PLP Confirm Lt Col Burch As Candidate

January 12, 2012

[Updated with video] This morning [Jan.12] the Progressive Labour Party held a press conference at the Lorraine Rest Home in Warwick, and confirmed that Lt. Col David Burch will represent them in Constituency #27 Warwick North Central.

Warwick North Central is presently held by the PLP’s Elvin James, who won with 56.14% [535-418] of the vote against the United Bermuda Party’s R. Wayne Scott in 2007. The One Bermuda Alliance previously announced that R. Wayne Scott will contest the seat again for the Opposition.

Lt. Col. Burch has served in Cabinet in before, stepping down from both his Cabinet and Senate position in April of last year. Prior to his resignation, Lt. Col. Burch held the position of Minister of National Security and Government Senate Leader. He previously held the portfolios of Labour, Immigration and Public Safety; and Works and Engineering and Housing.

He attended West End Primary School, Southampton Glebe School, Sandy’s Secondary School and two of Britain’s best military schools; The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, and The School of Infantry, Warminster.

Lt. Col. Burch served as Commanding Officer of The Bermuda Regiment, and retired after 20 years of military service. He was awarded the Efficiency Decoration in 1990 for outstanding military service, and the First Clasp in 1996.

He was honoured for his military service by Her Majesty, The Queen in the 1998 Queen’s Birthday Honours, being awarded the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Military Division. He also has an extensive background in underwriting property and casualty risks, having spent 20 years in the International Company sector as a Reinsurance Underwriting Manager.

Candidates the PLP have confirmed thus far include Sen. Diallo Rabain in Hamilton South Constituency #7, Linda Merritt in Smith’s South Constituency #8, Vance Campbell in Smith’s West Constituency #9, Neville Tyrrell in Devonshire East Constituency #11, Walton Brown in Pembroke Central Constituency #17, Sen. Vincent Ingham in Pembroke West Constituency #19, Darius Tucker in Paget West Constituency #23, Lawrence Scott in Warwick South East Constituency #24, Sen. Jonathan Smith in Warwick West #28, Stephen Todd in Southampton East Central Constituency #30, and Sen. Kim Wilson in Sandys SoutH Central Constituency #34.

Other candidates not yet confirmed — but selected in Branch Meetings — include Sen. David Burt, Dennis Lister, Randy Horton, Scott Simmons, Minister Zane DeSilva, Minister Wayne Furbert, Rolfe Commissiong, John Gibbons and Dame Jennifer Smith.

Update 1.02pm: Lt. Col. Burch’s full remarks are below:

Good morning and thank you Premier for the kind remarks.

Let me first thank members of Cabinet, family, friends and members of constituency 27 branch for being here today.

I also wish to thank the Member of Parliament for Constituency 27, Mr. El James – I think it was “the Voice of Summer” who always referred to him as “Big El James”; and he is right. I am honoured to follow him in vying for the trust of the people of Warwick North Central and I know – his are big shoes to fill.

The Progressive Labour Party is a grassroots, people’s Party and our Branches are full of dedicated men and women who do much of the leg-work in constituencies while we as candidates sometimes are required to do other things.

The Warwick North Central Branch is a perfect example of that dedication and commitment. I am humbled by their vote of confidence and by the warmth of the welcome they have extended to me as their candidate.

From the moment I was successful in the primary, I have been in the wider community getting to know the people I hope to represent. Without exception, people have been open, honest and frank inexpressing their concerns and in most cases their support for me and for our Government. These are challenging times for all of us and the constituency’s issues are similar to those we hear and read about nationally.

I have committed that the hard work and results for which I am known will be the way I shall serve them. I have always been available to serve wherever needed and devote my 100% effort to the task. My candidacy in constituency 27 will be no different. I remain firmly of the view that the ideals, core values and vision of the Progressive Labour Party provide what is best for Bermuda.

The Premier has assembled a team of diverse talent, strengths and backgrounds and I am committed to doing my part to work on behalf of our fellow citizens. I am not waiting for an election to be called to get to work, I will continue to be on the doorstep, connecting with the people and providing them with the best representation I can offer.

Thank you

  1. PLP ALL THE WAY says:

Great Selection PLP. Colonel will take the seat back for the PLP.

I anticipate the usual hate from the UBP bloggers, but don’t forget Col is a well liked figure who gets things done.

    Congrats!

    • sigh says:

PLP ALL the way, I agree with you, but remember the PLP currently holds this seat. Colonel doesn’t need to take it back.

      • PEPPER says:

.I am so sick of people saying that this Man “gets things done ” the only thing he got done was to piss off the International Business….

      • Yup says:

PLP all the way!! Col. Burch will put people in their place!!

    • Paula Cox's Orange Pippin says:

Hmm, not sure about that. 20 years in a Reinsurance Company, yet he hates ex-pats and foreign business generally. He is the most polarized politician on the island, and many not only don’t like him, but really dislike him. I also have an issue with those ridiculous earrings. Grow up man!

      • Friendly Faces says:

Agreed – how is this progress PLP? Peace and love, not hate, hate, hate Mr Burch.

      • Cleancut says:

Col. Burch will be able to achieve just as much damaged to this country again in the back benches. Then, well you know what his mission is!

        • PEPPER says:

I agree with you . and we all know what his mission is.. but does Paula ?

          • Cleancut says:

Yes, she does, she looked powerless at the presentation of Burch, i have lost total faith in her now. Her true colors have finally surfaced. We all know now that she knew everything that went on while Brown was in office. At first i thought she was protecting the PLP, BUT SHE WAS PROTECTING HERSELF! This little old lady that tries to speak so eloquently is a FAKE!

      • PEPPER says:

I agree with you.. but stay tuned ” the Col, and Everest Dacosta are buddies ???????? so the Col will be on his show in the near future !!! to promote his agenda. I also hate his earings…..

      • LOL (original) says:

Yes he did I’ve seen his signature on plenty of documents…………..

        LOL

    • Truth (Original) says:

I hope that one day you will grow to understand that not everyone who offers constructive criticism of this Government is a “UBP Blogger” offering hate speech. Some are disgruntled PLP supporters, some are BDA supporters and some are UBP supporters.

As a point of clarification, when you say the “Colonel will take the seat back for the PLP”, who is he taking the seat back from? I thought the PLP already held this seat?

      • Death to party politics says:

And some aren’t supporters of any political party. Only the small-minded rush to the conclusion that if you’re critical of the Government, then you MUST be a UBP/OBA supporter.

        • Death to party politics says:

Also, isn’t this the same guy who said he laughed when he saw all the ‘for sign’ sales on homes? Is there ANY critical thinking on this island? Seriously….

  2. Razor Ramon says:

Well liked figure? The man literally despises expats and pretty much all foreigners. Thank God I’m heading for greener pastures in a couple months.

    • sigh says:

Haha – razor ramon – like you have any credibility. You have something negative to say on virtually every site. Yesterday on RG you even were negative about the Amazing Race competition. Take a break.

    • Ole says:

      Why wait?

      • Gillian Anderson says:

What you mean leave now and take the money you would spend over the next two months with you? What a narrow minded view – if everyone that could left, where would Bermuda be?

Razor – good luck to you and your family, sorry you felt this was your best option

    • Errin Butterfield says:

Bye do you want a window or aisle seat?

  3. My two cents says:

Yes he has done such a good job. So good that all the asinine rules are made are now being reversed. Wonder how much time/money was wasted on making stupid petty rules that further lead to the demise of Bermuda. He gets things done alright, things that are damaging and irreversible. It amazes me that people continue to support politicians that are destroying the island. What are they feeding you guys? If Dr. Brown were to return to Bermuda politics no doubt he would be welcomed with open arms by many even though he is responsible for the spending spree that got us in this big mess. It’s as if some are incapable of thinking a tiny step further than personal emotion. Strange and approaching twilight zone.

    • joonya says:

      WELL SAID!

    • PEPPER says:

I agre with you, and to think that the premier of the island was so happy to have this idiot…. to be a part of her Government !!!!!!! all I can think of she desperate…

  4. star man says:

“… Col is a well liked figure who gets things done.” BWAA-HA-HA-Ha-Ha-Ha!!

  5. joonya says:

This angry man should stay away from politics and anything to do with my country’s future! Appropriate location here…. Give it a ‘rest’ Burch.

  6. sigh says:

Colonel Burch should be able to win this area with hard work and dedication. The general public know that the PLP are the better choice and will vote accordingly. I am convinced of this. Perfect no, but definitely the better choice.

    • Same S*** Different Day says:

The general public knows that PLP is full of hot air!!

    • Death to party politics says:

      Define ‘better’ for me.

  7. Thumbs Up says:

Maybe there is some hope for this Government!

Besides the whole foreign haterd topic. I agree slightly with that statement. Bermudians are finally starthing to wake up about foreigners and expats. The moment they all began to leave, no one could rent thier apartments and they were the ones bringing in extra income to this island along with taking care of the jobs the “lazy bermudian” doesn’t want to do.

Hopefully he’s had a change of heart.

  8. Bewildered says:

Lt. Col Burch certainly gets things done! He has reduced the number of expats, which has driven down rents, and in fact allowed a large pool of vacant properties to emerge. This has helped reduce the price of houses allowing prspective buyers, if there are, much more time to look, and choose. A great choice to show the PLP has not changed and it is business as usual.

  9. Triangle Drifter says:

The way the PLP flag is stuck to the table says alot about the PLP today.

Held together with duct tape. No idea of a permanent. No new faces. No fresh ideas.

Burch again??? What happened to doing things differently? More fluffy words. How many more IBs are packing theor bags today? How many more PLP supporting landlords with mortgages to pay, will get notices to vacate?

Yay PLP! Vote yourselves into finacial slavery.

  10. star man says:

“The general public know that the PLP are the better choice and will vote accordingly.”

    Have you done a survey…?

  11. nelly says:

This Clown shouldn’t even be allowed back.

  12. Yawn says:

    Politics Yawn. Candidate Announcements Yawn.

  13. Gillian Anderson says:

    Oh dear

  14. Paul Clinton says:

Hey, TD, there’s a sight more duct tape holding this Island together today than at ANY TIME prior
to 1998 and NONE can argue the toss!!!!!

  15. Terry says:

    Don’t ask…….Don’t tell.

It’s a PLP stronghold. Hell..they could put up Joe Smoe…..Party politics at it’s best. Someone ows someone a big favor.

  16. specialgirl4you says:

    Congratulations Col Burch,
I know you will continue to work hard, in the best interest of all Bermudians. The job will not be easy, but as you know it takes hard work to gain success. Stay focus on the task ahead, and push forward.

  17. NOTE TO RETAILERS: PLACE URGENT, IMMEDIATE ORDER FOR LARGE QUANTITIES OF “PLP GREEN” T-SHIRTS, SWEAT-SHIRTS, POLOS, SWEATERS, JACKETS, RAINCOATS, TIES, BELTS, HATS, GLOVES, FLEECES, SHORTS, SUITS, SOCKS, PANTS, SKIRTS, CAPRIS, TANK TOPS, JEANS, JEWELLERY, HANDBAGS, SCARVES, SHADES, SHOES, WIFE-BEATERS, THONGS, BRAS, BANDANAS, COFFEE MUGS, PENS, ETC.

  18. Mad Dawg says:

It’s a bit ironic that this comes the day after Cox announced the rules for 10-year work permits and PRC’s for some expat employers. She is desperately trying to undo the mess he created with his term limits and perpetual hissy-fit against IB.

She should get some more ex-UBP people.

  19. Makai Dickerson says:

Congrats Col. Burch!!!! One thing is certain you work hard at anything you do and the people of C27 will see their concerns addressed and the work done on their behalf.

    • PEPPER says:

Ya right !!!the Col works hard !!!the Col rides around on a bike …this old man needs a car…and you people of C27 who think he will address your concerns need to seek some sort of medical help…but Zane is the minister of health, so maybe he can help you idiots.

    • Familiar says:

I won’t deny the Burch does work hard at what he does, but if 27 actually wants someone who cares about their concerns, they should maybe look towards the candidate who’s been there and worked hard for the area for years. Just saying.

  20. MinorMatters says:

“God save our Gracious Queen…” Thank God for that UK Passport, I suspect it will come in handy.

    • Ole says:

Yes your absence from our shores would be something to thank both God and the queen..

    • Family Man says:

Glad to see you were referring to passports. Thought you’d burst into song for a second there.

  21. cocoa says:

I like to Col. he has a no nonsense approach and gets things done.

  22. Serious Though says:

    welcome back Col. Burch!

let’s get back to work! The next minister for National security!

    • PEPPER says:

God help us if he is the next minister for national security !!!! did the col and the former premier bring in four uninvited guest to the Island with out approval from the british gov ?
Paula, what the hell are you thinking ? at this point I wonder who is really running the Island !!! think about it.. here we have all of the former premiers buddies selected to be candidates !!!

      • star man says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Ewart Brown was put up as a Candidate. He IS obviously still pulling the strings.

  23. all clogged up says:

no wonder…..it really isn’t ya know?

  24. Time to take off your hoods OBA says:

Thanks Col. Burch for working hard for “you people as they put it”. The UBP/OBA never worried about your average black man in this country. Now they change their name to the OBA and all the white people jump to the other side in 24 hours. WTF was that about, now they say they have changed. Change the color of their clan hoods!

Then they say that the PLP doesn’t make them feel welcome. When have they ever really wanted to help us. Cupmatch the only whites you see up or down the field are the ones here on vacation.

We all know their leader is not in charge. Dunkley and Gibbons run that party. Bob and there new leader are only puppets.

    • Concerned says:

Oh My Goodness..you sound so ignorant! So as long as the PLP are “the black mens party” you will vote for them no matter how bad they mess things up for your island? WOW! Thats crazy and scary! Do you know how far in debt your country is and without international business and tourist you will become a Third World country. “Your Government” doensn’t seem to be concerned with neither Tourism, International Business or Crime! God Bless you Bermuda! As long as you have small minded people continuing to vote for the PLP you will find yourselves by yourselves!! Lord have mercy!

      • Gillian Anderson says:

        Well said

      • The truth hurts. says:

So please tell the rest of Bermuda why all the whites jump ship from the UBP to the OBA in 10 hours. Lets be honest about their intentions of misleading leading the blacks in Bermuda.

Misleading – designed to deceive or mislead either deliberately or inadvertently; “the deceptive calm in the eye of the storm”; giving the wrong idea or impression.

        Stop hiding behind the truth!

This person is to the point. Stop hating on the truth.

        • Tired of nonsense says:

Where did you expect them to go or support?

A party filled with stalwarts, members, MPs and Senators that don’t even think twice about spewing some negative racial rhetoric at them at any opportunity.

And it wasn’t all whites, but a vast majority.

          • The truth hurts. says:

            @ Tired of nonsense

That’s not a clear answer. All I ask is the truth friend!

            • star man says:

You don’t like his opinion, so you claim that his answer was not a clear answer. Not the truth. An opinion is not the truth.

              Here’s the deal simplified. Again.

White folks do not feel welcomed by the PLP as a result of the Party’s attitude toward them over the years… which has been, quite frankly, RACIST! You lot have become what you were fighting against in the beginning. Congratulations, you have replaced a white elite (UBP) with a black elite (PLP/BIU). And you know how blacks treat their own….

        • Concerned says:

OK….”the truth hurts”….Continue to vote PLP and come back to me 5 years from now. We will discuss then! Good Luck!

          • The truth hurts. says:

Here we go another person who can’t state the truth. Now you leave a sarcastic quote to a young black person who ask for the truth.

I challenge and OBA higher up to make it publicly known to the rest of Bermuda, why they change the name. I don’t want to hear any negative response from PLP or OBA. Just the truth in layman terms.

            • My two cents says:

Again approaching twilight zone here. You are worried about the damn OBA name change meanwhile your ELECTED government is burning up your cash like wildfire and further destroying the economy by raising taxes because THEY have to generate more cash at the expense of the economy! You have your priorities ALL WRONG. Why aren’t you holding your elected officials accountable? That is the REAL PROBLEM and it is down right scary. YOU are SCARY!

      • Rhonda says:

“Oh My Goodness..you sound so ignorant! So as long as the PLP are “the black mens party” you will vote for them no matter how bad they mess things up for your island?”

        yes…….what’s the choice….the white men’s party….

      • hmm says:

Most of the blacks on this Island vote for the PLP, so I assume your saying most of the blacks are small minded. Thanks for helping me decided were to put my vote on either OBA or PLP.

        Thank you,
        Black male

    • Gillian Anderson says:

      Racist and ignorant post.

Help yourself – don’t expect ANYONE to help you

      • White Bermudian male says:

He/she may be racist in your eyes, but hey they spoke the truth. It is what it is. I’m one of the few whites that vote PLP. I can tell you first hand the majority of my white friends don’t approve.

I attended Berkeley Institute, I have friends on both sides of playing field. I was at a party recently and one of my mates was drunk. He spoke about me supporting the current Government. Well lets just say the rest of my night didn’t go that good. Sad but true. Only a few of my white friends that were there stated to me if you believe what your doing is good then support who you must it doesn’t change your heart. Give him a break because we all know it to be true.

        • The truth hurts. says:

Thanks for stating the truth ace boy.

        • Got to go says:

I went to Berkeley also, I’m black and there is no way I would support this government. I have had enough of their racist antics, their hatred toward foreigners and just outright poor leadership. It’s time for them to go.

  25. Terry says:

Enjoy your grazing before upon re-election the PLP raise the price of cow feed. Quo Fata…..

  26. Hmmmmm says:

This is good. Some nice, right-wing ideology is coming out in these posts. Good. However, the anti-Burch commentators have to be careful not to believe their own PR. It’s so interesting that some people in Bermuda politics are “polarizing” when they speak forcefully, take no prisoners and unashamedly put their case. I disagree with most of what Bob Richards (for example)says. I consider his views on the economy, business, and most things diametrically opposed to my own. I do not, however, consider him to be a polarizing figure nor has he ever been described as such. The question is, why not? And why is no vocal member of the Opposition described as polarizing? Could it be that they are essentially harmless, have no record of delivery, they’re not taken seriously…… Barack Obama makes a speech about a fairer tax code in the USA and all of a sudden he’s accused of “class warfare”. There’s a common element to this criticism, and at the risk of starting a game of vicious gin rummy, I’l leave that “card” in the deck for now. But it is what it is.

    • Tired of nonsense says:

Come on Hmmmmm. You’re much more intelligent than that….

Col. Burch has been downright nasty towards many that don’t think or look like him. He is a polarizing figure…and I know you know that

      > Hanging up on a caller on a talk show after asking what color she was (she said she was white)…
      > Calling another caller a house ni&&er because he disagreed with Col. Burch’s view on a particular issue…
      > Labelling Filipina guest workers as prostitutes…
      > Laughing at the fact that so many Bermudian homes are losing their value and thus creating negative equity for many locals…
      > His gruff approach to IB and foreigners in general…

As of now I have not heard one Opposition member criticize and/or verbally attack another based on their skin color, political ideology (and presenting a different view is not attacking another) etc.

And his intolerance towards such individuals is far more right wing than any post on thsi thread…

      • PEPPER says:

Nasty is not the word I would use for Burch, he is a HORRIBLE person I am still upset with his comment towards our guest workers…
I also heard his comment about house “n%$gas” and other disgusting comments that this MAN has made, but our Premier did say he “tells it like it is ” and that he has a kind heart.
I guess she will make another statement regarding Commisiong.. and what a wonderful decent person he is !!!

    • Terry says:

You gotta know when to hold em…..know when to fold em………..irony.

  27. Miss Saltus says:

Would you all with negative thoughts keep it to yourself. All Bermudians do is complain you want a politician that’s gonna get things done you want a politician that don’t bullsh!t and puts Bermudians first well you got one…and still dissatisfied. Make up your mind! Congratulations Col. Burch pleased to have you back.

  28. Tired of nonsense says:

I wrote this post back on October 2011.

I just wanted to give some a little perspective (i.e. different POV) as to why some in this island view Col. Burch as a polarizing individual. It is a role reversal, because many, myself included, seem to have a very hard time understanding why some hold different views to themselves.

If you are going to respond with the normal attacks, labels and slanderous insinuations then don’t bother. For I constantly hear that BDA needs a “conversation” in order to fully reconcile. So this view, which might not be yours, is no less valid than yours. So respect it and discuss it in a mature manner (if that is possible in this island).

And yes I agree that Col. Burch does seem to be proactive in his duties. It is unfortunate that he decides that it is necessary to express such downright hate and intolerance towards other BERMUDIANS that don’t think like him (and yes they are still Bermudian)

    ___________________________________________________________________________________

Lets do a hypothetical situation/scenario/role-reversal for a minute.

Lets substitute Lt Col Burch with a white politician, lets say Michael Dunkley.

Now lets substitute Mr. Dunkley for Col. Burch and play out a few
incidents, decisions and actions which actually have been spewed and enacted by Col. Burch. Below is the following:

 On a televised talk show Mr. Dunkley is stating his position on a certain subject. A viewer calls in to propose a different view and challenges Mr. Dunkley on his perspective. After getting irritated with the caller’s audacity to object Mr. Dunkley requests that the caller reveal his skin color. The caller seems bemused by such a question but answers it anyways and states that he is a black Bermudian. Upon hearing this response Mr. Dunkley simply hangs up on the caller as if the skin color of the caller completely nullified his views on the subject at hand.

 On another talk show Mr. Dunkley is reiterating his support for a particular stance that he unreservedly believes in being the best approach. A white viewer calls in and disagrees with Mr. Dunkley’s position and states the reasons why. Mr. Dunkley can deduce from the caller’s voice that he is white to his dismay. He is dismayed because it is of his belief that all people of the same color should automatically think and act in a monolithic fashion. So as a response to this white caller Mr. Dunkley simply states that he is nothing but a ni&&er lover (house ni&&er in the case of Col. Burch’s incident) due to the caller’s differing views and promptly cuts the caller off.

 Now say Mr. Dunkley is discussing foreign workers in Bermuda. Within one of his press conferences Mr. Dunkley states, with absolutely no qualms, that he has heard that all Caribbean guest workers are nothing but drug dealers (Filipinas as prostitutes in Col Burch’s incident). As a result of this blatant nonsensical remark some of his brain dead followers start harassing Caribbean workers and spraying graffiti around the island encouraging locals to attack them and for them ultimately to leave Bermuda.

 What if Mr. Dunkley in his role stated that it made him smile and get all warm and gooey inside because of all the for sale signs he sees around Bermuda and the falling prices. Despite Mr. Dunkley’s happiness the people that are being forced to sell their home due to the state of the economy and the others who even if they sell their home will be in the hole because the falling prices have resulted in negative equity for these mortgage holders.

 Mr. Dunkley now in all his wisdom decides that foreigners are the main part of our problem and thus any born and bred Bermudian that falls in love with a foreigner must pay the price for doing so via a licensing requirement similar to SPCA dog an d cat licensing.

Now I ask Bernews posters, and in particular to Col. Burch supporters, suppose Mr. Dunkley has acquired a reputation as a government minister that “gets things done” and that he is the most effective politician in power.

Given that fact I ask black Bermudians, who support Col. Burch and recommend him for Premier, would you also be so supportive of Mr. Dunkley if he carried on and stated the above? Would you want him to represent you and Bermuda?

If you answer no and the reason is because his views and actions can easily be seen as being racist and hateful then you are absolutely correct and no right minded person could fault you for taking such a view. You are right he would be considered a racist, white supremacist, ignorant et al. But why is it when Col Burch, or any other PLP representative, talk in the manner as above they are simply labeled as “straight talkers” who are just setting the “record straight?”

My next question is why does Col . Burch, and others who retain that such divisive thought processes, receive such support from you guys to the point of you wanting him for Premier? Why wouldn’t Mr. Dunkley receive the same support despite the fact that he is known as the man that “gets things done in politics”?

In closing anyone that believes that Col. Burch, and others who think like him, should be granted political power you lose the right to claim and throw around racist accusation at any one person and/or organization. Next time you are about to do so, stop and reflect on your own inner feelings and who you support and take note that by throwing around such accusations you are nothing but a hypocrite.

Thanks for reading and am hoping for a intellectual response.

PS: If the extent of your response is, “oh please” or some sort of OBA label or my favorite the racist label then save your breath and energy typing it.

    • The truth hurts. says:

I fell a sleep after the first paragraph.

      • Tired of nonsense says:

That’s because you are a racist:)

      • Concerned says:

And thats why your country is almost “THIRD WORLD” because you will not LISTEN or read to the truth!! You are uneducated and misinformed! Continue to vote for “the mans” party and you will be fishing for your dinner in about 10 years!

        • Rhonda says:

Concerned why are you concerned about our Third World country….we are happy you appear very bitter…need couch….

      • Mike Auxard says:

Thats because you are a PLP supporter

      • Triangle Drifter says:

        It does hurt doesn’t it?

      • star man says:

        Nice. There’s your problem.

    • Lady Scribbler says:

      Dear Tired,

That was well put and makes sense. I have never understood why it is so openly ok for one race to call names and in another it is so completely incorrect and disturbing that we shun anyone who speaks that way. I have friends from all sides and walks of life. I was stunned when one of them said “pay back is a XXXXX” when I complained about the way someone spoke to my child (called her a spoiled white XXXXX). I would love to see some real healing and genuine strides made towards racial reconciliation but until we find a way to help our friends of color …..dare I say, move on?

    • Wow says:

You must be smoking Dunkleys cows manure. Has Dunkley ever been around Court Street to talk to we guys NO. Maybe to the police station but that doesn’t count. I have nothing against the Milk Man, but he doesn’t understand how I think or know my struggles. He’s the only one in Bermuda that sells milk and eggs so you due the figures. The man don’t give a rats a$$ about we guys. All he wants is to kick the PLP out like they did him in 1998. It will not happen this year, so give it up. In the end blacks will not support a white party and whites will not support a black party. Get over it.

Didn’t you have a bunch of blacks that left the UBP/OBA something smells dirty and it’s not my top lip.

      • Tired of nonsense says:

        Thanks for your response.

I wasn’t sticking up for or promoting Mr. Dunkley. It was a hypothetical situation and Mr. Dunkley was chosen to be the white politician as he is the probably the highest profile of any white politician within Bermuda. While I might smoke, it is definitely no mans manure. However, I have smoked some sh!t before!

It is a shame that some feel as though we can never get along. But it is what it is at this point in time. Also, to clarify I am no member of any political organization. I am just so tired of the blatant double standards that are promoted by some on this piece of rock. Racism and hatred have no place in bermuda nowadays no matter what camp especiallybfrom individuals that are elected/chosen to lead our island.

I won’t be disappointed when the PLP get reelected as I have never thought, as evidenced by my previous posts, they would lose in the first place. I just hope that Prem. Cox is truly interested in “resetting the dial” on the poor state of local politics.

    • Sparky says:

You can bet the farm that if your role-reversal scenario were to take place, the unrest in Bermuda would be magnified ten-fold. Thank you for writing a sensible, articulate and thought-provoking piece. It’s a pity that “Truth Hurts” can’t muster up the energy or interest to actually finish reading your opinion and in the process perhaps learn something to counter his/her narrow view. Col. Burch is a xenophobic, ego-bound, racist loose cannon. The people who claim he works hard are right…he works very hard indeed at antagonizing the very people who are necessary to keep the wheels of business turning; he works very hard at alienating anyone and everyone who does buy into his hateful public utterings. He’s the worst kind of politician there is and, if elected, will continue to drag the country down the very slippery slops it’s currently on.

  29. Terry says:

    Tired of Nonsense….get real.

    More spin, propaganda.

Imgaine someone like you talking this way without a name. Who are you besides a voice of the PLP. You call names like Dunkley and Burch and others.

    How much they paying you.

    Just call the freekin election.

    • Pastor Syl says:

@ Terry: you just completely lost me! Did you even read what Tired of Nonsense wrote? I have to agree with him (and others) that if the positions were reversed and a white person said/did even half the stuff Col. Burch has done, this island would be in flames.

  30. Itsaboutallofus says:

Wonder when the OBA is going to announce another candidate…it’s been a long long time.

  31. Bermudian says:

is there a way of paying $160,000 to get permanent residency or PRC, or a Green Card to go and live in the USA as BDA is finished if this Gentleman gets to make decisions again

  32. Cancer says:

Well liked????? ! Got to be kiddin me. Burch is the worse thing to hit politics along with ewart brown. Have you noticed all the rules and laws burch was responsible for are now being reversed. He ruined this island and he’s part of the reason why this country is in such a mess! I guess he’s one of the only PLP people that gets some things done. Burch if your gonna represent Bermuda get rid of those earrings and learn how to speak rationally and compassionately!! Anyway hes unelectable! So OBA all the way!!! CC premier in waiting!!

  33. sandgrownan says:

The biggest myth in Bermuda politics is that the guy gets things done. He’s a nasty piece of work. Nothing more or less. What’s his plan to pay down the debt that is crippling Bermudians?

Cog, in choosing to have an individual with his mentality in government demonstrates that the PLP have learned nothing. It’s the same old party and it will be the same old rhetoric.

Meet the new Cog, same as the old Cog.

  34. Michael H. Dunkley says:

@ Wow says…sorry to disappoint you but obviously you do not get around as I do or you would have seen me. Sorry to disappoint you again but I serve because I care. Sit back and reflect without bias…do you really think I need to be in politics for anything other than to try and make a difference ? I have enough on my plate and a family that I truly love. For me it is all about a better Bermuda for all of us ! I also enjoy working with people to improve their lives. So look out for me Wow says as I look forward to having a chat to see how we can work together to make a positive difference!

    • Cleancut says:

Mr. Dunkley, how do you feel about Burch returning to the political arena? who is running for the OBA in this constituency, this is of vital importance, He must be stopped before more damage is done to this Country. Burch will be representing this country overseas again, and i am sure you know what he gets up to when he does.

    • Wow says:

      Thanks Mr. Dunkley,

While your @ it please answer this post that someone posted. I await your response! Oh and I love your milk and eggs in the morning.

      “The truth hurts. says:
      January 12, 2012 at 5:43 pm

Here we go another person who can’t state the truth. Now you leave a sarcastic quote to a young black person who ask for the truth.

I challenge and OBA higher up to make it publicly known to the rest of Bermuda, why they change the name. I don’t want to hear any negative response from PLP or OBA. Just the truth in layman terms.”

    • Hope this helps says:

The pot calling the kettle black. Be a little bit more professional and stop wasting time. “I have enough on my plate and a family that I truly love” Translation = I got more money then you boy!

Like they wrote the only time you been around de block is to the Popo station.

  35. Cleancut says:

After the appointment of Col.Burch, the People of this COUNTRY have just learned that Paula Cox is truly just a “COG”

  36. Herbalist says:

One thing on here you know who’s white and black.

  37. Michael H. Dunkley says:

@ Cleancut…R Wayne Scott is running in 27 and he has been on the doorstep. Wayne is an excellent candidate who truly wants to put Bermuda first…all of Bermuda. To answer your question about how I feel about Mr. Burch returning to the political arena…IMO he never left as I note he was Chair of the Parole Board, and many in the community have not been happy with some of their decisions recently. Imguess he and the Premier have “kissed and made up” after their tiff. I might also add that anyone is free to put their name forward for political office and I will always support that, now it is up to the voters to do their thing behind the curtain. I trust we all agree that we need people elected that truly want to work for all people without bias; no matter race, color or creed. In this regard a voter should closely exam a candidates past record as now more than ever we need people with a proven track record of success in life.
@ Wow says…thank you for your support and I am glad that you eat a healthy breakfast. In answer to your question about the OBA I think you are aware that the One Bermuda Alliance was formed as a new party last year so I am not sure what you refer to as a name change.

    • Wow says:

You talk a good game but then you are a strong candidate. If you ever join the PLP I will support you. Right now the whole World economy is screwed up so you can’t really do anything about that, because what ever effects the USA effects Bermuda. The only thing that I want from your party if you win the next election is to fix the crime or put a dent in it. When these men go West Gate it’s a club house or community prison. Their is no deterrent in place. Prison should be a place where people don’t want to return. I’m talking about 23 hour lock down in your cell and 1 hour for rec. Slide their food under the door like the majority of the prisons in the World. When their family’s visit them put them behind a plaxi glass with a telephone. Right now their all sitting around tables on meet and greet like a school. That would save Government all this money hiring so many prison officers. I have had friends that went West for various criminal acts. Each one told me the place is like a mens hotel compared to the prisons over in the USA. Work on this and I might change my vote because my party the PLP has been sleeping on this for to long. I’m tired of all this BS crime. FIX IT DUNKLEY OBA/UBP because @ this point I don’t care as long as your protecting my family!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Thanks for responding,

    • True Bermudian says:

Michael: How come it’s called “Chocolate Drink”? Is there no milk product in it?

      • Duh!! says:

Its called chocolate drink because there’s no such thing as chocolate milk. Not until the cows can produce it.

    • look at me now says:

“Sorry to disappoint you again but I serve because I care. Sit back and reflect without bias…do you really think I need to be in politics for anything other than to try and make a difference?”

B.S. Michael Dunkley! You want to be in politics because it feeds your narcissistic supply ie power(and money).

“I also enjoy working with people to improve their lives.”

Oh really? So why do you have a problem with your employees joining the(a) union? How about start with improving their lives first.

      • Tired of nonsense says:

Pretty sure hiring people and providing them with an income is one part that improves people’s lives…and how exactly would Unionization improve their lot in life? Are you insinuating that Dunkley’s is somehow abusing their employees and that the Union is the only way to save them from the big bad white owners? Do you have a problem that Island Construction employees are not unionized?

And so in this cult of personality which has been cultivated within Bermuda, any person that is not part of the PLP, but politically active, is simply doing it on a selfish basis and simply years for power…

But if an individual is politically active and is part of the PLP they are sent from god and is acting solely in the best interests of the island and her people (while also collecting a six figure pay check)…

        Interesting that…

        • look at me now says:

Not if you aren’t paying them what they are deserved while you sit on millions. Now how about you shut up and let Dunkley reply because unlike you he would know what I’m talking about. Or how about you stop ASSuming what I’m saying. I don’t know anything about Island Construction or how it’s run so why would I comment on their situation? Unlike YOU I only speak about what I KNOW!

Now if you’d be quiet and stop ASSuming things I’d like to see what the person I was ADDRESSING THE COMMENT TO has to say

          Interesting that….

          • look at me now says:

And where did I mention race or anything about him being a “big bad white owner”? Interesting that you would put that in there…says more about you than me.

            • Tired of nonsense says:

“says more about you than me.”

Not necessarily, given the fact that 99% of arguments against individuals such as Dunkley are automatically linked to some White racial connotation, insinuation or stereotype.

I am simply a product of this hate filled, intolerant and ignorant environment we all call home…

              • look at me now says:

No, not really. Sounds personal to me. You should work on those issues you have.

  38. True Bermudian says:

Well… there goes (what’s left) of the neighbourhood.

  39. Shut Up Paula says:

Plp r such a racist party. Im black but im voting “white”

    • Hudson says:

I think that is great – but don’t degrade yourself and fall into the PLP trap. YOu are black and you are voting RIGHT. It’s not a black white thing. The PLP are (successfully I might add) making it a black white thing. It’s about politics, economics and our future. It’s about making this Island work for teh betterment of ALL of us. There is no WHITE party. There is no Black party (Zane, Jane and other come to mind?) There is right and there is wrong. What has happened during teh last 5 years is just plan wrong. Vote out the government – let them regroup and see what some different faces can do in the meantime. Taht’s all you can do as a voter.

  40. Shut Up Paula says:

What does anyone on PLP have to offer our society outside of their positions in the party? At least Michael dunkley provides us with eggs and milk and employment…. smh ! PLP is all about Take Take Take. They gettin their money n u aint gon see NONE of it.

  41. Concerned says:

This is what I meant by “small minded”…US black folks will continue to vote for a party just because they are the “black peoples party”?? How about you vote for the party that is going to turn the country around no matter their race! Goodness Gracious!

  42. Truth Spoken says:

Well done Col Burch as for those that have nothing but hateful things to say……GET A LIFE!

    • Tired of nonsense says:

So you have a problem with what you perceive as being “hateful” posts, but yet you seem to have no problem supporting man that has actually demonstrated hate filled personality traits (i.e. read my posts on ACTUAL events and not perceived hate)…

Maybe you are one of the blatant hypocrites to whom I was referring to then…

    • star man says:

      Get a brain.

  43. VJ says:

Welcome back into the arena Col. Burch!!! You would definitely get my vote if I lived in your constituency!!! Col. Burch is de man!!!

    • Tired of nonsense says:

He is a racist and intolerant man supported by the same type of people….

  44. Jim Bean says:

Oh look – specialgirl4you is back! Hi PLP PAID blogger
Another one is “time to take off your hoods OBA” – at least I hope so – if not this country is sick – the ubp is still the ubp -ask kim swan – the supporters of that party are the white racists. As for LT col. Burch = he is not FULL col. – he is also a nasty person. He does get things done that have been seen to FAIL!! Only in bermuda do we let failures run government. Burch is unemployable. He is a plp stooge. Ask plp how many stooges are paid by the taxpayer. Renee webb, walton brown, rolfe – the list goes on. Oh and I think dunkley already is wealthy – he does not need government to be wealthy – unlike plp stooges who use government as their personal finances playground

    • Cleancut says:

Col, Lt.Col, General, it doesn’t make any difference, its TA handouts. Burch would not even make a second lieutenant in the British army. he is totally useless as a soldier. Here in Bermuda, the rank is of your choice.

      • Cleancut says:

The only Person in the history of the Bermuda regiment that could have achieved the rank of a Lieutenant Colonel, British army, had he been given the chance, would have been.Larry Burchall.

    • star man says:

“Oh and I think dunkley already is wealthy – he does not need government to be wealthy – unlike plp stooges who use government as their personal finances playground…” because they can’t make it in the Private Sector! Gonna be interesting to watch the PLP haters scramble for jobs when they are VOTED OUT!!

  45. VJ says:

On another note, I lived off of Court Street for many years and owned a small business there. I have NEVER seen Michael Dunkley in the area…Never!!! Mr. Dunkley is no doubt a very nice man and yes he employs many Bermudians. However, like somebody said earlier, he will never, ever comprehend the struggles many of us go through on a daily basis. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and he (along with his brother) have money and property up the ying yang. Does he identify with the average black brother on the street? Noooo! Say what you like, call me any racist name in the book…which doesn’t bother me in the least…but I’m going with my grassroots party and people that look like me….so there!!! PLP all the way!!! All the way PLP!!!!

    • Concerned says:

So you would rather Stick with your grassroots party just because rather than voting for a party that will get your island back! WOW! SCARY! I will vote for the party that can possitively turn things around! Im shocked that people actually think like you! Dont care how bad they screw up you will vote for them NO MATTER WHAT! That’s like being in a relationship with an abuser and saying “I dont care that they beat me everyday..I will support them NO MATTER WHAT!! WOW BERMUDA!

  46. VJ says:

@ Shut up Paula…is Michael Dunkley the ONLY politician that provides employment to Bermudians? You need to do your homework darling. There are quite a few PLP parliamentarians that currently or have previously employed many, many Bermudians. One of my daughter’s first jobs was for a former PLP Minister… who treated her quite well I might add.

  47. RealityBites says:

Why wasn’t the young boy holding the PLP poster in school where he was supposed to be?

  48. specialgirl4you says:

IT looks like Col. Burch is a “strong force” to be up against. The OBA/UBP fans are upset, crying and screaming that your back. Many did not expect your return. They did not want to deal with you. You a tough politician who takes “no bull” or “prisoners”. Just the mere fact Mr. Dunkley wrote on the blog suggest he is up against a tough debate with you. You always held Mr Dunkley to the wicket in the Senate. He was not able to throw out anything when debating with you. Wayne Scott will never win against the Col Burch. Also he so far far out of touch with his own people and is not capable of making that contact with the people. Col. Burch these comments suggest that you are back in full action, and what a “Strong wave” you have made. Love him or hate him, the COl is back…..back….look out OBA/UBP. Keep pushing on Col. Burch and working in the best interest of “BERMUDIANS”.

A name change does not mean the OBA/UBP does not have a history.

    • Cleancut says:

Stop calling him Colonel. He is not a Colonel. Gaddafi also, was not a Colonal.

  49. VJ says:

@ Concerned…just what makes you think that, as you put it, the OBA or any other party can “get your island back”? I would agree that everything is not perfect here, but no country is! How do you know that somebody else in power won’t make things WORSE? People like you are just chomping at the bit praying that the PLP fail so you can say “I told you so” instead of trying to hold up and support our leaders. The PLP is currently in power, and by hoping they fail is hoping for a miserable Bermuda for all of us. Instead of being part of the problem, how about being part of the solution. I’m human and I even have to check myself from time to time for moaning and complaining…but guess what, I also attend town hall meetings, call my MP, etc and make sure my voice is heard in the proper way!!!

    • Cleancut says:

I agree VG, but you have to see that the PLP since being in office have recruited Bermudians in their ranks that have been disastrous to this country. Burch, Brown, Cox, its not about town hall meetings anymore, its about voting for the party that has the honest people that will represent us internally and internationally. Remember the world is watching us and reading us right now, vote for the OBA, and if things are not running right after 4 years then we can change them. Hopefully after 4 years the BURCH’S THE BROWN’S AND THE COX’S WILL NOT BE AROUND.

      • VJ says:

See, you people make it out to be all about the Brown, Burch and Cox when it goes beyond that! You say vote OBA and if things don’t work out, then in four years vote them out….this makes sense to you? You have got to me kidding me, do you know what can happen in four year? You say that the PLP have recruited people in their ranks that have been disastrous…in what way exactly? The most people can do is take potshots at previous leader’s personalities, but what have they done to make things a disaster? Take Dr. Brown for example. He was called haughty, arrogant, egotistical, etc but nobody could find any of his policies at fault, they just didn’t like the man. Dr. Brown was my physician years before he became Premier, and how I saw him then was the same as I saw him in office…and I might add a lot of doctors have similar personas but I never hear them called such names. Col. Burch is another case in point. With his regimental background, yes he’s going to be a bit rough around the edges…but who cares, he gets the job done!!! And as for Premier Cox, there are very few people on the face of this earth with a mind as briliiant…and classy and well spoken round out the package. So there you have it…I had yet to see anyone in the OBA that even come close!!!

        • Cleancut says:

Smuggling into the country 4 men from Guantanamo Bay = “a bit rough around the edges”?

Calling a member of the public a “house N%$ger” = “a bit rough around the edges”?

attacking the Auditor General and the Governor = “a bit rough around the edges”?

SHREDDING UP mail and sending it in the post to a member of this community = “a bit rough around the edges”?

Insulting a segment of Bermuda’s community.= “a bit rough around the edges”"

Taking a seat, after loosing the primary in his constituency. “a bit rough around the edges”?

Telling the general public “we don’t care what you think” ” a bit rough around the edges”?

And the list goes on and on and on.

          sure VJ “who cares”

          • Cleancut says:

You are correct VJ, you will not see anyone in the OBA come close. Unfortunately people like you don’t know the meaning of the word integrity.

  50. Razor says:

What a parade of clowns in that picture. Gets things done my ass.
