PLP Confirm David Burt As Candidate

January 18, 2012

[Updated with video] This afternoon [Jan.18] the Progressive Labour Party confirmed that Senator David Burt will represent them in Constituency #18 Pembroke West Central.

Pembroke West Central is presently held by the PLP’s Neletha Butterfield, who won in 2007 with 69.62% of the vote against the United Bermuda Party’s Mariyln Steede [25.15%] and Independent Roger Russell [5.22%].

Senator David Burt defeated the incumbent Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister Neletha Butterfield in the PLP primary contest for Constituency #18 Pembroke West Central.

The first candidate selection meeting for Pembroke West Central ended in controversy on September 22nd. It initially appeared Minister Butterfield had won, however, hours later the PLP released a statement saying, “At this time, there is no certified result that can be released by the Party.” A subsequent meeting resulted in Senator Burt being selected as the candidate.

The youngest member serving in the Lower or Upper House, the 32-year-old Senator was sworn in at Government House in Nov 2011, becoming the Junior Minister for Finance, Environment, Planning and Infrastructure.

After attending Florida Air Academy, he studied at George Washington University in Washington D.C, obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration, Double Major in Finance and Information Systems in 2001.

He went on to complete a Master of Science in Information Systems, Concentration in Information Systems Development, which he obtained in 2003. Prior to becoming a Senator, Mr Burt served as Chairman of the Progressive Labour Party.

Update 3.45pm: Sen. Burt’s full statement follows below:

Good Afternoon, Madam Premier, Chairman Dill, Secretary General Smith, Voters of Pembroke West Central, Members of the Party, my Family, my fiancée and my Friends, Thank you for coming today.

It is an honour to be here this afternoon, to be announced as the PLP Candidate for Pembroke West Central Constituency # 18.

I would like to first of all thank the Members of Pembroke West Central for putting their faith in me. I will work hard to repay your faith and will be a true representative, not just for the ideals of the PLP, but for the betterment of Bermuda.

I have lived in Pembroke all of my life, and care deeply about our community. I look forward to meeting more of the residents in Pembroke West Central as we continue to canvass the hills of Constituency 18 to listen, learn, and to do our best to assist.

In my brief time in public service I have learned that the best ideas often come from the people we serve, and we must be present to listen to the concerns of our constituents. As the MP for this area, I will make time to canvass, time for meetings, time for your phone calls and I will respond to your emails, because that is the service and respect that you deserve.

In the PLP we do not believe there is such a thing as a safe seat, and our team will work to earn the trust of each voter and hopefully their support. We may not always agree, but no matter where you stand politically, I will represent your interests and be a constant presence in the constituency.

As Bermudians, we all want the same thing: a Bermuda where our children have the opportunity to grow and progress to fulfil their potential; a Bermuda where our cousins on the west side of the island do not fear going east and get to experience all of what our country offers; a Bermuda where we can raise our children in peace and harmony; a unified community which approaches issues and treats all of our people fairly to ensure all of our people can get ahead.

This is the Bermuda the voters of Pembroke West Central want, this is Bermuda I want, this is Bermuda we all want, and this is the Bermuda that we will work hard to ensure that we have.

This election will represent a choice for the voters of this constituency and this country, a choice not only between parties, but also a choice between two competing visions of the future of our island home. Voters will choose between:

A party that has led Bermuda through 13 years of progress for all of our people, or a party short on experience, and long on recycled ideas from a past era.

A party that draws on 49 years of experience in fighting for the people of this country and bringing progress to all of our citizens, or a repackaged party unsure of its direction and its purpose.

The choice facing our voters is clear, and when the report card of 13 years is reviewed, We are confident that the people of this country will again chose the Progressive Labour Party, a grassroots party made up of over 2000 humble, hard working men and women, to form the next government.

They will choose the PLP, because we are the only party with a leader experienced in local business, international business, and who understands the global economy of which Bermuda is a part. A leader who is determined to make sure that Bermudians are always kept in the picture and play their rightful role in the development of our Island home.

They will choose the PLP because this is the only party that has the interest people at heart. The Progressive Labour Party is deeply invested in making sure that ALL of Bermuda succeeds, whether it be Front Street, or right outside on Angle Street.

The people of Bermuda know that we are living through hard times. This is a period of great challenge for Bermuda as the great recession continues to cause havoc both here and abroad.

As a relatively young man, I view the challenges of our country through the lens of my generation. As a country and as a people, we need to continue to empower ourselves to take advantage of the opportunities of tomorrow, that is what this Party has always stood for and that is what we must continue to do.

My job as a member of this great team will be to speak up for my generation and examine issues with a progressive view towards a great future for Bermuda. I am proud that the PLP, throughout their history, has taken the progressive stance and have been the engineers of many of the rights that our people currently enjoy.

We are all pleased that the Party has made it clear in the last Throne Speech that we will not shy away from taking bold steps to move our country into the future.

I am proud to be a member of the Progressive Labour Party team, proud to be here today to follow in the footsteps of giants in our country’s history, and proud to be given the chance to continue the work of bringing progress to a nation, and hope to our people.

I will work hard to earn the support of the voters in Pembroke West Central and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving Bermuda.

Thank you

It’s great to see that the PLP recognizes the talent within their ranks. Congrats David, wishing you all the best in Constituency 18 and beyond!

  3. sigh says:

    The Dream Team continues…

Now where is the OBA candidate for C18?

    • School says:

The OBA candidate is studying the UBP book like Craig (OBA Leader is doing).

      • Jo Public says:

Whew, that goodness…I would much rather see that, then have him studying the PLP financial guidebook!

  4. I know who my canidate is says:

A breath of fresh air, this is real change.

  5. Sarah says:

    Congrats David!!

  6. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

    The definition of ‘Platinum’.

Punish anyone who disagrees with you
Lavishly spend on hotels and overseas travel
Absolutely refuse to answer plantation questions
    Take all you can get
Increase personal wealth at the country’s expense
Never tell them your real; plan
Uighurs – take in four, piss off the UK
Make friends and family the recipients of lucrative Govt contracts

  7. Jonathan Smith says:

Having worked closely with David over the past two years, I know that Senator David Burt is a first-class candidate who brings intellect, integrity, talent and real energy to the process. And his attributes don’t stop there. While the voters of C18 will have the final say of course, Bermuda will be the real winner with David Burt MP in the House of Assembly for sure!

  8. Cancer says:

Is this the same guy that read out a made up statement that was supposed have been put out by the premeir? I wonder who he was the understudy too?

Still can’t see how a newcomer can replace a sitting MP ! Oh it’s the PLP I forgot!

Ps altho I have critisized Mr Burt I think he’s a bright guy and he may have a lot to offer! (I critisize when I shud and play fair when warranted!)

  9. Cancer says:

BTW the OBA will be rolling out bright new candidates next week which will take over as the next Government of Bermuda… Lets get this over with.

    • sigh says:

Oh gosh – this should be interesting!

    • kevin says:

It must be noted that the best candidates that the OBA have rolled out todate are the former UBB ones hands down!!

      • Death to party politics says:

        Who’s the UBB?

      • Jo Public says:

And how many from the UBP have been courted by the PLP now?????? Dont they have the former leaderZ??? So were those former UBP candidates wrong about the PLP or were the PLP wrong about hose involved in the UBP? Who is more UBP…the OBA or the PLP? Does it matter more to us, who someone was, or who they are now and what they can offer!?

I think this country and all countries would be better off if we ALL just stop voting for someone based on party affiliation. How many great candidated have been denied a place in government because of who they represented instead of what the stood for. How many idiots past and present have had a voice and a paycheck on us simply because of the party they represented.

Imagine if we actually voted for the best candidates, and imagine if no seat was a “safe seat”. I beg you all – STOP voting PLP, UBP, OBA. Take a look at all of the constituants in your area. Ask yourself , why are they in politics and are they involved for the right reasons. Ask yourself, are they qualified to represent you and Bermuda! Ask yourself , do I want this person representing and speaking on behalf of the people of Bermuda.

If we all stopped with the “politics” of politics and had a government of responsible, educated, qualified, honest individuals of different races, different backgrounds, imagine what we could accomplish.

        • LOL (original) says:

In Bermuda politics this trumps all other qualities accourding to many posters.

“Ask yourself , do I want this person representing and speaking on behalf of the people of Bermuda.”

          LOL

  10. Cancer says:

To kevin – it shud be noted the hardest working PLP minister is the ex UBP opposition leader…. Wayne Furbert ! So don’t even go there.

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

Cancer, your comment is far from the truth. All PLP ministers work hard.

      • sigh says:

        Ms Furbert,
Don’t even worry about the OBA blog team of haters. To ‘Cancer’ and some people, you know we can do nothing right. Let them be.

        • Death to party politics says:

Indeed, the PLP has an outstanding record of fiscal management, accountability, and transparency.

      • 32n64w says:

Cancer, your comment is far from the truth. All PLP ministers work hard … on ensuring their photos appear in as many media outlets as possible.

      • Watcher says:

LaVerne, please speak the truth, some of our ministers have been absentee representatives for some time. With what is facing the St. Monicas, Friswells and Middle Town areas, Michael Weekes has been a shining light since his election, turning out at all of the events, working with the neighbourhood watch groups and the Police Community Officers and offering his assistance where ever he can. In the 2 years since this foolishness started I have yet to see Walter Roban who covers the back of St. Monicas or more importantly Ashfield DeVent at a single one of these events.

        • LOL (original) says:

I agree with Watcher M. Weeks is a sold person and good candidate.

          LOL

      • Go away says:

So why did he beat you 7 – 80 or whatever it was. I mean dam your own people don’t support your race talk. It is what it is. Your washed up.(smile)

First the Mrs. Cox’s fires you.

Second the X UBP leader hands you a beating.

Or was it the other way around Mrs. Furbert?

    • specialgirl4you says:

Maybe one should carefully examine the reasons many blacks MPs crossed the floor to come home to the PLP? The reasons do not bode well for the UBP/OBA. It almost puts them to shame. It was “white supremacy, elitism, and racism.” Black MPs were not respected for their intellectual talents. The OBA, is still doing what the UBP did and this will also reveal sooner, rather than later.

      • Gillian says:

or maybe it was just because they missed the POWER??

  11. Makai Dickerson says:

Congrats Senator Burt. I know you will be a great benefit to the People of Bermuda. Your hard work will prove to put Bermuda first.

  12. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

Jonathan Smith says: “I know that Senator David Burt is a first-class candidate who brings intellect, integrity, talent and real energy to the process”.

    Something new for PLP.

  13. Cancer says:

all PLP ministers work hard? That must be a joke! Maybe I would have agreed if there wasn’t so much perceived corruption. Like they say where there’s smoke there fire!

  14. SDLP says:

Jonathan Smith – you are not exactly the authority on intellect, integrity, talent and real energy. Are you not the same guy who consistantly makes yourself look foolish in the media.

    • sigh says:

SMH – such a personal attack…Senator Smith you must be doing something right!

      • Tired of nonsense says:

Guessing the same can be said about Cannonier in light of the continuing attackes that seem to come his way every time he opens his mouth…

Actually it seems all of the island’s politicians must be doing something right as they are all attacked from one side or the other when they speak…

Unfortunately most of them are not doing something right as evidenced by our current state of local politics…

In the end if you’re going to condemn such attacks make sure it goes both ways…

Tired of nonsense and fed up with double standards and hypocrisy…

  15. Honestly says:

Same negativity…BERNEWS HOW ABOUT JUST DELETING THEM AS THIS WILL BRING ABOUT KINDER SPIRITS NO MATTER WHICH POLITICAL PARTY THEY REPRESENT.

As someone mentioned, the OBA IS THE OLD UBP. NOTHING GAINED, NOTHING LOST! SHOULD’VE CONTINUED WITH THREE PARTIES TO BRING ABOUT INCREASED VOTES AND CHOICE!

    • LOL (original) says:

It would not have as it would have only split the opposition vote give more control to the Governing party. Less opposition means to me less debate on poorly legislation and borders dictatorship (ie small group of people forcing laws on the majority). Politics in this country have ripped this country apart and will continue to do so till there is nothing left of our once proud country.

LOL we are not an objective group of people and all we do is bicker over advantage which only the rich really take advantage of.

  16. Itsaboutallofus says:

    Great choice! Good luck David!

  17. Wow says:

Mr Burt is so handsome wow I will definitely vote for him

    • Death to Party Politics says:

      Based on his looks?

    • Really? says:

Wow, I hope that you’ll also consider Mr Burt’s positions on the issues of the day. I trust you’ll still vote for him, but give the man some points for substance!

  18. Never , ever says:

And people think Bob the snob is arrogant and condescending … This guy sets new standards for it . Plus he’s avasive as who knows what when having to answer anything at all . But if you think he’s cute ( and I know you’re being funny ) well , to each his own !

  19. CCJKMOT says:

    Lead well Brother Senator!

  20. specialgirl4you says:

Congratulations !Congratulations ! to an excellent young man that has step forward to provide service to his country and all Bermudians. Sen. Burt you will do wellin the government. Continue to work in the best interest of Bermuda. It is so refreshing to see a young man come forward and work hard. You are brilliant candidate for the PLP, and wonderfully blessed. The PLP continues to select such great talent, and strong people to push Bermuda forward.

    Keep pushing on Sen. Burt.

  21. Jo Public says:

THats what you took from this article???? That is your input? Really!

  22. Really? says:

I am still floored that people in Bermuda refuse to deal with substance and instead engage in petty criticisms! We really need to elevate the level of the conversation to deal with the real issues at hand.

You’re either part of the solution or part of the problem and comments about Sen. Burt’s appearance is not creating jobs or stop the violence. Cheers to you David, for trying to be a part of the solution.

  23. LOL (original) says:

AS far as Burt goes I do not know him personally. I see a politician that in my opinion has used knowledge gained from position to enhance himself economically. For me he would have to win at the doorstep of the voter with a portfolio of community donations of time and money where the effects of said thing had real impact on the community. He may have this I don’t know. Oh and being the ex chairman of the PLP means nothing to me but a well thought out personal career plan. M. Weeks would at this moment would win hands down at the poll and Mr. Burt could be the consultant (Bermudian too) to the ruling party whom ever that ends up being. Just my opinion take it or leave it.

    LOL (voter)

  24. Gillian says:

I’m not sure who I will vote for yet, but seems to me like Senator Burt is a fine upstanding young man and I wish him very well.
