan” by Scott Neil/”Melanin Man” [Live Wires Music Video] by Dana Zhyon Selassie /”FABRIC – History of the Portuguese in Bermuda/Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres Festa Bermuda 2011″ by Milton Raposo  ”Rise Up” [Bento Music Video] by Asha Ludwig/”The African Connection: Memoirs Of Our Journey Home” by Dana Zhyon Selassie.

After the showing of the films there will be a roundtable discussion with local filmmakers: Al Seymour – Film/TV/Animation; Milton Raposo – Film/TV/Commercial; and Donald [Detrimental] Robinson – Music Video, Asha Ludwig – Film/TV.

Event: Bakatown Short Film Festival Day II – Local Music Video Party
Location: Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge & Cafe’
Description: This free, unique and exciting event will showcase local artists and music video filmmakers in a celebration of music video filmmaking. The entire party will be entertained via video DJ with local music videos being projected 12ft x 8ft on the new screen at The Chewstick Lounge. The Music Video Launch party will feature music videos from artists such as:

Twanee’ Butterfield, Prof-A-C, Kombat, Propa, Jelani, Fiyah Marshall, Mz Malz, Haz … all the way up to international local artists like Heather Nova, Collie Buddz, Mishka and many more!!

Event: Bakatown Short Film Festival Day III – Future Shorts Screening
Location: Liberty Theatre
Description: The main event for the Bakatown Short Film Festival will begin with an opening reception from 6pm in the Liberty Theatre Lobby and will feature a selection of local performers, cocktails and refreshments for sale and a chance to mingle with fellow film enthusiasts. At 7pm the Future Shorts series will start in the main theatre.

The collection is a series of short films that range from six-20 minutes and display genres from real life dramas to stop-motion, and animation. Each international film has received industry awards and the collection boasts winners from The Oscars, SXSW, BAFTA and the Sundance Film Festival to name a few.

There will also be screening Al Seymour’s 1970s Kung Fu hit, “Crimson & Gold”. This will be the first time “Crimson and Gold” will be shown in a large theatre setting and will be an epic occasion for local film and the celebration of Bermuda’s story. The screening will end at about 9pm and will be followed by a wrap party at The Chewstick Lounge. Snacks and refreshments will be available.
