Golf: Lionel Pengelly Memorial Trophy
Senior Golfers competing in the 3rd Annual Bacardi Par 3 Tournament at The Fairmont Southampton will have the opportunity to place a new piece of silverware on their mantle.
Fairmont Southampton’s Director of Golf Anthony Mocklow announced the creation of the Lionel Pengelly Memorial Trophy as the prize that an anticipated 50 senior golfers will be competing for in the prestigious golf classic held next month.
“Lionel Pengelly was a legend in the Bermuda sporting community, a man who exemplified the values of hard work, cooperation and good sportsmanship,” said Anthony Mocklow, Director of Golf at The Fairmont Southampton.
“As the Bacardi Par 3 enters its third year, we are pleased to have the opportunity to pay tribute to a man who contributed much to sport on our island and look forward to an exciting weekend of golf here in Bermuda.”
Lionel Malcolm Pengelly was born on July 3rd 1929 in Bermuda. His early career days were spent in a number of pursuits in Dockyard emanating out of his work as a shipwright apprentice before joining Masters Ltd in the early 1950’s as a Sports Department salesman.
Mr. Pengelly was an avid and accomplished local and international sportsman. In his early years he played football for several local clubs including National Sports Club, culminating in his captaining a National team in 1953. Later he would take his talents to the hockey field representing Bermuda at the 1967 Pan American Games and continuing to play competitive hockey into the mid 1980’s.
Upon his retirement from Masters Ltd, he became reacquainted with golf, resulting in numerous trophies and prizes with both the Riddell’s Bay Seniors and at The Fairmont Southampton. Mr. Pengelly passed away on December 4, 2011.
Rees Fletcher, son-in-law to Mr. Pengelly said, “We are honored that senior golfers will have the opportunity to compete for this inaugural memorial trophy. Lionel, at his best was a competitor and his enthusiasm for sports was the hallmark of his life. To celebrate Lionel Pengelly with the Bacardi Par 3 Tournament at The Fairmont Southampton, where he competed regularly, will be very special”
The Bacardi Par 3 Tournament is a two-day 36-hole championship golf tournament will be played at The Fairmont Southampton on March 23-25, 2012. The tournament will this year benefit the Red Cross and The New Beginnings Education Trust. The Tournament is sanctioned by the Bermuda Golf Association (BGA) and the Professional Golfers’ Association of Bermuda (BPGA).
Tournament entry forms can be picked up from the Resort Golf Shop at The Fairmont Southampton or downloaded here. The entry fees are $250 for professionals and $175 for amateurs and include a practice round of golf, tournament fees, continental breakfast on Tournament days, cocktail reception and prize presentation.
